Life Inspo: Dare to Roam

Aloha, Lovecat.

Do you ever find yourself at a crossroads and find yourself taking the path of ease or foreseeable outcome, because the thought of taking path of the unknown is too harrowing? I do that all the time. One of my life lessons on the path of seeking happiness is learning how to be brave by nursing a sense of curiosity and striking out on adventures when that impulse hits.

{ Life Inspo: How to Be Brave – Dare to Roam }

roam if you want to graphic, real girls facebook, road less traveled, thereafterish, how to be brave

Don’t be afraid to take the road less traveled.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
–Robert Frost

Dare to brave the unknown. Sate your curiosity and travel the path your mind tells you is not the way to go. Your inner inhibitions could be holding you back from success, adventure, or, most importantly, JOY. If you don’t have a sense of curiosity, have you grown complacent with your life and gotten comfortable with your stable existence, or has your everyday become so habitual that it’s hard to break out of a rut to discover a sense of adventure and thrill?

That’s me, pretty often. With big and small decisions, with the exception of shopping. I hold myself back all the time. But some of the biggest and best things that have happened in my life were the result of taking a plunge into the Great Unknown and my life improved and changed dramatically.

For example: I met my husband on the internet eight years ago, and, after a thorough and intense vetting process, we embarked on a long distance relationship for several months. After it became apparent that both of us were going broke with the back and forth across the country and both were tiring of the late night phone calls and missing each other, I made a quick decision to leave my life in San Diego, California and move to Detroit, Michigan to be with him. Though I didn’t love living in Michigan, it still was the best decision I ever made. It wasn’t easy, and that decision could have ended up disastrously, but if I quibbled and teetered and ultimately stuck with my gut reaction to stay in my safe, normal existence in Southern California, I wouldn’t be in Hawaii today.

Second example: When it seemed like my relationship with Husby (N) was going nowhere after three years, I was on the verge of moving out, frustrated with not knowing whether he was going to propose with the d*mn ring we’d bought together over a year before. I had a potential roommate lined up, had a couple of apartments I was ready to visit and sign the lease on and everything. But a month of debate said, stick with him for awhile, even if you have no idea if this will turn out well. We went to Hawaii and he broadsided me with a proposal after a particularly dangerous hike.

Of course, I said yes. If I’d said, “EFF THIS NOT KNOWING SH*T” right off the bat and dismissed what N might’ve been planning, I might’ve lost out on the best thing ever.

After giving myself a reasonable time frame, I decided to trust him just a little more, and it turned out okay. (More than OK.)

Though I am my own worst enemy, when I feel a sense of curiosity and act upon it, it leads to the most enriching experiences. If I let myself say, “I need to go the most comfortable path,” I end up getting stuck in a rut and not progressing. I have probably missed out on countless job opportunities because of this. I say, “I like where I am, I know what I’m doing, I’m good at it. I may not be happy, but I’m doing okay. I’m just not qualified or knowledgable or smart enough for {INSERT THING HERE}” or “but that’s not safe or comfortable” or “but that’s going to cost me a lot money” and who knows what could’ve happened? Something good. The worst that could’ve happened if I’d tried just a little would be that someone would say “no,” and I’d still be where I was before, having lost nothing, and gained a useful experience of how to be better next time or just obtained an enriching experience.

In 2006 one of us had the idea to go somewhere, being tired of hanging out in Michigan during the nasty Midwest Summer… just randomly saying, “I’d love to visit Munich one day.” The other (can’t remember who) said, “yeah, let’s do that.” And instead of just leaving it there in fantasyland, we both started Googling places to stay, things to see, places to eat, how to speak German. Next thing you know, we were looking up plane ticket prices and then booking fares and hotels. Next thing you know, we were IN Germany taking the U-Bahn through Berlin, looking at graffiti on the Berlin Wall, traipsing through castles in Bavaria (all on a very strict, very small budget, I might proudly add!).

Instead of just saying we were curious about a place, we decided to GO to that place.

Adventure doesn’t have to be about splashing out on trips around the world or buying that IT pair of shoes. In fact, acting on a quick impulse of curiosity can be absolutely free. A trip around the block to check out the nearest new café, exploring a new beach, hiking to a top of a nearby mountain trail and seeing the ocean, losing yourself in the pages of a book you’ve been meaning to read, a stimulating conversation with a person you barely know, learning how to play an instrument… the world is your oyster, and you don’t even have to travel all around it.

There are universes of adventure everywhere you look as long as you encourage your curiosity and open your eyes to see the potential.

Happiness isn’t about doing what’s comfortable. It’s about seeking the things that enrich your life, grabbing as tightly as you can and sucking the juice out of them.

Don’t be afraid to roam when an impulse hits you. Don’t listen to the little voice inside cautioning you to stick to what you know. Nurse that sense of adventure and say “Eff It” to the unknown. Or, it could be the best thing in your life may be awaiting the very moment that you decide to waken your inner adventurer. The worst that could happen is that you fall on your ass. And if that happens, get up again, dust yourself off and keep traveling. Nothing is more sexy than a fulfilled, confident, resilient and well-traveled [emotionally, mentally and geographically] woman (or man).

Rock on, lovers!

Namasté

I honor the place within you where the entire Universe resides; I honor the place within you of love, of light, of truth, of peace; I honor the place within you, where, when you are in that place in [yourself], and I am in that place in [myself], there is only one of us.–Mahatma Gandhi

I wish this peace for all of us during this weird time of juxtaposition: of crisis and celebration, mourning and camaraderie, politics and holiday. I wish this for you. I wish this for me. I wish this for my family. May we all find that place of love, light, truth and peace within ourselves, and recognize it and honor it in others.

How to Be Happy #5: Watch a Sunset on a Quiet Windless Day (And a Giveaway Winner)

Sunset Chasing: Taking a moment to enjoy the setting sun after a long work week, the waves lapping quietly on the shore, no winds to harry us or disturb the serenity of the moment. This is happiness. The utter calm of a windless, golden evening.

{ How to Be Happy #5: Watch a Sunset and Breathe. }

Ahhhh… Keep Calm and Watch a Sunset.

I worked late on Friday evening. Not feeling like going home after work, I deliberately missed the turn off the highway that would’ve taken me through my little town to the road winding up the mountain ridge to our home. As I passed the bay that fronts our community, I noticed the clouds wisping across the sky, light glinting off the delicate, lace-like edges, glowing like light glinting off satin. Kayak teams rowed mightily across the lazy waters. The sun inched lower and lower, dipping to hug the horizon, blazing gold and amber.

I turned quickly into one of the parking lots along the shore to watch the light show’s final moments.

Kayak teams practice in the last rays of the day. Diamond Head looms quietly in the background as the day ends. Maunalua Bay, Hawaii Kai, Oahu, Hawaii.

Taking the time–even short, spontaneous moments like this–to enjoy the wealth of beauty Hawaii has to offer… this brings happiness. I know how lucky I am to live here. Curses on me should I ever forget it.

How to Be Happy #4: Quick Pick Me Up – Brighten Up!

Aloha, Lovecat. I think you know what I mean when I say, today is just one of those days.

{ How to Be Happy #4: I need a MAJOR pick me up, stat! }

I’m not going to lie, I woke up in a slightly foul mood, only compounded by the strange feelings of queasiness, dizziness and pain I’ve been feeling all morning. I mean, why would my usual morning coffee almost induce vomiting? Why did I have to choke down that cantaloupe instead of being able to savor it like normal? Why couldn’t I stand for more than a few minutes at a time? Why did my shoulder hurt so much I had to take my bra off? Why couldn’t I turn my head without wanting to cry? It seemed like today was the crap icing on top of a week of random strange illnesses (probably lupus-related), and today I was literally sick of it all–EVERYTHING was starting to piss me off.

Especially my face. Lookin’ all sallow and worn out. I wanted to punch that face I saw in the mirror.

And then I started feeling like all this frustration was just snowballing itself. I look like crap because I feel like crap, and because I feel like crap, I look like crap–a self-perpetuating cycle.

Was there something I could do to make myself at least feel better, even if there was no quick pick-me-up for my body ailments?

Answer: Yes. Lipstick and a smile.

thereafterish, what i wore, pick me up, lipstick, brighten up, lipstick mood lifter

It sounds stupid, but wearing a bright lipstick can be an instant mood lifter. Try it.

Cue dramatic eye rolls and incredulity! Okay, but before I totally lose you… let me explain!

I work in sun protection/anti-aging/skincare for my day job, so I spend a lot of time immersed in beauty magazines, beauty blogs, medical “beauty” and health sites. Time and time again, I keep reading that the one of the ways to perk yourself up is to swipe on a bright color of lipstick. It instantly brightens and lifts the face and makes you look more awake. When you look more awake, alert and brighter, it can contribute to a change in your confidence and self-esteem levels, even if only temporarily. This temporary boost increases mood levels, which decreases stress levels and increases immunity. So, by making you feel better about yourself, you reduce your stress and boost your body’s health and mood.

To magnify this boost, make yourself smile. It’s okay if you fake it. Smile at a stranger crossing the street. Smile at that blog post you’re reading. Smile at the person in the car next to you during your commute to work or school. Smile at that snarky e-card on Facebook. If you make yourself smile and laugh, the behavior can actually lead to an increase in endorphins, which alleviates stress and anxiety. Behavior conditions attitude and vice versa. It’s Psychology 101.

It seems so superficial, but the numerous studies I’ve come across appear to show actual medical/psychological validity of the lipstick theory.

thereafterish, what i wore, pick me up, lipstick, brighten up, lipstick mood lifter

Wearing: mixture of Revlon’s Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm in “Crush” (deep raspberry) and MAC Ruby Woo (true red).

So I put on a bright raspberry red lipstick (and a good amount of concealer on my dark circles) and I made myself smile. A bunch. No, seriously, like a grip of smiling.

Am I still pissed? Nope. Am I still sore and nauseous? Yes, but it doesn’t seem to bother me quite as much. I’ll call it a win for lipstick.

Do you have any tips for quick pick me ups when you’re having A Day? Would love to hear some!

Day in the Life: Lessons From the Bees

Everyday, as I make my way up the stairs from our lower level Ohana Unit (apartment unit in a detached family home) to the streetside, I’m accompanied by the thrum of bees pollinating the tree on our hill. The soft hum is a soothing low sound, like a harp string in a low key plucked and drawn out. It’s a quiet reminder that nature is amazing and that hard, industrious work yields sweet results.

The lesson is there for me everyday if I just remember to listen.

Except the bees were not humming as usual this morning. The wind was turbulent and whipped through the flowering trees that shade the stairs up to the street.

It somehow felt off-kilter. An essential part of my morning, my daily reminder to be productive, happy and motivated, had been silenced.

The silence in and of itself, however, was enough of a reminder to be present and fruitful today while I can…before a roaring wind of life quiets opportunity. A salient suggestion from the Universe to live in each moment, embrace it and milk from it every available drop. Beauty, happiness and success can only happen now, when I choose this moment to take it for myself.

Still, I can only hope the buzzing continues tomorrow.

Life’s a Beach: Salt Water Philosophies To Live By

I’ve truly lived by these words the last couple of weekends, and have come to believe that if one lives by the sea and does not spend time in it, she is allowing part of her soul to languish.

Saltwater Philosophy to live by: “The cure for anything is saltwater: sweat, tears or the sea.” – Isak Dineson

There is much truth to Isak Dineson‘s quote. The cure for the many of the soul’s ills is saltwater.

How to Be Happy #3: Opportunities in the Sunrise and Symbolism in the Sunset

Find happiness each day with the realization that you get to choose your path to bliss. Learning how to be happy isn’t really hard at all, once you know your own power.

thereafterish, Hawaii, Hawaii sunset, sunset in Hawaii, Sunset pictures, Hawaii Sunset picture

Sunsets in Hawaii are absolutely brilliant. And a good reminder of the opportunities that lie in the day ahead.

How to Be Happy: The Road to Beauty and Bliss is all About Seeking Happiness and Choosing It

This is a lesson I have to teach myself every single day:

It’s easy to forget who you are when you are desperately looking for the path to happiness. Roadblocks get in your way and you stumble. You can lose the greater picture and your goal if all you do is focus on the path itself. You have to look up and look ahead.

That’s why sunset and sunrise can be good reminders of the things to come, and the chances you have each day. Each moment presents a chance to choose.

You can choose to learn a lesson or be bogged down in grief. You can choose to let a momentary panic eat at you or you can choose to let it wash over you, then get the heck over it and move on. You can choose to laugh or cry. You can choose wallowing or take action to surmount the next obstacle or tough moment.

When you realize you have an infinite number of choices, and that happiness and contentment is one of those choices, you have incredible power over your life and your destiny.

thereafterish, SLC, Sunrise over rockies, Rocky mountain sunrise, sunrise over Rocky Mountains, Sunrise in Salt Lake City

Sunrise over the Rockies in Salt Lake City. Sunrise is a symbol for all the new opportunities and choices you can make on the road to happiness today.

Each day, the sunset represents the endless wealth of opportunity of the infinite moments to come and the renewal of life in the sunrise that waits in the wings to take the stage.

How you choose to live those moments can determine your happiness.

Choose well!

Road to Beauty & Bliss #2: Best Face and Foot Forward

{ How to Be Happy #2: Put Your Best Face and Best Foot Forward and Always Keep Going Forward }

Here’s my beauty, style and happiness mantra of the moment:

No matter what happens, live your life! Don’t let anything else stop you–not one person on this world has the power to stand in your way if you choose not to let them.

In your everyday
FASHION,
FACE/APPEARANCE/ATTITUDE,
WORK,
RELATIONSHIPS…
never stop being YOU and never let someone else’s negative energy put you down (even if that person is you). NEVER STOP GOING FORWARD.

Always put your best foot and face forward–in a great pair of heels, with a straight back and a fabulous shade of lipstick.

Here are my important (physical) tools for getting up and at ‘em and moving forward!

thereafterish, shoe porn, asian street style fashion, yellow shoes, yellow heels

Shoe Porn: wearing a great pair of shoes can instantly va-va-va-voom and outfit, and perk up your meh mood. Trust me. Shoes are to an outfit as lipstick is to the face: both pack a visual punch and can perk you up in an instant!

thereafterish, shoe porn, asian street style fashion, cage heels

Shoe Porn: a great pair of heels can change your outfit from blah to AH! Plus it makes shorties like me less “DOWN HERE.” :)

thereafterish, ootd, asian street style fashion, good posture for good outfit, asia street style

A straight back and good posture is the sign of true confidence, but is also necessary to make any outfit look GOOD.

thereafterish, red lips, perfect shade of red, universal red lipstick, perfect red lipstick, mac Ruby Woo, Nuance Beauty Paprika

The perfect shade of red for me is a pure/true red with no blue base: MAC’s Ruby Woo is the perfect red for every skin tone, or this one here by Nuance Beauty (sold at Longs or CVS stores) called Paprika.

Let’s always empower each other on this road to beauty and bliss!

How to Be Happy #1: Decision Time

Let’s start out the week with Beauty/Happiness Mae’s Mantra of the Moment.

Happiness is a decision you make every moment of everyday. I choose happiness and living my life without regret today.

You can choose happiness. It might be contrived, but after awhile, you’ll begin to feel it. The change will well up within you, from your center, and radiate outward until all of you pulses with happiness.

Behavior conditions attitude. Choose Happiness. Today.

Happiness: Rolling in the Deep

Happiness can be infectious. Happiness goes deep within, to banish the stale, negative, in-grained emotions, thoughts and energy, to achieve a peaceful contentment or Nirvana.

A forced smile. A deep forced laugh. Even forced behavior. The choice to engage that positive action is a trigger that conditions your brain to release tension, intensity and negative or stale energy. Behavior conditions attitude. Through the decision to force yourself to behave happy, you open and prepare your heart and mind to happiness.

Try it. Laughter therapy is real. Smile therapy is real. I tried it this morning.

I took huge, deep, gulping breaths and then laughed deeply, ridiculously. Once, twice. It sounded stupid. I felt idiotic. Then I began to laugh at myself for real. And all the stress that I’d been feeling for the last 24 hours fell away. I smiled… not a sticker smile that hurts your cheeks. But a real smile… I wasn’t necessarily happy at that moment. But I made a conscious choice to start my day on the right foot.

And you know what?

It’s been a great day so far.

Happiness goes deep. You just have to CHOOSE IT.

All This Beauty #1. & Valentine’s Day Giveaway

I can see your new awake
Let me assure you friend:
Every day is ice cream and chocolate cake
And what you make of it, let me say
You get what you take from it so be amazed
And never stop, never stop, never stop
You gotta be brave

‘Cause all this beauty
You might have to close your eyes
And slowly open wide
And watch the sun rise

“All This Beauty”, The Weepies

Today was a good day.

{ Five beauteous things. }

1.) Rounding out the night, nerding out, snacking on beta-carotine packed baby carrots and protein-rich organic hummus from Trader Joe’s. (Beauty buffs know that beta-carotine is the purest form of Vitamin A (aka Retinol), which helps with skin texture, tone and blemishes as well as is one of the most powerful anti-aging antioxidants found in nature.)

2.) An incredibly cute husband who nerds out with me on Sunday night, and lets me sit idly by while I play video games.

3.) Playing above-mentioned video games. Namely, Final Fantasy I for iPhone. (The World is Square!)

4.) Finally importing and getting to edit a bit of footage from a couple weeks back, when my cousin and I filmed 5 beauty videos worth of footage for my first skincare and beauty films for YouTube. Yea! That beautiful cranium in the photo is my cousin Ria, a wonderful and gorgeous model to work on.

5.) The Chrysler “Imported From Detroit” Super Bowl 45 commercial.

I was born in British Columbia, Canada. I spent about 18 years in San Diego, California, and I am, by nature, culture and most distinctly, accent, Southern Californian.

I may not have grown up here, but I proudly name myself as a Detroiter as anyone who came from here. Don’t knock my town, don’t try to knock us down if you ain’t been here. Don’t act like you know–you have no effin’ clue.

This is a grand town. And some of the best people are Imported From Detroit.

On another note! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and I’m pleased to present a thereafterish. beauty giveaway in honor of this day.
