Let’s get realsies, I don’t often talk about the bad things that happen to me. Like other style bloggers, I just leave it out. I comment on the latest fashion, shoe porn, or post a beauty article with a FOTD shot instead. Have a bad day? Talk about something else. After all this is a style blog, not a personal diary.
But sometimes, life gets really bad. Today was an awful day. Sometimes you just can’t hide it, even if you want to.
And sometimes, in the name of functioning through daily life, you have to hide, at least physically.
The amazing thing about makeup is not only its transformative power, its power to hide things you wish to conceal, they are also a powerful panacea for my depression. Since I can’t buy clothes, I invest in beauty tools. As a future licensed makeup artist and esthetician, buying makeup and skincare is not only an investment in me, but useful research for a future makeup kit inventory.
For some reason, when I find a great beauty product, a little thrill pulsates through me. It’s as if something in beauty products hits my pleasure receptors, and instantly brings a bit of happiness. Call me materialistic, call me superficial, but sometimes you have to put a little beauty on the outside to mask the pain writhing on the inside. And sometimes that outer beauty goes a long way to soothe the inner tempest.
This is what I got recently… And, no, I don’t consider this a haul. I’m not a hauler. I don’t care if you care about this shit, I just love makeup.
Because I have egregious and very, very tenacious undereye circles, I need two concealers, not just one. A concealer and an illuminator that brightens the eye and reflects light, bringing in a illumination to the dark circles.
Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer pencil, a creamy, super blendable pencil concealer that has a matte finish. I’ve tried it several times in the store and really like the creamy consistency. Liquid concealers have proven too thin and liquid for my skin type, so something thicker that dries matte is probably better for my combination skin.
Fresh Supernova Radiance Pen. It’s an illuminator click pen concealer. It brightens and illuminates the eyes with microspheres that brighten and minimize shadows under the eyes. It has natural and organic extracts of cucumber, chamomile and lotus flower to soothe and calm irritated skin, meadowflower seed oil extract to soften, and mulberry extract to brighten and even out dark tones. I’ve had it for two days, so far I love it. It blends into my skin really well.
A must-have in any makeup inventory: a huge eye makeup palette in an array of silky, shimmery colors.
B H Cosmetics 88 Shimmer Palette and the 28 Neutral Palette. I plan on using these for videos this year. They also have a 10 color cream concealer palette, but that’s going a bit overboard. I don’t work in esthetics or make up YET.
Back in December, as a gift to myself, after getting my bonus, I snagged a few things on Gilt Group from Laura Mercier’s flash sale.
Big fan of LM’s lipstains. Less of a stain than a creamy, long, long, long wearing buildable lip color… I have it in the red mulberry wine shade. This English Rose is a nice, natural rosy pink that I currently don’t have in my lip wardrobe.
Normally $20 and $22, I got each at $8 and $10 respectively. I also snagged a collection of LM’s 8 favorite eye colors, the famous Foundation Primer, a nude shimmery gloss and I think another lip color, but I can’t remember…
I also snagged Aveeno’s Smart Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer SPF 30 (wish it were higher), which has Vitamins A, C, E extracts which helps to retain the elasticity of the skin as well as fight aging. I’ll have to combine it with my SPF 70 liquid for higher protection, but I’m happy I got something @ the drugstore that has a higher SPF and has Retinol, Vitamin C (tone evening), and Vitamin E which helps firm and soften the skin.
Skincare and beauty makes me happy. Call me a simple girl. Everything else in my life is complicated enough.
