Weekend Recap: Mau‘i No Ka Oi

Aloha Kakahiaka, Lovecat! It’s Hump Day! Yay!

Here is what my weekend looked like. WARNING: Picture Heavy. My weekend started on Thursday, since I had a mini-vacation planned for four days with my Mama-in-Law in town from Detroit.

Friday

  • Always over packed, always late and always over-dressed.
  • Went to Pukalani to find the Superette to buy some snacks for the BnB (we listen to Maui radio and wanted to go… such dorks), and spied one of the Godfathers of big wave tow surfing, Dave Kalama. (Google him. He’s a big deal in the surfing world… and in Hawaii.)
  • Hanging out and chilling at our BNB after dinner.

Saturday

  • 4AM wake up call for trying to catch sunrise from Hale‘akala, Maui’s large volcano, measuring at 10,000 feet above sea level (3,048m)
  • Sunrise fail. The summit was all socked in with clouds. We saw nothing. (Here is what Hale‘akala really looks like when you can at least see something. EPIC.)
  • After getting lost, a satisfying breakfast in Kula under coffee trees, serenaded by a local musician singing Hawaiian folk tunes on his acoustic and slide guitars. Epic.
  • Naps.
  • Road trip out to Iao Valley, hoping to get some good photos, but the valley was also wreathed in clouds and raining hard. The sacred area was still gorgeous, even in the mist and downpour.
  • Quick snack and coffee to warm up at Whole Foods where we ran into my bestie boo, Sharon and her hubby Eli(sha) by chance! Talk about good fortune! And yes, I can’t believe they dress this AMAZE for running errands, either!
  • Road trippin’ out to the west side of West Maui volcano to photograph mountains, sunset chase and catch dindin with Eli*Sharon.
  • Hammin for OOTD pics with Shar and Eli, while Husby and Mama got bored and waited in the car. LOL. Pictures to come from this “sesh” later.

Sunday

  • Mother’s Day Brunch at Market Fresh Bistro, complete with apple banana (Hawaiian banana) Nutella fritters for dessert. YUM.
  • Road trip on the hair-raising, winding and sometimes harrowing, Road to Hana (also seen here from our trip to Maui last year)
  • Lots of waterfalls gushing from rocks and rivers and swollen streams on the hair-pin Road to Hana… I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you some of these waterfalls terrified me–all the water and power? OMG.
  • Saw and felt the softest, pillowy black sand at Hana Bay Beach.
  • Dinner at Hana Ranch Restaurant… nothing to speak of.
  • Terrifying drive back to Makawao in the dark on the Road to Hana, which I did all on my own, no switching. *Pats self on back*
  • Chilling at home and then passing the heck out at 9PM.

{ Home… and welcome by the second worst traffic in the country. }

Monday

  • 3:45AM Wake up call to try to re-attempt another sunrise from Hale‘akala, given the clear and warm weather forecasts in Makawao and Kula.
  • Stuck behind a string of slow-driving idiot tourists all in Mustangs… we reached the summit, only for it to be wrapped in wet, super cold clouds, AGAIN!
  • Total fail.
  • Stuck behind slow-driving idiotic tourists who stopped in the middle of the road–with traffic behind them and bikers streaming past going down-mountain–to take a phone-pic of a rainbow. PULL OVER TO THE SIDE on the sanctioned shoulder, dummies! Don’t cause accidents, you morons! (I am so sorry to report, but they were my people: Asians! GOD, MUST YOU PERPETUATE THE STEREOTYPE?! Piss me off.)
  • Milquetoast breakfast a Kula Lodge Restaurant where there were literally two vegan options, Rice and Papaya. I had the pancakes and immediately regretted it. They were nice and fluffy and tasty, but I don’t eat dairy or eggs… total bad idea. My Mamasita reported that her french toast was so so. Not a recommendation, if you’re a vegan, or expect a gourmet experience.
  • BNB check out.
  • Airport to return car and fly back to O‘ahu. – Least interesting view from our window. We were stuck next to the engine and wing. We could see nothing from the plane. :(
  • Stuck in Honolulu traffic (second worst in the nation!) to pick up Bear from the kennel.
  • Dinner and then immediately went to bed, super exhausted!

Now I’m home, back to reality and already making a wish list for our next trip to Maui! I wish we could go SOON! We’re so lucky to have all these amazing places to see so close by! Thanks, Husby, for the amazing birthday/mother’s day getaway. Best present ever. <3

More detail of our trip later!

Travel Diary: Leg 5 – Phoenix, Arizona to San Diego, California

On Day Five of our road trip, we drove from Phoenix, Arizona with a smoking car (a torn CB Axle Boot) to San Diego, California, my childhood home. I made sure to capture our I-8 Arizona to San Diego Road Trip through the eyes of my trusty iPhone 4 and my Hipstamatic Camera App. So all the photos here are Hipstamatic iPhoneography.

Hipstamatic Road Trip Photos: Arizona to So Cal

On one of our stops, I almost came to tears to see my first view of Palm Trees in two and a half years. I almost came to tears again when I realized that this would be Max-the-Bear’s first time ever, seeing palm trees. I made sure to commemorate the moment.

A few hours later, tears threatened to fall from my eyes when we crossed the Arizona/California Border and there was no “Welcome to California” sign or Welcome Center to take a photo next to…However, they decided to recede back into their ducts when I saw the many signs telling me of the quickly dwindling miles between me and my beloved hometown of almost twenty years. Then I began to rejoice when I saw the foothills and mountains that are the gateway to San Diego county after the dry, stinky Imperial Valley. My heart beat faster and threatened to soar right out of my ribcage when I saw tall windmills waving hello at me from the mountain top wind farms of eastern San Diego County.

“Hello, Miss Mae, welcome back home!” they said as they waved quickly in the brisk early afternoon air.

It’s been good to be back in my city after so long. As you can probably imagine from my few days of not posting anything (and thereby suffering dramatic traffic loss), I’m having the time of my life, amidst the stress of the moving logistics, trying to set up our new life over in Hawaii and other things.

Here are my favorite shots from the trip that day.

AOAO: YesStyle Peplum Stripe Top and Amazing Foyers in Placitas, New Mexico

OOTD Summary: Travel gear of YesStyle.com striped peplum top, H&M yellow tank, fine knit leggings, leopard print cotton scarf, Steve Madden buckle boots. Taken in the most amazing foyer ever at our friend S’s house in Placitas, New Mexico.

OOTD, YesStyle Striped Peplum Top, Travel Style, Placitas New Mexico

The foyer in our friend S’s sprawling “compound” (I call it that because, to me, the place was a freakin’ mansion!) is an architectural wonder, cavernous and inviting–and totally unused! So I decided it would be appropriate for an outfit architecture breakdown.

I love this YesStyle.com striped peplum top by Redopin (currently on sale!). Depending on how it’s worn, it could be good for petites or not. I think it’s important to balance it out with skinny bottoms… and if I had my choice, heels.

But if you’re traveling… again, go with basic, comfortable yet high impact outfits.

There’s nothing wrong with jersey, cotton or some type of breathable blend, but you want to keep everything as high impact as possible to refrain from straying into boring territory. Comfy leggings ensure ease when sitting in a vehicle for long periods. Boots with multiple buckles allow for style, but are supportive and easy to walk in. Cotton scarves in animal prints are magical and breathable, provide warmth, yet still looks totally stylish and chic.

Travel Diary: Leg 4, Southwest Sight Seeing: Madrid and Santa Fe, New Mexico

The fourth leg of our trip landed us for two days in the Southwest, while we recharged at the home of our gracious friends S and J near Albuquerque, New Mexico. We ended up touring a weird hippie art town amongst the dust and ramshackle buildings of an old mining village called Madrid, taking an hour-long off-road detour through the mountains and seeing high desert snow, and then a quick walking tour of New Mexico’s capital, Santa Fe.

Travel Diary: Leg 2 & 3, Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Denver, Colorado to Albuquerque, New Mexico

Colorado Sunset, Sunset in Colorado, Travel, Sunset, Colorado Travel, Southwest Roadtrip

Midwest to Southwest Road Trip

On the second and third leg of our cross-country trek, we passed from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, west through all of Nebraska, then a bit southwest to southeast Denver, Colorado. That Iowa – Colorado trip took us about fifteen hours and was, by far, the most exhausting and excruciatingly boring portion of the trip, mostly done in the dark. In the pitch black of the plains, and on the straight line of an almost flat freeway, you get deliriously close to hallucinating from the utter boredom. Is that possible? Well, drive through Iowa and Nebraska in the dark. You’ll know exactly what I mean. By the time you hit the bovine urinal stench of all of eastern Colorado, you’ll be dizzy and seeing things.

Third leg on Monday morning (by this point all the days have run together), we wandered across the street from our hotel, which fortuitously happened to be a Whole Foods Market, and got rabbit friendly (read: vegan and vegetarian) lunch and spread out on the tables there, basking in the 55F / 12.7C sunny weather. Then from southern Denver we headed south through Colorado Springs into New Mexico and finally ended our sojourn at the abode of our friends S and J, a sprawling complex overlooking the tangerine, twinkling glow of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Here are some dramatic sky shots we took during these legs of the trip. Enjoy!

Travel Diary: road trip day 1, Michigan to Iowa

We left Detroit yesterday, and stayed the night in lovely Cedar Rapids. No, it was not as exciting as the movie, starring Ed Helms, but I did get to see my #1 soul mate, J, who lives here in Iowa. Imagine that, after meeting in San Diego all those years ago, most of the places we’d see each other again would be out of the way, or international locations! Munich, Victoria, Cedar Rapids… Funny how life works out.

Here are some photos from our day yesterday.

What’s in My Makeup Bag?

Want to know What’s in My Makeup Bag? I’ve shown you What’s in My Handbag and What’s in My Briefcase… so, last in the series remains a peek into my daily face of the day bag.

What’s in my makeup bag?

So we’ve established that I’m a terrible over-packer, as much as I lack sparcity and succinctness with my words. It would only be natural to assume I’m an over-packer when it comes to what I bring in my makeup bag for touch ups when I’m on the go.

What's in my makeup bag?, What's in my bag?
What's in my makeup bag?, What's in my bag?

From top row, left to right

Yes, that’s a lot of stuff. But as I stated earlier, I used to go from work to school, and my days could last from 7:45AM through 10:30PM–that’s 15 hours! I needed to have enough to touch up and always look fresh, alert and polished throughout the entire long day. Once I finished Uni, I still would spend 9-10 hours at the work place and not go home, so yes, I would travel with my entire house in my handbag.

Now that I’m “funemployed”, most days I carry my tinted lip balm, an eye enhancer (either my lash curler or another mascara), my SPF30 and eye drops and that’s it. Honestly, lately, I don’t give much of a crap how I look, as long as I look like I’m awake and alert and don’t look as if I just came back from a week-long bender.

This big teddy Bear[Dog] was watching me while I shot the entire series, silently judging me for being such a pack rat.

Regularly Architecture of an Outfit / OOTD posts will resume shortly… Remember, we’re still living out of suitcases and laundry baskets until we’re done moving and settled completely in Hawaii after the Holidaze. So pardon the messy room photos… we’re staying with family for the time-being. (We leave Michigan Saturday.)

Travel Diary: Cape Breton Day 5, Beach Walks, Farms and Sunsets

Our fifth day in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, my mum-in-law and I went touring around Port Hood, the little beach town we stayed in. We made sure to make our way down to a few beaches and take a bunch of photographs near the wharf, the ice arena and the old graveyard in the churchyard. After that we were picked up by my in-laws and we drove around while my nephew fell asleep. We visited the town of Mabou, hung out a the community center for a minute. Then we made our way to the Mabou fishing harbor where I was able to capture more dramatic, golden cliffs sloping epically into the crashing blue waves. Afterward, we unwound again on the deck and watched the brilliant Cape Breton Sunset while we sipped some cold ones and laughed talked until we couldn’t stay awake anymore.

Honestly, after having spent 20 years on the west coast, in Southern California, I still don’t think I’ve seen more beautiful sunsets than a Cape Breton Sunset as seen from Port Hood. There’s just something special about Nova Scotia.

Travel Diary: Cape Breton Day 4, The Cabot Trail

Our 4th day in Cape Breton was spent in epic experiences:

  • Visited the only single malt whisky distillery in North America, Glenora Distillery, where you could actually pour and bottle yourself some whisky
  • Drank my first 10 year single malt whisky, with a smooth Ice Wine finish
  • Listened and bounced to Gaelic music
  • Had my breath taken away over and over on the sweeping vistas and dramatic sea cliffs and emerald forests and winding roads on The Cabot Trail
  • Witnessed a gorgeous sunset over the sea
  • Spied a moose on the side of the road just eating at the shrubbery before she moseyed back into the trees

Again, the most gorgeous thing about traveling in Cape Breton was the grandeur of the breath-taking, dramatic scenery, like the sun-drenched, golden cliffs of the Cabot Trail, with its verdant green trees and sandy beaches and winding roads and numerous waterfalls. Or the Cape Breton Sunsets sinking into a cerulean sea. Or the picturesque little villages and inns like the one at Glenora Distillery where the hillside is dotted with stark white cottages poking through the forest canopy, overlooking the home of North America’s sole single malt whisky distillery. The wildlife like, Nova Scotia Moose, chilling on the side of the road, eating the shrubbery and waiting for carload after carload to snap a photo before stalking quietly back into the mountain forests. And of course, there’s our family.

I am already homesick for Cape Breton, and I was only there for 8 days. I guess I’m smitten.
