Weekend Recap: Mau‘i No Ka Oi

Aloha Kakahiaka, Lovecat! It’s Hump Day! Yay!

Here is what my weekend looked like. WARNING: Picture Heavy. My weekend started on Thursday, since I had a mini-vacation planned for four days with my Mama-in-Law in town from Detroit.

Saturday

  • 4AM wake up call for trying to catch sunrise from Hale‘akala, Maui’s large volcano, measuring at 10,000 feet above sea level (3,048m)
  • Sunrise fail. The summit was all socked in with clouds. We saw nothing. (Here is what Hale‘akala really looks like when you can at least see something. EPIC.)
  • After getting lost, a satisfying breakfast in Kula under coffee trees, serenaded by a local musician singing Hawaiian folk tunes on his acoustic and slide guitars. Epic.
  • Naps.
  • Road trip out to Iao Valley, hoping to get some good photos, but the valley was also wreathed in clouds and raining hard. The sacred area was still gorgeous, even in the mist and downpour.
  • Quick snack and coffee to warm up at Whole Foods where we ran into my bestie boo, Sharon and her hubby Eli(sha) by chance! Talk about good fortune! And yes, I can’t believe they dress this AMAZE for running errands, either!
  • Road trippin’ out to the west side of West Maui volcano to photograph mountains, sunset chase and catch dindin with Eli*Sharon.
  • Hammin for OOTD pics with Shar and Eli, while Husby and Mama got bored and waited in the car. LOL. Pictures to come from this “sesh” later.

Sunday

  • Mother’s Day Brunch at Market Fresh Bistro, complete with apple banana (Hawaiian banana) Nutella fritters for dessert. YUM.
  • Road trip on the hair-raising, winding and sometimes harrowing, Road to Hana (also seen here from our trip to Maui last year)
  • Lots of waterfalls gushing from rocks and rivers and swollen streams on the hair-pin Road to Hana… I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you some of these waterfalls terrified me–all the water and power? OMG.
  • Saw and felt the softest, pillowy black sand at Hana Bay Beach.
  • Dinner at Hana Ranch Restaurant… nothing to speak of.
  • Terrifying drive back to Makawao in the dark on the Road to Hana, which I did all on my own, no switching. *Pats self on back*
  • Chilling at home and then passing the heck out at 9PM.

{ Home… and welcome by the second worst traffic in the country. }

Monday

  • 3:45AM Wake up call to try to re-attempt another sunrise from Hale‘akala, given the clear and warm weather forecasts in Makawao and Kula.
  • Stuck behind a string of slow-driving idiot tourists all in Mustangs… we reached the summit, only for it to be wrapped in wet, super cold clouds, AGAIN!
  • Total fail.
  • Stuck behind slow-driving idiotic tourists who stopped in the middle of the road–with traffic behind them and bikers streaming past going down-mountain–to take a phone-pic of a rainbow. PULL OVER TO THE SIDE on the sanctioned shoulder, dummies! Don’t cause accidents, you morons! (I am so sorry to report, but they were my people: Asians! GOD, MUST YOU PERPETUATE THE STEREOTYPE?! Piss me off.)
  • Milquetoast breakfast a Kula Lodge Restaurant where there were literally two vegan options, Rice and Papaya. I had the pancakes and immediately regretted it. They were nice and fluffy and tasty, but I don’t eat dairy or eggs… total bad idea. My Mamasita reported that her french toast was so so. Not a recommendation, if you’re a vegan, or expect a gourmet experience.
  • BNB check out.
  • Airport to return car and fly back to O‘ahu. – Least interesting view from our window. We were stuck next to the engine and wing. We could see nothing from the plane. :(
  • Stuck in Honolulu traffic (second worst in the nation!) to pick up Bear from the kennel.
  • Dinner and then immediately went to bed, super exhausted!

Now I’m home, back to reality and already making a wish list for our next trip to Maui! I wish we could go SOON! We’re so lucky to have all these amazing places to see so close by! Thanks, Husby, for the amazing birthday/mother’s day getaway. Best present ever. <3

More detail of our trip later!

Life in Pictures: A Bear and His Mama Spend a Weekend

This weekend Max and I were without Nate, who was still in Detroit visiting his family and setting up his brick and mortar office for his development business GRID LLC. Much of the weekend involved running errands, going for long drives, taking lots of walks up and down on the sidewalks of our mountainside neighborhood, frolicking at the dog park, lounging in the living room and sleeping.

Max the Bear lounging on our guest room bed, uninvited.

Life in Pictures: A Bear-y Max and Mama Weekend

In the house, Max lounges around, quite lazy, dozing off in one spot, only to wake up an hour later, stalk to another spot and stretch out there. The only time he seems active and lively is when I’m eating and he follows me around, begging for treats with his extremely expressive eyes. Other than that, he’s lying around somewhere. In the hallway, under a table, on a guest bed without being invited…always asleep or on the verge of dozing off.

Wheaten Terrier, Hawaii Living, thereafterish, Max the Bear, Honolulu life

Max, lounging in the cool, dark hallway. One of his favorite spots.

Someone’s following me around…

Wheaten Terrier, Hawaii Living, thereafterish, Max the Bear, Honolulu life

Are you looking for something, Mr. Bear?

Wheaten Terrier, Hawaii Living, thereafterish, Max the Bear, Honolulu life

… Oh, you want treats? Cookies? Schneke? … Beggar Bear.

I, on the other hand, am more committed to my lounging spots. I park my ass firmly onto a specific corner of our comfy couch and I lay back, feasting my eyes on the bountiful visual delights of my new boyfriend, HGTV (Home and Garden TV network). I occasionally get up to empty my bladder, find the Bear and lavish him with Friendship (a currency in his country!) or skulk to the kitchen to rummage through our barren cabinets for something to snack on, only to realize moments later that we don’t keep snacks in the house for the very reason that we binge when we indulge ourselves in hours-long sessions with the TV. Dangit.

When we tire of lounging (who could do such a thing!), we go outside. I either take him on a specific loops of streets in our neighborhood, craning my neck here and there for a view of the ocean (not hard to find), or I take him to the dog park at the bottom of the mountain.

Wheaten Terrier, Hawaii Living, thereafterish, Max the Bear, Honolulu life

Max successfully terrorized the big dogs and remains the victorious Bear of the wilderness.

Wheaten Terrier, Hawaii Living, thereafterish, Max the Bear, Honolulu life

Max, pouncing.

Max comes alive when he hits the grass at the dog park. The lounging, somnolent little bugger becomes a leaping, bouncy beast, pouncing on nearby dogs and dog-parents alike. He reserves no judgement and withholds no affection. He loves all moving creatures alike (though he hasn’t started to gravitate toward purse dogs, yet… like mother, like son, I suppose!).

This weekend, he chose a specific doggy dad to follow around the park between our fast-paced frisbee fetch and tag game. Coming up to me to comment on Max’s cuteness, the man diplomatically received Max’s fierce onslaught of Wheaten Greetin’ and Friendship exchanging. When Max calmed a bit a few minutes later, he leaned heavily against the man’s leg while the man scratched behind Max’s ears. Oh, what a spoiled one.

When it was time for more Frisbee, Max ran for it, but in a moment of distraction by a newcomer big dog, he ran off into the pack to jump and punch and play with all the other kids…. and then he discovered and immediately fell in love with the dog park’s mudhole. Breaking off my conversation with the doggy dad, I ran off to retrieve the frisbee and Max only to discover him lying down full in the mud, legs, stomach and all.

Wheaten Terrier, Hawaii Living, thereafterish, Max the Bear, Honolulu life

Where’s Max? Too tired to find his way out of those treacherous curtains!

I hosed him off when we got home and then we both promptly collapsed into our respective beds, Max, so tired he couldn’t be bothered to maneuver his head around the curtain that half-covered him.

Wheaten Terrier, Hawaii Living, thereafterish, Max the Bear, Honolulu life

When he’s super REM-ing, he sleeps on his back, full on Grocery Store frozen food aisle chicken style.

Wheaten Terrier, Hawaii Living, thereafterish, Max the Bear, Honolulu life

Tuckered Bear, tuckered Bear mama. Lazy Sunday.

Sunday, we slept a lot, snuggled a lot and didn’t go near the dogpark, having thoroughly tired ourselves out.

It was a good weekend.

How was your weekend?

Life in Pictures: Pearl Harbor

{ Rewind Wednesday }. Back in March, my Auntie A and Uncle L visited and I took them to tour Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor. Salute. Honor. Remember.

Hawaii Living: Touring Pearl Harbor

Despite living here for close to 5 months by that point, it was my first experience visiting Pearl Harbor. The Hawai‘i resident in me kind of balked and pissed and moaned about having to contend with clueless tourists in the parking lot and in the tour queues. Little did I know, I was in for one of the most humbling, educational and emotional trips of my new Hawaii Life.

A quote from Eleanor Roosevelt asking for the grace and humility to remember that people had given their lives for hers.

Eleanor Roosevelt kept this prayer written on a simple note card in her wallet throughout the duration of World War II. The prayer is inscribed into a slab of stone in a small area of the walkway directly facing Ford Island and the place where many warships and naval boats sunk and hundreds of military men died in the attack.

Dear Lord,
Lest I continue
My complacent way
Help me to remember somehow out there
A man died for me today
As long as there be war
I then must
Ask and answer
Am I worth dying for?

Eleanor was humble and quite wise.

A shiny, phallus… torpedo.

All the weaponry around awakened the silly 12 year old boy living deep within my soul (you know, the one that still likes videogames, comics, Sci-Fi and weapons). After gunning an imaginary bogey from the skies and staring (and snickering) at the large phallus of a shiny sub torpedo… I sobered up to the somber truth that these were and are weapons of destruction and have inflicted incalculable harm, ripping lives, families and countries apart.

War is truly an ugly, ugly, terrifying thing.

Tree of life monument to the amazing honor and sacrifice of the men and women who gave their lives in the attack of Pearl Harbor.

The Tree of Life memorial sculpture at the World War II Valor in the Pacific Memorial at Pearl Harbor by artist Alfred Preis symbolizing eternal renewal. It is meant for us to remember the sacrifice of the men (and their families) who were casualties of the brutality of war, but also to honor and understand the war and to extend that understanding and peace to the Japanese. It is a reminder to honor the dead, remember the war and sacrifice and to understand and grow together.

The memorial shrine.

If you want to learn more about Pearl Harbor or want to plan your visit there, you can get more information from their official website: Pearl Harbor Historic Sites.

Tickets to most of the memorials at Pearl Harbor are free and so is parking, but in order to ensure a parking space, it’s best to arrive when they open at 7AM. You can also reserve Pearl Harbor tickets online with a minimal booking fee through the National Parks Services Pearl Harbor website.

If you’re planning on touring the USS Arizona and walking around the park, I’d say reserve about 2-4 hours of your day. The tour of the Arizona includes a line, a 25 minute documentary, a ferry ride and a 20 minute tour of the memorial shrine. All in all it’s about 90 minutes not including lining up and round trip ferry ride.

thereafterish, Hawaii Living, Pearl Harbor Tour, Oahu living, Hawaii sight seeing

Tree of Life monument motif in memoriam of the men of the USS Arizona.

Touring Pearl Harbor is one of the most educational experiences you can have. It’s a testament to the fortitude, resilience and tenacity of the human spirit, and its ability to rise above adversity and fight. But the memorial also literally a grave site and a place for somber contemplation, remembrance, and reverent honor, a place to learn and understand the deep meaning of war and its consequences.

I wish you love, prosperity, beauty and happiness.
