Architecture of an Outfit: Lazy Day Essentials: How to Get Away With Not Shaving Your Legs

Aloha, Lovecat,

Let’s face it, women are under pressure to always look good, either by society, media or even ourselves. And, in all honesty, it’s a lot of effing work, ain’t it? Who always has the energy to constantly have the perfectly coiffed and turned out hairstyle, flawless skin, glowing makeup and well-chosen clothes? And that’s just the surface stuff! What about the energy and time invested into the maintenance of it all? We have to treat our skin and aging concerns, tweeze those eyebrows, file and manicure those nails and shave those legs. Seriously, it’s a ton of work and, while it often has a great effect on our psyches, it can take a toll on us from the sheer amount of effort required.

Sometimes you just want to cut corners!

{Gold accents keep the look fresh and stylish.}

I’ll let you in on a little secret: I hate shaving my gams. I have a depilator, whose effects of hair removal can last for a good week to two weeks before hair regrowth, but the time to depilate is exponentially more consuming than a quick shave. But even shaving? I hate it. That extra 5-6 minutes in the shower is a lot of wasted water (even though I usually turn off the shower), time and energy trying to maintain my balance.

This is why you will catch me in a maxi dress, maxi skirt or leggings more often than shorts and shorter skirts. This is my secret to cutting my beauty corners and shortening time spent in the bathroom. I don’t shave my legs unless I have a pair of shorts or skirt I’m dying to wear or my family and I are going to the beach. The rest of the time, you’ll find me in leggings, jeans, or a maxi dress or skirt!

WHEW! That’s a huge load off my chest.

So, next time, when you’re pressed for time and energy, and you just want to forgo one of those stupid steps to getting your perfection on, just get back to the basics and put on some jeans or a maxi with a fantastic print. You’ll be glad you just shaved by! HAH!

Rock on, Lover!

Style Cravings: Luxury Lounge

After I discovered lux casual/lounge brand Emerson Fry, I decided my new mission is luxe lounge, luxe casual looks: things I can comfortably work and run errands in, but still look polished and chic. When I’m sore with a lupus attack, comfortable clothes are of the utmost importance, but I don’t want to look or feel like a slob, otherwise, I risk exacerbating my condition.

{ Lusting After: Luxury Casual }

Easy separates and comfy maxi dresses that I can get in and out of quickly when I’m sore. Things like that make a huge difference when you have inflamed hips or stabby knees or a spine that feels like a bat’s been taken to it. Any of my readers who suffer from arthritis, lupus, fibro, celiac, or whatever other Auto-Immune condition we have, will understand completely. When you’re going through a flare, you don’t want to look as cr*ppy as you feel, because that might make everything worse (mental affects physical and vice versa), but you also don’t want to don something super complicated to put on or something that will hurt, like jeggings or a super tight dress. You need something soft, with give and will be as comfortable as pajamas, but won’t make you look like a slob.

Hence, Luxury Cazh.

I’ve been loving wire headbands to create bunny ears. These are so circa end of year 2011, it’s not even funny. But I’m always, always late to the party, so who cares what was a passing trend here or in Asia however long ago? If I like it, I like it.

Do you ever feel that way?

Architecture of an Outfit: thereafterish. x Bleed For Fashion – Bestie Meet Up

When two separated friends finally unite. Lily of ‘Bleed For Fashion‘ x Mae of ‘thereafterish.’. Finally… this happened.

thereafterish. x bleed for fashion: bestie e-union.

Meet one of my best and dearest friends in the world, Lilyanne.

I’ve been known Lily for 3+ years through reading her blog ‘Bleed For Fashion‘. Over that time, we became friends–we bonded through long, heartfelt emails, tweet conversations and blog comments for the longest time. It wasn’t long, though, before we started video chatting late into the night on Skype. We had had standing plans to meet up two Christmases in a row while I visited my family in British Columbia, Canada, but the timing never worked where I could actually make it to Vancouver to see each other. Well, this past holiday, our e-union (as opposed to re-union) finally happened.

And it was like we picked up right where our last phone call left off. This is what you call happiness: realizing that the friendship you’ve built for years while separated by time and distance is exactly as wonderful in person as it is in digital. It’s the same feeling I felt upon the realization that my marriage to Husby (N) was just as wonderful as when we were dating and living together, but better, because we were just as happy, and nothing had changed or that nothing was “different” as everyone had sworn in ominous tones it would be.

A lot of bloggers may understand what I mean about having a mostly long-distance deep friendship. And a lot of other people (read: non-bloggers) may find it weird that I call someone I’ve only mostly known online my best friend. But honestly, most of my best friendships usually are “vetted,” honed and bonded this way: through letters and texts and long Twitter conversations. It’s these snippets of life I can save like a cookie fortune, tucked away in my memory banks and email archives and keepsake boxes, to look back on and savor or pull out when I’m feeling gloomy and in need of warmth.

Hell, I met N online and we’re still together, going strong, eight years later.

The types of friendships built on thousands of words and profound moments are the kinds that you can treasure. Though you lack physical experiences and activities together, you share a bond through the thoroughly getting to know one another, sharing the deepest parts of your heart and mind. It’s a bond of emotion, mutual respect and a type of unconditional passion (non-romantic) that you create together.

Love you, girl.

Hawaii Life: Epic Light on Koko Head at Golden Hour

Aloha Kakahiaka ~ Good morning, Lovecat! How’re you today?

I’m fabulous. Yesterday’s sunset was absolutely gorgeous. As I was coming home, Golden Hour was in full swing and hit Koko Head just so. The evening felt magical and full of promise, which I of course squandered by taking a long nap once we were done with our family walk.

“Winter” is weird here in Oahu. It can be completely hot and dry on one side of the island, and on the other, it’s 10 degrees colder, windy, blustery and raining off and on like crazy. Living on the side of the mountain makes the weather difference more punctuated as well. It can be about 5 degrees cooler and much wetter and windier in our neighborhood than in the neighborhoods out near the water. Hence, I hardly ever take outfit shots outside near my home.

I tried a few shoots on a couple of Family Walks before Christmas. It was an experience–my clothes whipping violently against my legs and my hair slashing my eyeballs.

Architecture of an Outfit / How to Mix Prints: Tea Time with Leopard and Stripes

How to Mix Prints with Stripes and Leopard… a cute vegetarian cafe and tea house… Christmas + French cottage decor? It’s my….

{ Architecture of an Outfit / How to Mix Prints: Leopard and Stripes Go Creigh at Venus Sophia Tea Room and Vegetarian Eatery }

Aloha, Lovecat! I was in Canada for 10 days during the winter break for an unexpected, last minute family holiday of sorts. When I say of sorts… well, it was a mixture of happiness and sadness, but I will expound more on that later when I have the fortitude for it. If you follow me on Instagram (@maeluu – add me!), you know what had happened.

Even though we were in town for an unexpected reason, we still tried to enjoy ourselves and get a decent, vegetarian-friendly bite to eat. Which is why we found ourselves at Venus Sophia Tea Room and Vegetarian Eatery. This delight was a visual and sensual morsel hidden in the midst of Chinese groceries, street stalls hocking random wares, touristy Chinese kitsch novelty stores and hipster boutiques–a kind of oasis in the heart of Victoria’s tiny little Chinatown.

The cutest cafe I’ve been to in awhile – and all vegetarian! Venus Sophia Vegetarian Café and Tea House, Victoria, BC

More on the café in the next post.

This is what I wore on our first full and decent day of non-harried travel. Creigh mixed prints with stripes and leopard. I probably could’ve done with a larger leopard print against the small stripes, but whatever. I’m OK with being busy and loud. It goes hand in hand with my personality. Though you’d probably be surprised at the outright, undisguised stares from the The North Face and Patagonia-clad Pacific Northwest hiker and camper types in the cafe and all along the streets. C’mon, Victoria’s a small down, but it’s got a decent amount of well-dressed people. You can’t tell me Mixing Prints is the weirdest thing you’ve seen, people. But whatever.

Architecture of an Outfit / How to Mix Prints: Stripes on Zebra

Afraid of clashing prints? Not sure how to wear mixed prints? Not a problem. Start conservatively. Same color family, same palette with one print more dominant than the other. Can’t go wrong.

[These photos make me look like a strangely forlorn girl... all the wistful expressions... it's just a pose. I swear I'm okay. :) ]

Architecture of an Outfit: How to Mix Prints – Striped Zebra Lonely Girl

thereafterish, OOTD, how to wear mixed prints, Zebra pencil skirt

How to Mix Prints: start out with the same color palette. Can’t go wrong with cream and black.

thereafterish, OOTD, how to wear mixed prints, Zebra pencil skirt

How to wear mixed prints: try stripes with zebra. It’ll keep people on their toes.

If you don’t think you can wear something, you’ll never have the courage or the poise to pull it off, so you have to walk out that door thinking you look fabulous and ignore the stares. And with mixed prints and statement jewelry,

people will stare. Make it worth their while!

The secret (for me) to mixing prints: making sure one print is more dominant than the other. The zebra is louder than the smaller stripes of the top, and they’re in a similar color palette, so they work together instead of against each other. If the stripes were too bold, it would fight with the zebra, creating disharmony overall. Same goes with more daring combinations of contrasting color prints, like stripes on stripes, stripes on chevron, polka dots on stripes or leopard on stripes (and yet more stripes on leopard); one print should be more dominant than the other so that one creates more of a textured background to the other.

thereafterish, OOTD, how to wear mixed prints, Zebra pencil skirt

If you’re crazy enough to do it, mixing prints isn’t hard. Just go effing do it.

Mix in statement jewelry for added visual interest. Like my go-to HRH Collection gold hardware necklace.

thereafterish, OOTD, how to wear mixed prints, Zebra pencil skirt

Just be crazy enough to mix prints. It’s not hard.

When it comes down to it, my love of mixing prints must stem from my own weirdness. I don’t like blending in, nor do I like the feeling of melting into a blasé norm, losing the unique, weird qualities of personality that distinguish me from your average person. Not that I disdain normal, I just prefer to think of myself as “different” and “strange”, it gives me the confidence to wake up, get through my day and somehow find satisfaction with all of it. If that makes me weird or garners stares, I’m okay with it.

It’s taken me a long time to learn how to like Mae for Mae. Now that I’m getting there, I don’t want to turn this journey on its head and turn back now.

Weirdness it is. Mixed prints, stupid canned blogger poses, over-the-top accessorizing and all that comes with it.

You’ve probably also seen this outfit here.

AOAO: Holiday Stripes // Merry Christmas!

{ Architecture of an Outfit / OOTD } Celebrate the Holidays in Stripes and Crumb Catcher Frills

OOTD, Butter by Nadia, Butter by Nadia Striped Crumb Catcher Dress, Asian Street Style

Merry Christmas, y’alls!

I wore this striped Butter by Nadia Lulu Dress with Crumb Catcher while traveling, but it was a holiday of a sort when surrounded by dear family members (and meeting new ones who feel like they’ve been in the family forever), and the cheer and mirth and unending, uproarious laughter that happens when you’re with loved ones. In the midst of a holiday filled with glitz, glam and shine, I protest that wearing stripes rather than donning sequins or glitter is much more eye-catching–especially when paired with electric blue tights instead of boring, traditional black. The lovely thing about stripes and a flouncy skirt is that they generously hide Holiday Muffin Top. The stripes camouflage nicely with an optical illusion that slims, and the volume of the skirt actually hides holiday bloat under the folds. Very cool, yeah?

OOTD, Butter by Nadia, Butter by Nadia Striped Crumb Catcher Dress, Asian Street Style

Pair the dress with amazing heels and an a-line dressy trench coat and a faux fur stole to arrive in style if you live in cold climates. If you, like me, live in a warm climate, ditch the tights for stand out dancing shoes, dangly earrings and a serious arm party of amazing bangles and baubles. Don’t worry about adorning your neckline, as anything other than something super plain would totally compete against a frilly crumb catcher neckline. Just keep your neck simple. The dress does most of the work anyway!

Dress easy. Breezy silhouettes for breezy, warm climates like San Diego. (Or Hawaii, or Singapore, or Hong Kong.;) Airiness is what makes this sheer, flowy tunic so perfect for dressing in cold places like Detroit. Its drape train gives it this transformative quality for layering. But when worn without winter outerwear, the light fabric becomes the chicest statement in warm climes without much effort at all. The cut of the blouse does all the work!

As is my tendency, I belted the tunic to look longer, taller and slimmer than I am with my Holiday Flab… this flowy thing hides a wealth of flaws, which is appropriate for the delicious food my mum’s been stuffing me with. Also, the belt and dark ankle bow leggings paired with these vampy clear stiletto sandals makes me look taller and more elongated from the hip. Good for petites like me.

As uzh, I finished off with way too many accessories, a huge purse, and a chain as a collar accessory.

Moving in to the Taro Cottage in Oahu, Hawaii has been a lot more work than I anticipated. The cleaning and reprinting alone could crush most people, as the people who used to live here were absolutely careless, possibly might’ve been swine. Not sure. All I know is that this place was “professionally cleaned” before we moved in, and yet I spent 2 house scrubbing years of cooking grease and dirt from our microwave and stove and vents. I’ve moved on to de-grime-ing the kitchen walls and drawers. I found years of dust bunnies, gecko poo and dead ants under the oven drawer and just about cried.

Then I breathed deep and said to myself, “calm, gratitude and happiness. You live in Hawaii. This is a lesson in patience and gratitude.”

It’s true. All the disgusting crud, red dirt and dead insects I have to scrape, scrub and wipe away are just symbols and signs that I live in the rain forest in paradise. A little elbow grease won’t kill me, and the result is a better house than the one we moved into. It’ll be a clean, pristine Lu family house.

Now if we could get some Internet up in this patch of paradise, that’s be nice. The only downside to living on an old tropical farm is that 3G effing sucks–when we even have a signal. Other than that, I’m happier than I’ve ever been in a long time.

I have all this: Blessings.

Like I said, this little complex period of moving in is just a lesson to appreciate the biggest miracle of my life. I’m in heaven. Is this allowed?

AOAO: YesStyle Peplum Stripe Top and Amazing Foyers in Placitas, New Mexico

OOTD Summary: Travel gear of YesStyle.com striped peplum top, H&M yellow tank, fine knit leggings, leopard print cotton scarf, Steve Madden buckle boots. Taken in the most amazing foyer ever at our friend S’s house in Placitas, New Mexico.

The foyer in our friend S’s sprawling “compound” (I call it that because, to me, the place was a freakin’ mansion!) is an architectural wonder, cavernous and inviting–and totally unused! So I decided it would be appropriate for an outfit architecture breakdown.

I love this YesStyle.com striped peplum top by Redopin (currently on sale!). Depending on how it’s worn, it could be good for petites or not. I think it’s important to balance it out with skinny bottoms… and if I had my choice, heels.

But if you’re traveling… again, go with basic, comfortable yet high impact outfits.

There’s nothing wrong with jersey, cotton or some type of breathable blend, but you want to keep everything as high impact as possible to refrain from straying into boring territory. Comfy leggings ensure ease when sitting in a vehicle for long periods. Boots with multiple buckles allow for style, but are supportive and easy to walk in. Cotton scarves in animal prints are magical and breathable, provide warmth, yet still looks totally stylish and chic.

And taking pictures in the most awe-inspiring hallway? Certainly doesn’t hurt.

And here’s Husby, I snuck an Outfit Architecture shot of him while he was checking work emails. HAH.

So cute. I think I’ll keep him for awhile. What do you think?

AOAO: TOMS Shoes, YesStyle Sweater, Shoulder Cut Outs, an Endless Glass Hall and an Orange Stair

Yet another Travel Style Outfit of the Day. If your trip involves lots of walking, you will need a lot of comfortable, easy essentials to make traveling a breeze. Use basics with an impact to set yourself apart from the milling throngs.

I am still in the midst of traveling, even though for the time being, we’re stationary. I’m still living out of a suitcase and toiletry bag, and the majority of our household is split between a shipping container traveling somewhere in the continent between Detroit and the West Coast and my mother-in-law’s basement and guest bedroom. So, with all the complexity surrounding this time of year, in addition to the move, I crave simplicity for everyday life. If I’m enveloped in simplicity, perhaps I can cleave to a shred of whatever normalcy remains.

Ergo, in conjunction with the need for speed in getting ready whilst traveling with a Husby who does not like being late anywhere… It’s absolutely paramount to dress for comfort and with ease. Simple cotton pieces like button-down shirts and tanks, and shoes that slip on and off become absolutely essential.

Basics need not be so basic, though. Cotton sweaters with cut out shoulders allow room to breathe, and the bat-wing-esque shape is unique and edgy. Leggings as pants are not as restrictive as jeans, and also allow for breathability and comfort if you’re doing lots of walking, or spending lots of time seated in a car. A classic button down is quick to put on, but in a sassy animal print, it goes from “blah” to “ooh” when paired with a clashing stripe print. Slip-on shoes seem old school, but get a makeover with a cheeky pop of neon yellow at the sole, and elevated to a more sophisticated level with a tweed-ish, herringbone-ish material. With the added bonus of the One for One Program, you can make sure a child in need has a comfortable and stylish pair of of shoes to protect their precious feet, too! Win. And of course, the bag. You need something easy to carry, but also big enough to carry camera, water, phone, makeup for touch-ups, etc.

These were my go-to pieces: stylish tweed slip-on shoes like these by TOMS, leggings as pants (sorry, Kristy @ Monochromachic and Khatu @ I am Khatu… don’t hate me!), the infamous YesStyle shoulder cut-outs sweater</a> (also seen in this Travel Style OOTD post), my favorite leopard print button down shirt and my new cognac leather handbag. These are all items I can slip into and out of quickly, but each with a nice detail that makes them unique enough to make me chicer than the run-of-the-mill sweatshirt-and-flipflops/Uggz tourists.
