Between my last outfit post, “80s to the max(i)” and this caged and strappy skanky wreck, I’m pretty much stuck in the 80s, it would seem.

But I don’t care how 80s-house-wife-tacky I get right now. My new life in paradise, combined with the daily spring/summer temperatures, and the fact that I only work part-time from home right now, affords me the freedom to dress however the heck I want. The normal prohibitive and conservative codes of dress for the office-type settings where I used to live pigeon-holed me into an unconscious style rut of office-casual, Office-Lady-Chic, to the point where I no longer knew how to dress for non-business environments.

Just wear jeans? Forget it. What do you mean I shouldn’t wear heels to this event? I can’t wear flats, they don’t look good on me and I don’t have any!

Now that I’m not constrained by a regular 8-6 Salaryman-type existence, I’m free to experiment with clothes and figure out who the heck I am again, style-wise. Maybe sleazy 80s house frau might be a new motif? I’m really thinking about it. It’s sure comfy, and I spend most of my free time cooking, doing laundry and cleaning this dusty, slightly grimy, damp house in the middle of the rainforest, anyway. Being an almost full-time house frau is just part of the territory when you live in a jungle. Ah, this is the life, yes/no? :)

Is your life a rich, slightly tacky tapestry, too?

Honi, me ke aloha ~ xo, with love,
Mae

AOAO: Simple is the New Black

Ever heard the expression, “The New Black“? If you read fashion blogs, fashion magazines or galavant in such circles socially–online and in real life, you’ve heard it a million times or so. But who’s counting? I am.

{ Architecture of an Outfit / OOTD } The New Black

Causeway Mall, empire Waist black dress, black is the new black
Causeway Mall, empire Waist black dress, black is the new black

I’m sick of the phrase. I’ve heard it more times than there are grains of sand on the white sandy beaches of Hawaii. No, I jest.

But honestly, hyperbole aside, each season some in the box editor or associate writer or blogger, writer or whoever, declares some item “the New Black”, heralding the item/color/trend as the newest, biggest, baddest thing to ever grace the planet in the History of Ever. Well, you know what? Everything you proclaim as being the Newest Greatest Thing is nowhere near as versatile as black or any other neutral. Black has always been around, and nothing makes it new, nor can any other item replace nude, white (or off white, in my case), grey, beige or navy. Neutrals are timeless, that is to say, beyond time, withstanding time, perpetual, constant, ageless, which means they are beyond value and irreplaceable.

Neutrals are chic grounding shades that pull together an outfit. They’re the simplest and most basic of tones, and are the most common in nature. Which makes them eternally perfect. Towering head and shoulders above the rest, black is the boldest and strongest.

Causeway Mall, empire Waist black dress, black is the new black

In scientific terms, black is the absence of light reflection, but rather the absorption of all frequencies of light. Black is therefore strongest color, because it absorbs (contains) all other colors. If you think about that symbolically, that makes black the kingpin of all colors, because it eats up every other color in the light spectrum. Um, so really, pink is NOT the new black, because black ate pink for breakfast and shat orange and leopard before eating teal and red for lunch.

Black is timeless (as are all neutrals), and it hides the sins that other colors can’t. BECAUSE IT ABSORBS THEM AND HIDES THEM WHERE THE SUN DON’T SHINE.

I like this dress. It’s simple. Not my best silhouette, but sometimes, keeping it easy with a pull-over dress is so refreshing. And it hides the muffin top. (If only it would hide my hair.)

AOAO – Causeway Mall Belted Waterfall Jacket & Circle Skirt

I’m in love with Chiffon. I’m in love with this belted chiffon waterfall blazer from Causeway Mall. Worn with this striped Circle Skirt and knock off of THOSE YSL cage boots (Cage Heels), it was pretty much an ensemble I didn’t mind showing here.

I don’t really have many words other than how much I love the chiffon/polyester waterfall blazer. I could just bow the belt tie in the back and let the thing drape. I could deal with it for sure. This is probably one of Causeway Mall‘s better pieces I’ve received. The shoulder pads were sewn in place, the thing is lined and there are no weird pieces of thread sticking out of any seams. Overall, I’m mostly satisfied with CWM’s items, pretty much on par with Forever21, except for the crazy shipping prices. But that’s because it’s a wholesaler from Hong Kong, and not a regular e-commerce clothing site… Anyway. I love the versatility of the blazer. It can be dressed down with leggings or jeans, worn with a pencil skirt or even a full circle skirt as I did here. It’s pretty day to night worthy. Professional, yet still playful. It can go either way. I think it works with chestless women as much as it does with chesty women like me (and bigger, too!)–it’s the belt.

Circle Skirt, Cage Heels I need a pedicure big time. Feet are nasty.

Worn with my Danny Roberts “Because I’m Addicted tank and INSANE knock offs of THOSE YSL cage booty heels that I scored at a street art fair for TWENTY ONE DOLLARES (YES, I *did*, y’all!)… pretty sweet, yet edgy look. I’m pretty pleased with it.

I just need my hair to cooperate with me. OH HAY, HURRR! WHY YOU NOT STRAIGHT?
Whatev.

And since I’m running out of things to say (who’d'a thought!), I’ll just leave you with a picture of the cutest dog in the history of ever (and if you disagree, well, you’re just effing wrong, and the Universe knows it! :) .

Outfit Architecture: What to Wear to the Theatre Bizarre Documentary Party

I attended a party at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, Michigan to celebrate the trailer release of the documentary about a local cultural phenomenon, Theatre Bizarre, as well as kick off the fund-raising efforts to fund film distribution of the movie.

One of my best friends, Sarah/Sillygrrl performed in the showcase with her aerial circus troupe, The Weird Sisters. Of course, I had to support my girl. Plus, the three women can effing FLY.

More on The Weird Sisters and Theatre Bizarre tomorrow. It’ll make you pee your pants.

Here’s what I wore. I likened it to a high class hooker outfit, while my husband dressed like a Yuppie from Cambridge (ie., plaid button down, pressed khaki shorts, and khaki, natural canvas Toms shoes).

When you go to the Circus, you gotta dress the part. Honestly… my husband and I were probably the most normally dressed there, amongst skanky fauns, Housewives from Hell, Hell fairies, industrial club kids and zombies. A 10 foot faun walked around the venue, towering above everyone, and banging on bongo drums to the beat of The Weird Sister’s accompaniment tracks. Only at a place like this is dressing for the occasion is art as much as that being exhibited on stage.

WATCH OUT FOR TOMORROW’S ARTICLE ABOUT the Theatre and the WEIRD SISTERS!

RE: GIVEAWAY– YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, I know! I need to get off my lazy ass and actually figure out who won the giveaway prizes… I will get there, but I’ve got TONS of entries to go through. I’ll keep you posted. Hopefully by this weekend?

{ Architecture of an Outfit/OOTD } Aesthetician Chic

I’m pretty sure the title says it all.

Recently, this is my lazy day uniform. Almost flats (but not quite! Perish the thought!), skinny or black trousers, dress shirt or striped T, and of course, the waist-cinching belt.

I imagine this is what I’ll look like (minus the ill-fitting glasses) once I am a full-fledged aesthetician. Something slightly clinical, still professional, hair out of the way but still cheeky and messy as per my usual, and altogether comfortable. Not exactly blog worthy, but most of what I wear on a daily isn’t fit to blog, anyway.

We’ll be living in Hawaii (fingers crossed) by the time I am ready to venture into the spa/salon/medical aesthetics industry, so the outfit will definitely have to tailor to Garden Paradise chic. Something sleeveless and airy. Lots of silks, silken/sateen cottons, gauze, ruffles, lace. And probably a lot fewer dark hues. Considering that I feel like I have just barely come to understand my style… in less than a year it will be re-written completely. Let’s hope I find a good job there!

{ Outfit Architecture: Striped dress shirt, Club Monaco. Muted gold circles bib necklace, Causeway Mall. Skinny ankle trousers, Body by Victoria [similar here and here]. Belt, Forever 21. Shoes, Bandolino (almost said, “Don’t know, pretty sure you don’t care.”). Glasses, Timberland. }

Has spring hit where you are? If so, can you please tell me how nice it is?

{ Architecture of an Outfit/OOTD } Ethereal Floating Gold

If you had to define the way I dress, it would be illustrated perfectly by a square.

  1. Office Lady
  2. Home-bound slob
  3. Sweet and feminine with a edgy chip on her shoulder
  4. Edgy with a twinge of girly

Basically, if you flip through a Korean Fashion magazine, you’d pretty much find three of the four aspects of my style (you know, sans the slob part).

Since you are probably well familiar with my Office Lady looks (that’s pretty all I dress for these days)… let me introduce you to the hardly seen “Sweetie with chip on her shoulder”.

When I was lunching with Sillygrrl for a B3 bestie date last week, I decided to throw on lace and ballet style leggings from Emami in some vain hope that Spring had hit, and I was dressing the part…’Cause you know, spring is always all about lace and bows, right? Yeah, it was like 37F and effing cold.

I don’t normally wear such sickly sweet clothing, even on my girliest of days, but I still love lace trends and I would wear it more if we lived in a place where it was warm more than just 5.5 months out of the year.

The moment we got outside the café, we noticed the incredible difference between the temperature from when we arrived, to just three hours later. The variance was palpable: about 10-12 degrees. The difference between light jacket and pea coat or wool coat… strappy sandals with tights or combat boots with wool socks.

In other words: a bitch.

I love Michigan, but let’s say this, I’m quite over winter… and in Michigan, winter likes to make a surprise encore performance several times over. Just when you think Spring has arrived, big, puffy, cotton-like flurries of snow blind the sky and create a semi-thick layer of ice that jams your car door shut, or melts into ugly, jagged icicles that hang low from pine trees and makes the sidewalks perilously slippery.

Thank Universe for golden sunsets. I guess there’s a little beauty for this time of year, albeit very, very slight.

Nude suede wedges, Dolce Vita (Jade) [buy here]. Gold jewelry, Alex & Ani bangles*, Wendy Mink hammered gold filigree cuff, House of Harlow 1960.}

{Are you ready for spring yet? How so? What are your spring Must Haves?}

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Goofy is as Goofy Does

Here’s the thing: I’m a dork with short legs and no butt. When I find an outfit that makes me look like I have one, and longer legs, I rejoice!

So the story starts out all serious-like. The normal idle twittery…

Then it starts getting goofy… kind of.

Wow… these pants have a LOT of room!

Holy crap! An ass! Who put that there?

Dang… these pants work wonders.

Time to party!

Get crazayyy~!

Mission complete.

Certifiably crazy.

Causeway Mall Review: Asian Wholesale Fashion

WARNING: PHOTO HEAVY POST

CausewayMall.com is an online wholesaler that specializes in the romantic, edgy and quirky trends of Japanese, Korean and Chinese ladies fashion.

What I noticed up front about Causeway Mall: Inventory, eye candy, and incredibly low prices.

There are literally hundreds of items to choose from in every category, and all of them are beyond cute. It took me hours going through each category. I pretty much adored about 75% of everything I saw. The other 25%, I will admit was not my style, but was still fashionable, and on trend with what I see a lot of girls sporting on fashion blogs or in Asian magazines. There are items that satisfy every style [I think] I sport: street casual, frilly feminine, romantic, laid-back comfort, trend-conscious Office Lady. As for the prices: unbelievably low. Being a wholesaler, the items are sold either in bulk with discounts, or by individual items to normal consumers like me.

After several hours, I finally chose:

  • Blue bat wing cotton sweater.
  • Black tank with romantic lace and embroidery collar.
  • Black cotton military inspired, pouf sleeve cropped jacket.
  • White floral lace mini-dress.
  • Black liquid patchwork leggings.
  • Black and gold color rings and ribbon necklace.
  • Silver twin hearts ring.
  • Gold bow & cherry crystal earrings.

Causeway Mall’s PR also sent me:

  • Emerald strappy cocktail dress.
  • Silver black oval gem and crystals necklace.

View more photos after the jump.

As advertised and modeled, the clothes are adorable and trendy, made of soft, good quality material. Each piece fit well for the most part, and was comfortable.

My favorite pieces are the lace dress, the bat wing sweater and the twin hearts ring. The dress fits me, about a size XS-SM (US Size 2), but if worn tightly could fit up to a US size M. The bat wing sweater is a slouchy, relaxed number, luxuriously soft and warm. The over sized bat wing shape is versatile and forgiving at the same time; I can wear it on normal days and on days I feel bloated and awful about myself. A size XS/S (US 0 – 2) could wear it as easily as a US L could (US 8-10). The twin hearts ring gave me a delightful surprise, too. Made of a silver alloy, not a silver tone metal, it doesn’t leave a nasty greenish, black stain on my finger when I wash my hands. I thought it would fit my index finger, but it runs pretty small. I estimate about a US ring size 4 or 4.5, which is smaller than the smallest ring size offered in most trendy fashion stores.

The rest of the collection were charming pieces I can incorporate easily into my wardrobe.

The emerald party dress is soft, swingy, and glamorous, with adjustable straps. The military jacket fit my shoulders perfectly, and accentuates my waist. The only thing is that the jacket may not fit anyone larger than I am, a US size 2. The black tank’s lace collar was fantastically constructed, and tank fit my body well, but it was really tight around my bust (I’m a 32C), making it shorter than how it was modeled in the picture.

Like the ring, items in the store are one size and are slightly smaller. A shopper has to be really aware of not only the measurements of the item she’s looking at, but her own body measurements as well. The site provides useful measurement of each piece of clothing in the item description, in centimeters, which could prove a bit tedious for US shoppers who want to know proper sizing. I have the tendency to shop a bit haphazardly, so some of the sizing issues I faced were a bit of a surprise. A shopper should be very conscious of the item’s dimensions so she doesn’t end up with a tight (or loose) fit.

Based on only my experience with these items, it feels like some of the clothes in the store are mostly marketed toward the petite and slimmer shopper, much like the Asian retail giant, Forever 21, whose clothes fit small. I will grant that there definitely are some large cuts and pieces, but you have to keep an eye on those measurements to know.

The necklaces I got are a bit chintzy. The silver crystal and black oval necklace was lovely, but the adjustment chain broke the second time I tried to wear it. The black ribbon and gold circles statement necklace is funky, but the pleather connecting the metal bib to the ribbon look like they were hastily cut. The corners are uneven and the two pieces are not symmetrical. That necklace has completely sold out already, however.

Lastly, A few of the clothes had seams where the reinforcing stitching had large threads peeking through the seam to the exterior. Once trimmed, however, the clothes are fine.

Over all, though, the quality of the clothes is quite good, especially compared with the extremely low prices. I’d say the quality of the clothes is on par with Forever 21, Steve and Barry’s and even YesStyle’s. Conversely, the prices are much less than Forever 21 and YesStyle charge, and about the same as Steve and Barry’s did before they went out of business. All three retailers have a few items here and there that fit strange, or had some seam or symmetry abnormalities here and there, but on the whole the quality is quite wearable.

The website itself unique compared to most other shopping experiences, because there is more than the single traditional way to shop. As with all e-shops, there is the usual categorical navigation. Straight forward. Tops, pants, skirts, accessories, yada, yada, yada. Quite standard. The fun part is that Causeway Mall makes it easier by separating out categories by Fashion Style. If a shopper knows her own style sense to a “T”, she can search for items that are “Elegant,” “Romantic,” “Vogue,” “Bohemia,” etc. (My personal favorite? “Cute Sweety.”)

My only other experience with shopping Asian fashion sites is YesStyle.com, which primarily goes the way of customary category style browsing, also separates everything out by brand. However, the majority of western shoppers, unfamiliar with Asian brands, would find this method incredibly time consuming and, perhaps, even confusing. In contrast, CausewayMall offers a solution to this problem by adding several other methods of searching for clothes: by clothing type (i.e., tunic, leggings, cardigan), by color, and by material. With five different methods of shopping, it’s truly easy to find what one’s looking for without a ton of time wasted with sifting.

The items I chose were shipped to me quickly. They took about 4 days to arrive. I should assume the customer service is pretty good, but my only experience is with Causeway Mall’s PR person, who was courteous and professional.

Over the last couple of days I went back through the site. I noticed they have added even more inventory. Hundreds of fall/winter clothes: faux fur vests, leopard leggings, boyfriend blazers. For me, draw of the inexpensive prices for cute, on-trend pieces is hard to deny. Bottom line: the clothes are attractive and fashionable, in line with styles I wear, and because the store is a wholesaler, the prices are unbeatable, and the site is easy to use. I’m quite sure I’ll shopping at CausewayMall.com again.
