Architecture of an Outfit: Lazy Day Essentials: How to Get Away With Not Shaving Your Legs

Aloha, Lovecat,

Let’s face it, women are under pressure to always look good, either by society, media or even ourselves. And, in all honesty, it’s a lot of effing work, ain’t it? Who always has the energy to constantly have the perfectly coiffed and turned out hairstyle, flawless skin, glowing makeup and well-chosen clothes? And that’s just the surface stuff! What about the energy and time invested into the maintenance of it all? We have to treat our skin and aging concerns, tweeze those eyebrows, file and manicure those nails and shave those legs. Seriously, it’s a ton of work and, while it often has a great effect on our psyches, it can take a toll on us from the sheer amount of effort required.

Sometimes you just want to cut corners!

I’ll let you in on a little secret: I hate shaving my gams. I have a depilator, whose effects of hair removal can last for a good week to two weeks before hair regrowth, but the time to depilate is exponentially more consuming than a quick shave. But even shaving? I hate it. That extra 5-6 minutes in the shower is a lot of wasted water (even though I usually turn off the shower), time and energy trying to maintain my balance.

This is why you will catch me in a maxi dress, maxi skirt or leggings more often than shorts and shorter skirts. This is my secret to cutting my beauty corners and shortening time spent in the bathroom. I don’t shave my legs unless I have a pair of shorts or skirt I’m dying to wear or my family and I are going to the beach. The rest of the time, you’ll find me in leggings, jeans, or a maxi dress or skirt!

WHEW! That’s a huge load off my chest.

So, next time, when you’re pressed for time and energy, and you just want to forgo one of those stupid steps to getting your perfection on, just get back to the basics and put on some jeans or a maxi with a fantastic print. You’ll be glad you just shaved by! HAH!

Rock on, Lover!

{ Architecture of an Outfit } 80′s Nautical Boho Floral Water Color Feline

Wore this on Friday…Been seeing stripes/nautical tops worn with leopard a lot lately. So glad I’m not the only one clashing this hard. Especially when I see hard hitting, popular bloggers doing it, I know I’m doing something right!

Some people question the sanity of contrasting prints, especially when “tried and true”, established rules of fashion usually dictate that fashion should match. But again and again, I say in this forum:

The rules of fashion are meant to be broken; Fashion is ever-changing.

Why mix, or why match…

… when you can clash?

How awesome is this jean jacket with 2 back pockets? I got it a long time ago in a mall store dedicated to Korean fashion. Sadly, the place went out of business, but I made sure to snag quite a few items from there, and this is one of the last pieces I have from the lot, but I absolutely love it to death, despite it starting to fray at the sleeves. Because of the two cell-phone sized pockets on the back, it is so much more unique than other 80′s stone washed jean jackets. Win.

The peplum striped top is from Korea by a fashion label called Redopin, which is a great, edgy (with feminine styles, too) brand sold exclusively through Yes Style. As soon as I saw the tunic with such a different peplum silhouette, I knew I really wanted to wear it. There’s a lot of peplum out there, but not like this.

Previously, I’ve seen lots of water color skirts, but not like this either. Putting it together with the creme and black seemed like such a perfect idea.

The leopard scarf? I honestly don’t know how I’ve gone my entire life without one. I don’t think I could ever banish it from my closet. Ever.

Put it all together? And you have a nautical, watercolor boho feline living in the 80s. I love all the clashy-clashy goodness.

Week in Pictures ~ May 16 – May 21, 2011

I think this will be a weekly thing with me.

Being that I carry a nice 5MPX camera with me at all times (it’s nice, this iPhone, isn’t it?), I’ve been snapping a lot more photos than normal, even though I have a lovely 10.1MPX camera with a Leica lens (Panasonic Lumix LX5). It’s just easier to tote my iPhone around without the extra bulk of a HD/Semi-manual camera. You already know I’m a huge bag lady, but after almost a year of carrying 1 iPhone (3G 8GB), 1 iPod (80GB), a large notebook AND a half face of makeup for touch ups, it was time to de-bulk….

Having a phone that is also faster than the iPhone I was using for a year… I get a little trigger happy with the Lomo-esque camera apps. I think I now have 7 camera apps on my phone, including photo editing software. Ahhh. Joy.

No dog I have ever known is this “well-documented”. I take pictures of Bear[dog] whenever I can, because he’s always doing weird and/or cute things. I may not have a maternal instinct/inclination in my psyche toward children, but toward my own furry “child”, I could never be accused of negligence or being unloving.

After I gave him a corrective “hair cut” after he had come from the groomer (trimmed his “Snoopy Ears” down to the Bear-like short style).

Picked out a birthday card for my BFF Lily.

Why do 95% of all cards created specifically for females look like a cupcake bakery that threw up on a Crayola Box? I think greeting card designers are playing a joke on us. Thankfully I found 1 that didn’t make me yak, but only after I had scoured the racks for 15 straight minutes. *barf*

When I had work to do….

I doodled instead, about what I looked like…

…and how I felt.

Spent a LOT of time on the phone (at work).

Some of which I was on the phone with my friend CK, to whom I dedicated several Instagram/Tumblr picture posts since we’d spent SOOOO Much time emailing and phoning each other.

Lomo app crazy.

I cooked and ate lots of delicious, nutricious vegetarian or vegan food.

Thursday, my father-in-law took me out for sushi as a belated birthday lunch. (Yet moar food!)

Um… Sushi boat?? WHAT!

Bad weather. SICK of Bipolar weather in Lake Country. 86F/30C and sunny and humid one day, 58F/14.44C the next with thunderstorms & clouds. What happened to Spring? Oh, there it is! Wait, no, it’s summer. Wait no, it’s spring again. WTF. #Detroit.

Hair & Clothes (’cause I went shopping on Friday with my girl friend A, with whom I haven’t hung out in months).

(Yes, still wearing this T. I love its drapiness.)

Saturday woke up, feeling hung over from actually getting rest after a week of insomnia…. drowned myself in 3 mugs of Green Tea just to wake up…

…cleaned the kitchen, while entertained by The Voice [Hello, Mr. Adam Levine... you are so fine].

Joy riding to the lake.

Went to the Lake on Sunday, and saw my close friend E’s house for the first time. So charming I had to take pix on the tour.

I have a thing for Kitchens & Bathrooms–the two rooms in the house I use the most. Most brill vintage stove vent in their main kitchen.

Laid out by the lake for Girl Talk & cocktails in SPORTS BOTTLES with E. *Classiest broads on the Lake.*

Gave myself a facial & tried a new towel tying technique.

Project 808 Research (for our relocation to Hawaii in Jan), and the birthday card my MIL got me two weeks ago… reminds her of me when I was a little girl [oddly, very similar].

Cooking another new dish: Roasted Portobella mushroom steaks marinated in onion garlic balsamic vinegar sauce (also vegan), served with Roasted rosemary lemon potatoes with sea salt, lemon pepper & butter & herb salad. (I made enough potatoes to last us 3 days.)

…Max ate very, very precisely [he always does this] while Mummy cooked.

Finished product:

… I miscalculated the amount of time to prep the potatoes and mushrooms, and ended up taking 2h15m to cook the meal. We ended up eating around midnight.

So that was my week last week!

How was yours? What did you do? See? Or, most importantly, EAT?

I also hit my 1 year blog anniversary today. I’ll have a BIG giveaway coming up soon in appreciation, and I’ll be launching thereafterish’s namesake domain with a brand new website SOON! Yeay!

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Southern Belle…? Southern Drunk…? Asian in the South, drunk on life!

I couldn’t decide what to write about, and I ended up putting my thoughts for today’s article pretty much all up there in the title.

As we speak, all the yummy food we ate in the South gave me a bad case of Gastritis (acid reflux, sort of, but causes pain in the abdomen that won’t fart or belch out–trust me, I tried), and I’m been doped up on meds and flat out on my back in bed, praying the pulsating pain and chest tightness doesn’t come back. I only left the house to go to Urgent Care to find out what the heck this radiating, undulating pain in my chest has been. I kind of wish it had been adult asthma instead of Gastritis. How embarrassing. It’s basically a big, burning ball of gas hurting my esophagus. How sexy is that?

{Answer there: not at all.}

Anyway, you already saw what I look like super drunk and dancing at a wedding, but you didn’t get a good shot of the outfit… so here it is.

Details of the Arm Candy Bling

All of the arm candy I wore to the wedding were things that were either won through blog giveaways, or were gifted to me. #Truestory.

The bejeweled CZ antique style bracelet on my left arm was one of my wedding bracelets, gifted to me by my mother in law. The gold hammered filigree cuff is from Wendy Mink Jewelry that I wear pretty much on a daily, and which I won through a giveaway hosted by Sharon of Elisharon. The two adjustable gold bangles are repurposed and eco-stylin’ bangles by Alex and Ani, which I won through a giveaway from Charlie & Lee through my BFF Lily of Bleed for Fashion.

Don’t you just love free stuff?

House of Harlow 1960 gold antique-style key ring via Shopbop.

I’m not entirely sure this outfit was 100% wedding appropriate–I’ve never gone virtually strapless at a wedding before, nor so low cut. At least the skirt is mostly sheer-ish, rather than straight up see through, so that my “mini/maxi” skirt was really just a maxi skirt. I’m also rethinking sequins. While the look is absolutely stunning, and visually interesting, it is actually really, really uncomfortable. It chafes the arms, and since it was a tunic length… it chafed my nether-yaya region as well. Very Void of Win. #NotWinning. More like #DUHLosing.

5″ stilettos and drunken dance floor debauchery equals one sore footed Mae Lu. My heels didn’t survive the car ride home, and I kicked them off the moment we got my feet onto something carpeted. I was trying to find late night pizza delivery on the phone by calling Dominos Pizza while N snapped Outfit of the Day shots of me. I was too lazy to put back on my shoes and put the phone down, for fear someone would answer while I was acting all vain and what nots.

There didn’t end up being any pizza places that delivered after 1AM. ZERO POINTS on LATE NIGHT FOOD, ATL. We went to Kroger instead and bought microwaveable vegetarian organic ramen (who knew!) and organic vegetarian tamales. Not exactly a win-win sitch, but a lot healthier than Dominos.

I still think the overall effect of the outfit was pretty effective, and much more alluring than some of the other wedding outfits I’ve worn (ie., single dresses) before, and i’m so very in love with the high waisted sheer overlay maxi skirt that I want to wear it every day with Parisian graphic Ts and nude high wedges. EVERYDAY.

{ Are you wearing any maxis this spring? What would you wear to a spring/summer wedding? Would you get anywhere near as drunk as I did? :P }

{ Architecture of an Outfit/OOTD } Bows and Color For Her Waise Choice

Jen T of Her Waise Choice is a constant inspiration for me with her very sophisticated blend of high street fashion and upscale “professional chic” taste. With structured, mature pieces, incredible statement jewelry, and a bold infusion of vivid color blocking, this girl is such an up and coming talent, a formidable force on the Vancouver fashion scene. Not only is she absolutely refined, her enviable style sense is further enhanced by her very young age (22).

With a sweet demeanor that brings smiles to even this staunch grouch, Jen is the fetching example of how I would like to dress (and behave).

So yeah, once I swallow my jealousy, and down a mug [or five] of coffee so that Mae, Raging Bitchface of Death, transforms into Mae, Slightly Decent Human Being, I then get inspired by Jen’s power Femme Fatale vibe, and try to infuse color and more femininity into my daily sartorial choices.

Jen is a big fan of Zara, and since we don’t have Zara here in Detroit, the next best thing are the amazing skirt choices from Club Monaco and tops from H&M. Inspired by her wardrobe, I put together my feminine best and paired it with yellow for a small pop of color, a la HWC. The bows on my Vivienne Westwood Melissa shoes were an after thought, but also very reminiscent of some of the elements Jen puts into her stylings.

I found this gorgeous lace skirt at CM for a steal, so I snatched it up, because both lace and color are things I desperately need in my wardrobe. I probably have about… 16 pieces of Club Monaco in my closet, and they are some of the few items I get tons and tons of wear out of. Most of my clothing isn’t so heavily rotated.

Leave it to me to look confused, awkward, and as little feminine and demure as possible when posing.

Although this outfit is a bit more to the 4th point of my style square–Feminine With a Chip on its Shoulder style, it’s still essentially inspired by HWC while staying true to my more tomboyish, punky nature. The bold shoulder blazer, the very waist cinching belt, the single statement earring, the asinine poses: all Mae-isms.

{ Architecture of an Outfit/OOTD } Whippin’ round, striped girl dancing to the ground

Music, music in my soul. I dance, dance ’round, whip myself, grind, grind, grind into the ground.

Dancing used to be so much a part of my soul, that the mere idea of not dancing regularly for a long period, almost an era… an epoch that began from my move to Detroit, where, as I was unaware of at the time I moved, intense indoor smoking was unregulated. At first I thought, a little–or a lot–of smoke, lung tar, or what have you, wouldn’t stop a hardcore House music-head.

Except it did.

It’s not that I went to dance halls, dark lounges, and clubs for sport, to browse through the sweating, writhing masses for a future mate, or a wry, tawdry tousle between the sheets. It was all about the music. The melodic thrum, the beat thudding in syncopation with my heart, soothed my raging, angry brain, my restless, endless thoughts. I danced to sooth, smooth, move, flow. I danced for forgiveness. I danced for forgetfulness. I danced to celebrate… I danced to elevate my soul.

I haven’t danced the way I used to, like the floor was mine three nights a week. But things inside me have been stirring since I found myself last December. Though the pulse of anger still ripples through me now and then, it eventually fades to a sweet undulation of satisfaction and even a jubilant calm.

I might not dance again the way I could when I was a young thing of twenty two and twenty three, the way I moved seven years ago, with my hands in the air, and the flashing lights moving just for me. But in other ways, I’m more elevated than I ever was, and I only have higher to go.

{ Architecture of an Outfit/OOTD } Petite Fashion Challenge #6: Dress the Basics

This is my first PFC, and I’m a bit nervous!

Challenge: “Dress Up Your Basics”

Jeans and a tee is a classic outfit starter. Depending on what you layer over this basic pairing, you can change style and feel of the entire look. This is your chance to show your personality and your creativity.

I’m always all for comfort. Ergo, I live in T shirts when I’m not out and about. (And sometimes when I am out and about.) But, because I’ve been wearing suits and/or business cazh for the last 6-7 years, I’ve fallen out of practice with jeans. I hardly ever wear them now; I no longer know how to style them.

So when the Petite Fashion Challenge #6 of styling a basic T and jeans came up, it really was indeed a difficult one that redefined the word “challenge”.

I started off with the T and grey skinnies. I chose a plain striped top, because I don’t own many colored plain Ts, and I’m a huge fan of stripes (which, if you read on a reg, you will no doubt have noticed by now). Stripes add character without any effort. I went with grey skinnies because I’m tired of my regular distressed blue jeggings.

*Pardon the crappy quality of the photos… the flash on my Leica Lumix is pretty weak and bluish… So I had to tweak with natural light.*

{Basic Architecture: striped T, Club Monaco. Grey jeans, BDN – Urban Outfitters.}

I actually hate these jeans. I love the tightness–it’s a nice, comfy kind of tight, not binding or restrictive, with a bit of give. However, these jeans were made with someone with a different torso. The extreme low-rise makes for plumbers crack and muffin top. Low-rise also is not very flattering for petites, because we want to LENGTHEN our line… There’s also the issue of bunching at the ankle. An ankle length cropped skinny is perfect for shorties like me, but when I bought these I didn’t give two craps about bunching, and bought them with every intention of only wearing these with heels… well, you get my drift.

{Architecture 1: Diva About Town}

{Outfit Architecture: bold shoulder blazer, belt, Forever 21. Statement circle necklace, Causeway Mall. Suede Cuff boots, Aldo Shoes. Antique Key ring, House of Harlow 1960. Acrylic “resin” cocktail ring, J. Crew. Spike repurposed mix metal bangles, Alex and Ani, via Charlie & Lee. Gold “mens” watch, Target.}

I wanted to do a diva style and a comfy style. A diva will utilize everything she has to maximize an effect for an ensemble, creating accessories of things on her person. So I used red lipstick and tied my hair up in what I think has a kind of cheeky, feisty air. A slightly cropped bold shouldered blazer with a very nipped in waist not only gives the illusion of length with a slimming effect, it also has a spunky, in-your-face sort of feel. I added feather earrings, a weird gold statement bib-style necklace, a braided gold belt, mixed silver & gold bangles, my multi-finger key ring, a resin/acrylic cocktail ring (because, why not?), and cuffed boots to hide the jean bunching. I would’ve worn heels with it to further lengthen my lines, but it’s winter here, still (27F as we speak), and I would rather be warm than more stylish. Sue me.

{Architecture 2: Comfy Chunky Monkey}

{Outfit Architecture: dolman/bat wing cardigan, Norma Kamali organic. Infinity scarf, gift. Leather poppy flats, Born shoes.}

Fashion rules are all about proportion. If I’ve learned anything from Tim Gunn, it’s that we need to balance big, chunky textures and volume on top with more streamlined silhouette on the bottom and vice versa. So with skinnies and a tight T, I balanced out the stick-thin legs with a big, big, billowing sleeved dolman/bat wing organic cotton cardi and an even chunkier infinity scarf. The outfit is drawn together in the palette and the mutual volume of the pieces on top as counterpoint to the skinniness of my jeans. And the flats are just for comfort, honestly. I could’ve done without the thick cotton socks, but again, it’s really, really cold right now.

I if I could choose, I’d wear this with crazy leggings in a clashing print like leopard or zebra and the cuff boots, if I really wanted to be myself.

Did I pass?? Did I “make it work”?

{ Architecture of an Outfit/OOTD } Peppermint candy striper

I’ll be brief today.

You know what I love about peppermint? How it immediately refreshes your mouth with a small little sugary circle or a small strip of chewy, minty goodness. I also love that it mixes two very contrasting colors, white (or cream) and red. Two powerful hues: the color of innocence, purity and all things new, and the color of passion, courage, love, energy and vitality–a perfect combination.

Know what else I love? Mixing prints. I’m good at it. I do it often.

I also love, love, love red.

Yea. (Ever notice how people don’t know how to spell yea? They always spell it “yay.” — Because of overusage, the incorrect use has created the actual word “yay,” but I’m still arguing for the original spelling.)

{Outfit Architecture: Tulip skirt, disco necklace, stud strap bracelet, Forever21. Peppermint drape cardigan, Spotted Moth. Striped long sleeve T, H&M. Thigh socks, Target. Speckle bracelet, Old Navy. Cage strap heels in the style of Jeffrey Campbell, GoJane. Red lips, Laura Mercier Lipstain in Mulberry. }

I love us.

{ Architecture of an Outfit / OOTD } Get On Your Rubbers

(He likes watching us take photos.)

Baby, when it’s cold outside, and there’s inches and inches of snow outside (right now the snow is melting away, but it’s still there and icky), you sometimes must make a trade-off between chic and warm/dry. I thought I’d forever be bundling up in thick coats, looking like the Michelin Man in my puffer jacket and ugly-ass Timberland snow boots that make me look like the daughter of a Sherpa. That is, I thought so until I got my The North Face belted parka and remembered that Hunter Wellington boots are both waterproof and warm, and thereby all their more affordable knock-off sisters are thusly cozy as well! Before some of the craziest blizzards of Michigan February blew in with their sturm und drang, chaos and other general turmoil, I snagged a pair of rubbers from DSW.com and bought a pair of Steve Madden fleece boot liners, which keep my tooties toasty, whilst shielding me from having to purchase a pair of Uglies (Uggs).

(I still believe that, despite the vast array of abhorrent footwear out there, Uggs will always be epitomé of absolute lack of taste. I get that they’re comfy and warm, but they are ugly as fuck. If you want toasty warm and waterproof, get a pair of Merrill or North Face or Patagonia waterproof boots from REI.)

Harumph.

Anyway, another way to stay warm in winter while wearing skirts is to layer your tights. Wearing teal opaque tights under thick lace crocheted tights is just as warm, if not warmer, than work trousers, and you don’t have to worry about bunching or discomfort in the crotch due to long johns. Super easy, super chic. Wear two tanks, and a nice drapey sweater, and you’re good to go.

(I always feel silly when someone else takes my photo.)

Did I mention, these boots are awesome?

I highly recommend them.

PS. if your feet are small enough, you can buy Hunter Wellies at a fraction of the price by getting a pair in the Nordstrom kids’ shoes section. A boy’s size 4 is a woman’s size 6 or 6.5, size 6 is a women’s size 8, and they offer them in sizes 4, 5, and 6. Win.

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Cinch it up and put a bow on it

Work style. Worn sometime this winter… Outfit Architecture: Bow blouse & waist cinching belt, Forever 21. Striped long sleeve top, H&M. Wide Legged trousers, Victoria’s Secret. Lipstick: Revlon Raisin Rage.

This evening I was running errands, buying groceries, taking out our three week accumulation of recycling which had been crowding our severely overloaded utility closet–we’re talking OVERFLOWING here, to the point of using extra bags and containers to hold the overflow… And while I was listening to the Sunday evening broadcast of All Things Considered on National Public Radio, I heard several story snippets of beautiful, moving fiction. After the excerpts were read, they revealed they were part of a project NPR is running called Three Minute Fiction, and it gave me an idea to try something similar with some of my short stories. In particular, my favorite short story, “Constantine”. I don’t want to paste any of my stories online, because, well, I think I’m a pretty good writer (or I was when I was actively writing stories), and I fall victim to paranoia of stolen fiction, stolen words…

How brilliant is that, though? Three Minute Fiction.

It’s Flash Fiction, but for the ears, not for the eyes. Moving, entertaining, humorous, insightful, these little are gems of amazing writing, just long enough to bring us to tears, terror or trilling laughter during a stop at a red light. Immediate access to culture, to mind bogglingly good writing, several stories at a time, just in the course of a normal 10 minute drive! I love the idea of it.

I’m not big on pod casting. I tried a few Audblogs or verbal blog posts on my personal site a few years ago, and it was well received. Pod casting… that takes work. But a flash fiction here and there, I think, would be really, really cool. It would break up the monotony of beauty, style, and fashion stories, or perhaps give it a more fun spin.

I like the idea.

I’ve been drinking a lot of tea lately. Peppermint tea, Bed Time tea (Chamomile + Peppermint + other herbs). In addition to non-caffeinated teas, I’ve been pounding water. One warm cup with Airborne in it in the morning before I leave for work. 20 oz along with my coffee during the morning period before I leave for lunch around 2PM, and 20 more ounces between coming back from lunch and by the time I go home around 6PM. By the time I get home, I have consumed about 6-7 glasses of water, depending on how thirsty I am at work. Then when I’m home, I have a mug or two of tea before I go to bed around 1AM… I realized, all this water must be the reason my skin has been looking a lot more nourished, smooth and luminous!

I also took a look at the nutritional content of my Airborne and daily multivitamins, and there is an abundance of Vitamins A (wrinkles, skin tone, acne), C (skin tone, complexion, brightening), and E (firmness, wrinkles), as well as all the other beneficial vitamins and minerals. A couple of wonderful bloggers commented on how wonderful my skin looks lately, and I didn’t think anything was different, because I hadn’t been eating any differently, nor had I changed my makeup much. But I realized that all the water I’ve been drinking, in combination with my vitamin regimen, has really affected the quality of my skin!

Say "hi" to my Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 w/ Leica lens!

If I don’t have the right amount of water or tea in the day (tea also contains anti-aging antioxidants that help keep you hydrated and healthy), I feel off balance, slightly off kilter. There could be such a thing as too much of a good thing, but I keep in mind that whatever my body doesn’t need, it expels. I never try to drown my body by drinking more than 7-8 glasses of water and tea, and I found that after awhile, the frequency of having to evacuate my bladder dramatically decreases, as if the body acclimates to the intake of fluids pretty well. No, that’s exactly what it is.

I’ve been trying to stay properly hydrated for over two months now.

I’ve said it before, I’m not big on resolutions… I’m always trying to make new goals for myself as I go along. And this is one that has stuck.

Maybe that’s not what it is, but my skin looks great and I feel better now than I have in a long time. So I’m just going to keep doing this.

Do you have any recommendations for looking glowy and luminous and healthy?

I’m hosting a giftcard giveaway to my sponsor, makeup/beauty/haircare/skincare retailer Apothica and it’s sister site SkincareRx.com. The giveaway ends February 8. Go enter now! And tell your friends.

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Goofy is as Goofy Does

Here’s the thing: I’m a dork with short legs and no butt. When I find an outfit that makes me look like I have one, and longer legs, I rejoice!

So the story starts out all serious-like. The normal idle twittery…

Then it starts getting goofy… kind of.

Wow… these pants have a LOT of room!

Holy crap! An ass! Who put that there?

Dang… these pants work wonders.

Time to party!

Get crazayyy~!

Mission complete.

Certifiably crazy.

A story about a girl, her lipstick, and a journey with THAT pair of shoes

Let’s tell y’alls a story:

By now, most of you should be rather aware: I am indubitably quite the fan of red lips.

I went shopping last night and acquired two new lipsticks by Revlon, the irrefutable king of lipstick manufacturers. Acquired: deepest red wine colored Just Bitten lipstain called Midnight (I suppose because of its black cherry hue), and a deep but still true-ish red actually called Blackcherry. This brings my total collection of red lipsticks to 11 tubes, sticks, stains and pots.

{ Architecture of a Face/FOTD: Revlon Raisin Rage Super Lustrous lipstick layered under Yves Saint Laurent Rouge in 117. }

Some people may think this is incredibly excessive, but being under the count of 20, I think it’s a perfectly acceptable number. I liken it to a shoe or accessory collection: A lipstick is to face as shoes are to outfit for social occasion. Though the shoes are all the same color, they are cut, patterned, and intended for different use and myriad looks, so it would be absolutely ignorant and limiting to call all the many unique shapes simply “black shoes.” Likewise, a collection of red lipsticks is not just “lipstick in a red color” but a wardrobe that suits different occasions and attitudes. Each hue has its own special shade and formulation. Some are moisturizing and lustrous, others are matte and deep and sticky, others are stains, some are saturated lacquers. Some are brick, maroon-y reds. Some are brighter, truer reds. Some have a slight, yet, deep bluish hint to it. You wear what is appropriate to address the occasion or attitude you wish to don.

One thing can be said of them, however: They have undeniable power to change my face completely from bare and teetering on the precipice of lethargic, half consciousness, to alert, flushed and awake.

I started falling toying with red lipstick about 7 years ago (age 22), and dabbling led to a full-on obsession to find the perfect shade. Eventually, I settled on these 11. And I can’t think of being apart from them. They are the single most powerful item in my wardrobe.

Never deprive a girl of her red lipstick. Utter folly lies down that path.

Which brings me to another item with which I have been absolutely entranced/obsessed to the point of depression and unmitigated suffering, to indescribable delight:

{ The Jeffrey Campbell Camp cage platform sandals }

Though only a fraction of the frenzy caused by the JC Litas today, the JC Camp cage heels were kind of A Thing when they came out in early 2008. Back then JC was nowhere near as popular as he is today, and was much, much more affordable, which really, really worked out for girls like me, who, despite being a working stiff, could never afford the Proenza Schouler originals. For example, the JC Camp was sold in 2 colors on Nordstrom.com for $79.99. Then it sold out. About 6 months later, it was sold on Urban for $149.99. I snatched up a pair, having lusted after them for all of both the spring and summer.

When an irregularity with the billing system caused an error in my online order, resulting in my inability to purchase the Camps, I called Urban’s customer service in a panic. The rep let me know I was about to buy only one of two left in my size (6.5) and I was lucky I was getting them. They had sold out of most of their stock in just a few days time.

That began my unhealthy obsession with these shoes. Insanely comfortable, and still deathly chic with socks and stockings into the deep fall that descended on Detroit that year, I wore them everywhere until snow prevented it. That was the year I started wearing boots to work and then changing into heels once I arrived in my cubicle, wearing skirts with 2 pairs of tights and thigh high or knee high socks just so I could wear sandals in winter. Because of my insatiable sense of vanity, I changed my habits. Enduring to this day, I wear snow boots or sneakers to the office, or flats in the summer, and change to heels once I arrive at my desk. All because of these sweet Camps.

Fast forward to my San Diego Bachelorette party in May 2009. It’s 1AM. We’re at our third venue. I’m drunk beyond all coherent thought, to the point that my memories to this day have me convinced I have the power to teleport:

I remember being on one side of the table we occupied at the club; then suddenly on the other, dancing with my brother (read: NEAR, you perverts); then suddenly I’m across the room, dancing in the middle of a cypher, HARD; I’m near the bathroom, escorting my sister in law out of the men’s loos; I’m at the foyer, trying to convince someone to complete a goal on the giant cardboard list around my neck; I’m walking to the car, proclaiming to the world to hear that I threw up twice; then I’m home. Home, I’m finally coherent, sobering slowly. I take off my shoes only to realize one of the wooden soles has splintered completely in half, the two ends dangling when not pushed together by the pressure created by my foot arch.

Imagine my abject misery at this discovery!

I cried when I got home to Detroit. No shoe cobbler would fix these battered, split wooden soles. And by then it was a year after the Camps were first released, and were no longer sold online ANYWHERE.

1 year of searching for suitable strappy, comfortable, unique looking replacements resulted in only milquetoast substitutes. Eventually I bought these strappy babies from River Island through a special friend in the UK who got them for me (River Island does not ship Stateside), and was so delighted with them, I gave up my apparently fruitless and desperate mission to find Camp-like strappy shoes.

About a month ago, I found knock offs of the JC knock offs in an unnamed place, for a quarter of the price. So I snatched them up. They are nowhere near as comfy as the JC’s. They’re ill-fitting in certain places, the straps have irregularities, and the heel is higher, but they look almost identical to the original shoes. With a bit of modification, they could be absolutely the same shoe. I’m insanely happy I finally replaced the original shoe. The magic (ie., comfort) of the first somewhat diminished in the second form, I’m still quite pleased my journey with the Camps is at an end now that, after a fashion, I have them again.

What is old is new again. Fashions come and go, and return. If you love something, and you set it free, if it returns to you, it was truly destiny. Tenacity pays off. Patience is a virtue that will be rewarded. Bladity blah blah blah. Whatever. There are innumerable platitudes to apply to this story. The end game for me is that I got what I wanted. And, though it took over a year and a half, I have to tell you that, no matter the issue, a woman cannot be separated from a beloved pair of shoes.

*pardon the ill-fitting paring with the pants. I was just too enthralled with having the shoes I neglected to change. I didn’t actually wear the shoes with the outfit. I wore my Dolce Vita Aprils, which are more suitable a cut for these pants with socks.*

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Gratuitous Ruffles Without Ridges

It’s been a very stressful couple of weeks, what with January First drawing seriously nigh, many businesses are looking to re-write their health insurance policies, which makes my office rather busy, and me extraordinarily stressed out.

Other than that I have barely anything to offer in terms of coherent thoughts, so I will just leave you with gratuitous outfit shots with the note that you should pay close attention to that necklace. Because it will be the star of its own article in a few days time.

Ruffles are always a thing every season. An iteration of the same feature in different colour palettes, in lighter or heavier textures and material, depending on the season. Kind of like how leopard rears itself several times a year in different forms, except girlier.

Me. Other than pants and tights and leggings and long johns under my trousers and long socks, I don’t give a shit about dressing seasonally. I wear this silk number year ’round. I wear jewel tones in summer and spring. I don’t have a specific season’s bag. Namely, because I don’t subscribe to current trends.

{ Outfit Architecture: Cardigan, J. Crew. Silk ruffle tank, Forever 21. Green tank, Target. High waist skinny trousers, H & M. Ruffle T Strap platform pumps, Jeffrey Campbell. Necklace, LuShae Jewelry. }

Even though I now refuse to shop at Forever 21, a good portion of my existing wardrobe is from that establishment, and though I choose to eschew “affordable” designer style, it makes absolutely no sense to donate a huge chunk of my wardrobe in the name of a cause.

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Walking on the Wild Side

I tend to stay away from animal prints or anything overly trendy, just because I abhor wearing anything that would dub me “trendy”. (As I have discussed in the past.) However, there is an undeniable appeal to the funk-it-up factor of adding neutral animal prints to your otherwise pretty boring outfit.

A slash of cheetah there, a hint of zebra peeking through a corporate button down, or a brazen display of leopard down the leg–all are good ways to infuse character into a profoundly normal ensemble.

Now, just because I generally steer clear of leopard or cheetah print doesn’t mean I never, ever wore it. My high school “home coming” dress was a low backed, tight leopard number in shiny velvet. But eventually, I thought it was too much of an animal trend statement, and slightly slutty, so I donated it to charity.

But even with me, miss-don’t-call-me-trendy, you can’t say “never.”

~~~
I wore variations of these outfits all weekend and for the last part of this week. When I wasn’t swaddled in crusty jammies for cleaning the house, running errands, or cooking dinner, I was wearing animal style. You’d probably be surprised to know: Most of the time, for me, comfort comes first. Luckily, this ensemble is darn comfy in addition to being fun.
{ Architecture of an Outfit } Brush that dirt/chip of your [bold] shoulder
Underneath this beautiful tweedy kimono style coat I snagged in Reykjavik, Iceland is another trend on whose bandwagon I totally jumped recently…
Bold Shoulders.
…I’m about two years late. Balmain was shouldering their big ass blazers down the runways back in Autumn 2008, and here I am only now picking up a toddler of a structured shoulder jacket from Forever 21. It’s small enough to not be an eye sore, and also small enough so that in a few years if the style does go out of style, it won’t be so pronounced that I’ll be egregiously out of date. It’s a blazer with character and it nips in my waist and makes it look like I have an ass. Sort of. (Not much can really do that, except for straight up Voldemort Magic, or something.)
The thing about fashion is that if a particular feature or style can prevail longer than two seasons, it becomes less of a current trend–and therefore no longer deemed “trendy”–and more of a longer lasting style statement. It is usually at that point where I adopt the style or further argue that I’m even more over it than ever. For as much as I love clothing in many shapes and forms, I love the idea of never being a trendwhore or being called “trendy” even more. In fact, when someone directs the word at me, I can literally feel my skin crawl.
It’s such a passé word that no longer applies when trying to define someone’s style because the implications of the word have gotten so broad.
It’s like calling me Asian. Sure, I’m Asian, but it’s pretty damn general. Okay…that’s a bad example.
It’s like calling a shoe a shoe. Well, what type of shoe? A heel or boot or sneaker or flat? Is it made of leather, patent? What colour is it? Strappy sandal or wedge? Stiletto or stacked heel? Winter or Spring/Summer? I mean, come on.
With the infinite intricacies and complexities that come together to create the deliciously gorgeous (or functional!) object, you define it by simply calling it a shoe? Poor usage of your words.
Calling someone trendy refers to only the vaguest elements of a person’s style, and doesn’t even describe or enumerate the very things that would paint that person as trendy.
Then there is the other thing… that I equate “trendy” with overly studded, overly liquid legging’d, orange tanorexic, hair teased, Paris Hilton-loving, Ed Hardy/Calf-legging/Ugg Boot wearing, tacky teen who thinks their accumulation of all that is unholy in the fashion world is “stylish.” I hope my description is enough. Like I said, makes my skin crawl.
If there is a take away from all of this rambling, it is that I hate being called trendy, and I hope you would never dare to call me that repugnant word.
