{ Architecture of an Outfit/OOTD } Bows and Color For Her Waise Choice

Jen T of Her Waise Choice is a constant inspiration for me with her very sophisticated blend of high street fashion and upscale “professional chic” taste. With structured, mature pieces, incredible statement jewelry, and a bold infusion of vivid color blocking, this girl is such an up and coming talent, a formidable force on the Vancouver fashion scene. Not only is she absolutely refined, her enviable style sense is further enhanced by her very young age (22).

With a sweet demeanor that brings smiles to even this staunch grouch, Jen is the fetching example of how I would like to dress (and behave).

So yeah, once I swallow my jealousy, and down a mug [or five] of coffee so that Mae, Raging Bitchface of Death, transforms into Mae, Slightly Decent Human Being, I then get inspired by Jen’s power Femme Fatale vibe, and try to infuse color and more femininity into my daily sartorial choices.

Jen is a big fan of Zara, and since we don’t have Zara here in Detroit, the next best thing are the amazing skirt choices from Club Monaco and tops from H&M. Inspired by her wardrobe, I put together my feminine best and paired it with yellow for a small pop of color, a la HWC. The bows on my Vivienne Westwood Melissa shoes were an after thought, but also very reminiscent of some of the elements Jen puts into her stylings.

I found this gorgeous lace skirt at CM for a steal, so I snatched it up, because both lace and color are things I desperately need in my wardrobe. I probably have about… 16 pieces of Club Monaco in my closet, and they are some of the few items I get tons and tons of wear out of. Most of my clothing isn’t so heavily rotated.

Leave it to me to look confused, awkward, and as little feminine and demure as possible when posing.

Although this outfit is a bit more to the 4th point of my style square–Feminine With a Chip on its Shoulder style, it’s still essentially inspired by HWC while staying true to my more tomboyish, punky nature. The bold shoulder blazer, the very waist cinching belt, the single statement earring, the asinine poses: all Mae-isms.

{ Architecture of an Outfit/OOTD } Ethereal Floating Gold

If you had to define the way I dress, it would be illustrated perfectly by a square.

  1. Office Lady
  2. Home-bound slob
  3. Sweet and feminine with a edgy chip on her shoulder
  4. Edgy with a twinge of girly

Basically, if you flip through a Korean Fashion magazine, you’d pretty much find three of the four aspects of my style (you know, sans the slob part).

Since you are probably well familiar with my Office Lady looks (that’s pretty all I dress for these days)… let me introduce you to the hardly seen “Sweetie with chip on her shoulder”.

When I was lunching with Sillygrrl for a B3 bestie date last week, I decided to throw on lace and ballet style leggings from Emami in some vain hope that Spring had hit, and I was dressing the part…’Cause you know, spring is always all about lace and bows, right? Yeah, it was like 37F and effing cold.

I don’t normally wear such sickly sweet clothing, even on my girliest of days, but I still love lace trends and I would wear it more if we lived in a place where it was warm more than just 5.5 months out of the year.

The moment we got outside the café, we noticed the incredible difference between the temperature from when we arrived, to just three hours later. The variance was palpable: about 10-12 degrees. The difference between light jacket and pea coat or wool coat… strappy sandals with tights or combat boots with wool socks.

In other words: a bitch.

I love Michigan, but let’s say this, I’m quite over winter… and in Michigan, winter likes to make a surprise encore performance several times over. Just when you think Spring has arrived, big, puffy, cotton-like flurries of snow blind the sky and create a semi-thick layer of ice that jams your car door shut, or melts into ugly, jagged icicles that hang low from pine trees and makes the sidewalks perilously slippery.

Thank Universe for golden sunsets. I guess there’s a little beauty for this time of year, albeit very, very slight.

{ Accessory Porn } Scarves… & a farewell to an Iconic Wonder Woman

They are. Like shoes or arm candy, they can instantly elevate the style factor of an ensemble. The hallmark of scarves, though, is that they are much more versatile than shoes. They can be worn as a neck adornment, a hair accessory, a hat, a skirt, a top, a sarong… and of course, to be used to keep the neck warm and cosy. Scarves are the ultimate all season accessory, and something that will be essential with spring trends.

See how celebrity stylist Chriselle Lim along with makeup artist Michelle Phan and hair guru Krista Bradford transform a scarf nine different ways.

RIP, Liz Taylor.

She wasn’t afraid of Virginia Woolf. I suspect she wasn’t afraid of facing her own mortality, either.

She was fierce, ferocious, fantastic, and absolutely fearless. I can picture her sweeping grandly right up to the Gates of Heaven and saying, “Open up! I’m here.”

Fare thee well, Liz.

Spring Trends: I think I can Live With It

Yes, there are some questionable trends for spring. Flat plats. I think they make people’s feet look like that of a duck.

I am wearing them today.

Exhibit A: Flat Plats

Exhibit B: Mae in Flat Plats

Verdict: Just no.

I told you I have bad style decisions sometimes. These felt like the least painful shoes for a heavy lupus flare morning where my hips are inflamed. But still, they are really ugly, and I’m starting to wish I had suffered through the pain of a more stylish pair instead.

There are a couple trends out there some people find rather dubious. Take turbans, for instance. They have been on the runways and worn on praised heads such as Mary-Kate Olsen. However, for some reason, lots of style gurus decry and revile them, while street and style bloggers extol their awesomeness.

As it goes, regardless of the debate within the communities of fashion and blogosphere, turbans and other similar head adornments were all over the Spring/Summer 2011 runways.

You know what? When combined with spring’s ubiquitous swingy, ruffly, feminine features, it achieves a lovely retro-vintage glam vibe, hearkening back to the halcyon days depicted in summer romance movies of the late 50s and early 60s (a la Sofia Loren, Bridgitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, just to name a few).

If the effect brings any iconic names to mind, I honestly can live with it. I won’t necessarily be wearing it, because my execution really stinks, but I can definitely live with it. Like it, even!

Are there any trends on the Spring/Summer 2011 runways you abhor or adore? Do Share!

I’m hosting a jewelry giveaway of a statement ruffle bib necklace by Detroit jewelry designer Pretty Things by Meg. Have you entered the giveaway yet? Ends Sunday night. Tell your friends. CLICK HERE to enter!
