Midwest to Southwest Road Trip
On the second and third leg of our cross-country trek, we passed from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, west through all of Nebraska, then a bit southwest to southeast Denver, Colorado. That Iowa – Colorado trip took us about fifteen hours and was, by far, the most exhausting and excruciatingly boring portion of the trip, mostly done in the dark. In the pitch black of the plains, and on the straight line of an almost flat freeway, you get deliriously close to hallucinating from the utter boredom. Is that possible? Well, drive through Iowa and Nebraska in the dark. You’ll know exactly what I mean. By the time you hit the bovine urinal stench of all of eastern Colorado, you’ll be dizzy and seeing things.
Third leg on Monday morning (by this point all the days have run together), we wandered across the street from our hotel, which fortuitously happened to be a Whole Foods Market, and got rabbit friendly (read: vegan and vegetarian) lunch and spread out on the tables there, basking in the 55F / 12.7C sunny weather. Then from southern Denver we headed south through Colorado Springs into New Mexico and finally ended our sojourn at the abode of our friends S and J, a sprawling complex overlooking the tangerine, twinkling glow of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Here are some dramatic sky shots we took during these legs of the trip. Enjoy!
