Stylish Story (in pictures): The Vegas, un-drunk. Episode I.

As you probably read, we went to Las Vegas for personal reasons last week. But while we were there, we escaped obligations and managed to make it a couple’s get-away by going on as many dates as we could.

Brunch at La Creperie, one of my favorite eateries in Las Vegas, purely because they serve savory crepes.

Taking an afternoon drive out to the mountains, I was surprised (and also not really surprised at the same time) to see snow.

We only spent about an hour and a half in Red Rock Canyon one afternoon, but that was long enough to shoot several hundred photos.

I was transfixed by this tree for some reason.

I’ve come to the conclusion that my little Leica Panasonic Lumix LX5 takes pretty decent photos, despite being only a semi-manual camera. The flash could be a little less blue, though. It’s very, very blue, even with tint correction in Aperture, it’s still really blue.

We were also able to escape obligations to eat a very, very late dinner somewhere along the canals of The Venetian.

FOOD.

The Ladies’ Toilets in this restaurant: each toilet stall had its own gilded mirror and glass sink. You know a place is classy if there are full-service stalls in the washrooms. Like Saks 5th, but without the overt animal cruelty, and the unabashed snobbery floating about the hallways.

Ployy B. Blossom Bag looks amazing in this low light, doesn’t she?

The atrium in the “mall” in The Palazzo.

And the honest truth of it is, it’s easy to get away from personal obligations when you are staying in your own hotel, and away from the drunken bustle of the strip.

I’m hosting a giftcard giveaway to my sponsor, makeup/beauty/haircare/skincare retailer Apothica and it’s sister site SkincareRx.com. The giveaway ends February 8. Go enter now! And tell your friends.

A story in Monochroma~Chic: Kristy and Mae, thereafterish.

Finally met Kristy P of Monochromachic while I was up in Toronto to spend last weekend visiting my Sister and Brother-in-Law and their baby HB.

Kristy is every bit as bubbly, adorable and stylish as she is in her blog photos and various writings. She and her boyfriend CL are such a wonderfully energetic, lively couple. (I think they might get married, but the question never came up during our 2 hour lunch! :)

One thing I have been aching to do whenever I go to Toronto is to get myself some crepes. Despite being founded by the French, and having an overload of French names, there is little in the way of proper French eateries in Detroit without having to pay an arm and a leg that I do not happen to have. (Yes, financially speaking, I’m a paraplegic.) Kristy employed Yelp and found a really highly rated place that had such delectable things on the menu I had to order two crepes, with the loud disclaimer to Kristy and CL (and the husband), “I hope you don’t think I’m a pig, I am just very hungry!” (I’m little, but I can pack it away.)

N and I knew she picked the right place when the live musicians (how French!) started playing the theme to Mario Bros. 1, followed by the Zelda 1 world theme, after which solely our table clapped heartily!

When spending time with Blogger Friends in a big city, one has to take copious mental notes. And since you all so enjoy lists, I decided to give you mine from my purse journal:

On meeting Kristy:

  • Met with Kristy P of Monochromachic & boyfriend CL for lunch at Crepes A Gogo. Yum.
  • Never go to meet a Fashion Blogger without wearing the proper get up. (I totally stressed myself out with this. Kristy apparently just wore what she was wearing to study… and she looked AMAZING. I wish I looked that good for “just studying”.)
  • She has perfect bangs.
  • Her (and his, a bit) accent is really cute (Indonesian).
  • She is a very industrious, determined young woman: Going to school for Retail Buying certification, so she can work in fashion with her Finance degree. Also works full time. I’m not that ambitious.
  • So honored she actually broke away from studying to hang with N and me!
  • They have really good taste in food. Hello, crepes!
  • You know it’s the perfect place if it busts out some classic videogame tunes.
  • You know you’re a nerd if you recognize the tunes instantly, and clap when they’re done!
  • Seeing Kristy’s Traditional Pose is kind of epic.

On Toronto:

  • Pedestrian traffic in Toronto’s main shopping artery (Bloor) is worse than Chicago.
  • Torontans suck both suck at driving and are as agro as Detroiters. — YOU KNOW THAT BLINKER THING YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO USE WHEN YOU WANT TO SWITCH LANES, YOU F*CKER? YEAH, THAT. EFFING USE IT!
  • Toronto is big, but manageable and drivable, unlike Chicago or New York.
  • Asian superstores have the best Asian bread & bakeries.
  • Haven’t eaten it for about five years, so I have forgotten HOW MUCH I miss and love Taro bread.
  • Eating Taro Toast makes me miss living in California (only a little).

On being with family:

  • Cooked dinner for SIL and BIL.
  • Remarked mentally how nice it is to see them and hang out as grown ups, and interact with Baby HB without parents around. (They hog important interaction time.)
  • Holding, playing with, watching HB makes all bad thoughts flee. Looking into his face, seeing his smile, no cloud of a negative thought could float into my head.
  • almost makes me want a kid…
  • Hold on there, I said almost! I’m only twenty eight!
  • … Someday, 6-7-8 years from now.
  • … like my counselor said in her very Black Gospel Preacher way of speaking, “Thuhty fahve, thuhty six. That’s a good age for you.”
  • I love my counselor.
  • Probably gained 4-5 more pounds after eating our way through the weekend.
  • Good times.

My husband takes the worst photos of people, despite being an amazing photographer. I always have to yell “get the whole body, get the shoes!” to insure that he captures the entire outfit. I still don’t know if he did. I’m using Kristy’s photos here. :)

{ Outfit Architecture: Coat, Victoria’s Secret. Circle scarf, GoJane. Skirt, J. Crew. Tights, Socks, Target. Boots, Aldo. Leather tassel satchel, J. Crew. (not pictured: Forever 21 structured shoulder blazer, J. Crew tank.) }

And again, thanks, Kristy and CL, for coming out and spending time with us! It was so much fun. I can’t wait to see them again–they’re definitely my crepe dining partners of choice!
