Beauty Review: Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick

Aloha, Beauty LoveCat,

Are you interested in the Revlon ColorStay offerings like the new Ultimate Suede lipstick line? Keep watching to see my thoughts on the matter. If you like Revlon Lipstick–some of the best lipsticks in the drugstore level of all time–you may want to watch the video.

Revlon claims that the ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipsticks give “both moisture and wear? This velvety soft formula with moisturizing shea butter and aloe is food proof and doesn’t quit. 20 Shades. Apply once and go.”

These Revlon Lipsticks retail for about $8.00USD at US drugstores and at any chemist or pharmacy or discount retailer internationally. In my opinion, they are not worth the money, despite being so inexpensive. They do not feel “suede-y”. Like other typical “longwear” lipsticks, they dry out your lips and are not ideal if you have cracks, lines or chapping on your lips. The formula sucks the moisture from your mouth and creates a sticky, tacky feel and the color starts to flake and scale a bit after about 5-10 minutes. And the formula is not ideally layered over or under lipbalm, as proper pigmentation is hard to get with a more emollient layer.

Here are some detail photos:

{Starting out fresh and looking nice when freshly applied.}

{After 15 minutes, starts to peel, scale, get dry and flaky.}

{Scales, close up. But at least my teeth look nice and white. :T }

They don’t live up to what they claim to do, so, other than the cute names like Fashionista, Couture, Socialite, Front Row and Muse, and nice looking colors, this iteration of the Revlon ColorStay family does not live up to the line or to the Revlon brand.

Final Grade: I give it a D. If it weren’t for the cute names, the product would get an F.

Remember: US drugstores like Walgreens, Longs, CVS and Rite Aid often have generous return policies, so make sure you ask if you can return an item if you tried it out and didn’t like it. In my experience, I have been able to return used makeup items with a receipt. Without a receipt, I’ve gotten store credit on a gift card.

Review: Snug Camisoles

Ever need a good slip or undergarment but end up going without one because it shows through your outfit? Snug Camisoles might be the answer to your problem.

Product Review: Snug Camisoles Bra Friendly Tank Slip

Aloha!

I have been dawdling and putting off doing this review for a couple months now because I reveal things about myself I don’t often feel comfortable showing to the public: My muffin top and side rolls. We all have things we’re insecure about. Despite being petite, and despite appearing slim, fit or whatever in my photos, I have the Post-Twenties Stomach Pouch and side rolls. I exercise a bit and I eat right (mostly vegan/vegetarian), but let’s face it, I sit at my desk all day for work, and I’m way too lazy to get my ass to the gym every night. So, yeah, I have Muffin Top. I hide it in most of my photos with the way I dress, but lately I’ve been too embarrassed to go to the beach in my bathing suit. I even bought a long-sleeved UV top for swimming (and kayaking and hiking) and I wear it to the beach and gym, too embarrassed by my flaws to show some skin.

:sigh:

I can’t believe I just unleashed all that insecurity on you guys!

But yeah. Slip review time! Bring on the rolls and muffin tops!

Snug Camisoles, Snug camisoles bra friendly tank slip, proper undergarments, how to wear a slip

A slip is one of the most essential undergarments a woman can own. This is an old fashioned style rule to keep.

One of the most important things for looking put-together and chic in your clothes are proper undergarments. They smooth down visible panty lines (AKA “VPL”) and bra lines and help clothes sit better on your body.

Slips seem so old fashioned or even out of fashion these days, but this is one fashion rule my mum taught me which I still swear by. They keep skirts from clinging to my legs when I wear tights, they help skirts and dresses fall better.

SNUG Camisoles does three types of slips, a camisole style, tube and a tank dress style. They’re made out of seamless Lycra material that molds to your body and doesn’t ride or slip. When I read this, I was pretty incredulous. I haven’t had a body-hugging dress that DIDN’T RIDE.

Snug Camisoles, Snug camisoles bra friendly tank slip, proper undergarments, how to wear a slip

The SNUG Tank Slip is a perfect layering piece. … Do you feel scandalized yet?

Since I got the Bra Friendly Tank Slip in June, I’ve worn it about 9 times. As SNUG said, it does not ride up. It does mold to my body (which is why I didn’t want to post pictures of myself in it). It is very comfortable, and works well under all my pieces, sheer and opaque. When I wore it with tights, it didn’t catch like static the way lots of materials do against nylon tights. And when I wore it with tighter dresses, it hid my bra and panty lines perfectly. Sometimes I love it so much, I just wear it as a skirt under a button down shirt and go out for the day.

Here’s what SNUG says the Bra Friendly Tank Slip is supposed to do:

  • Reinforces your belly
  • Molds to your body
  • Hides your bra line
  • Super comfy
  • Perfect for layering and transparent tops
  • Hides your “muffin-top” line
  • Hides protruding belly buttons
  • GREAT for expecting mothers

It checks off all the marks for me, except for the last two. However, since all the pieces are made out of a nice breathable, stretchy fabric in one size fits all, I would assume the slip will work just fine for me when we finally decide to add to the world’s growing population problem. Heh.

Snug Camisoles, Snug camisoles bra friendly tank slip, proper undergarments, how to wear a slip

The only downside: Too roomy in the straps. (Yes, I’m sucking in my gut. *insecure*)

The only gripe I have with it are the straps on the tank portion. They might be made for someone with a longer torso, because the straps have a lot of room and pucker a bit, requiring me to pull the hem of the slip down so the straps sit tight and flush against my shoulders.

Other than that, I love everything about it and would recommend it to any one as an essential undergarment.

From the side.

The SNUG Bra Friendly Tank Slip comes in four colors: White, Black, Nude and Ivory. Their most popular item, their namesake SNUG Camisole, comes in 53 different colors. Tanks run about $30 USD and slips are $40-44USD.

This is how I wore the slip (as a layering dress), but you can see a full outfit post this weekend. As you can see, the shape of my bra is completely hidden and my underlayer is seamless under the tunic.

Mahalo! Have a bliss-filled weekend.

The Universally Perfect Red Lipstick: Ruby Woo, MAC

As you know, I am obsessed with red lipstick. (I currently have about 14 tubes, glosses and pots of the stuff in my makeup drawer.) I AM ALWAYS on the look out for the perfect red lipstick! It’s always a hard thing to find the universal red lipstick: a red lip color for Asian skin, red lip color for olive skin tones, that also works well for pale skin and African-American complexions.

Considering that I have one of the hardest skin tones to shop for (medium brown with very golden yellow undertone–not exactly olive, but not exactly traditional “Asian” skin color either), most of the beauty column advice about brick reds for olive tones and yellows and blue reds for pink or beige complected beauties does not apply to me. I’m not olive or too tan, but I’m not light-skinned yellow, either, and I’m SO NOT beige. All the lipsticks I wear are either too bricky/orangey or too dark with a slight bluish undertone to it, which makes me ashy and sallow. It’s like, DAMN! makeup people, can’t you think of the million or so Southeast Asian women who just wanna look hot and kissable? A girl can’t get no satisfaction. Damn Europeans.

After logging thousands of hours in Sephora, Ulta and Nordstrom, swatching about a million shades, getting bad beauty advice and trying it myself for years and years, last Friday I ran into Stacey a NARS Makeup Artist. Um, she’s magic. She found my perfect red in less than twenty minutes. WHAT!

universally flattering red lipstick, red lipstick for asian skin, perfect red lipstick for olive skin, red lipstick for asians

{Mac Ruby Woo, the universally perfect red lipstick for every skin tone.}

According to Real Beauty.com, the most universally flattering shade of red lipstick is Ruby Woo. These girls didn’t mess around. They tested and vetted hundreds of lip colors, and had women of all colours and races try it on, and indeed! the shade IS flattering on every woman who wears it. Peep the slide show, it is the perfect red for all skin tones.

Asian Ruby Woo MAC red lipstick, Red Lipstick for Asians
Asian Ruby Woo MAC red lipstick, Red Lipstick for Asians

Review:
It’s a matte red in a long wearing formula. There’s no hint of blue or orange in the undertones. It’s just a perfect true red shade. The hue is absolutely brilliant and bold, so if you’re not used to it, you may need to blot it like crazy to get more of a stain. Or, to tone it down a notch, you can darken it by using a moisturizing brown eye or lip liner pencil and kind of create a gradient so the brightest pop is just at the center of the mouth. This effect also makes your lips appear more pouty and fuller. The long wearing formula is drying, though. So remember to moisturize your lips a bit with lip balm and again after. Or top the lippie with a moisturizing gloss. My preference is Burt’s Bee’s tinted lip balm in Red Dahlia. My lips are already too full for gloss, I’d look like a drag queen if I went glossy.

I’m relieved I found my HG (Holy Grail) red. But if I had to choose a close second, YSL’s Rouge Pur in Opium Red, but that’s been discontinued. And, at $14.50, I’ll just go to MAC every time. I’m usually anti-MAC, because I can never come out of there without looking like RuPaul, but I think their brushes and this lipstick can change my mind a little.

What’s your Holy Grail lip shade? Need help finding a good red for your skin tone? I can help!

A History of Song Lyrics That Aren’t, by CollectiveCadenza

While I love writing about fashion and beauty, life and style must always have a good soundtrack. So, enter a little review of a recent video which deserves a listen.

My good friend, Jane Lui, a quirky and awesomely talented indie singer-songwriter, and a group of similarly quirky musicians got together under the directive from popular viral-video director Joe Sabia to create the most brilliant video ever:

A historical medley exploring the most popular songs in recent memory that contain iconic lyrics that aren’t real words.

You can’t help but smile when you come to realize that all the non-word song snippets really are some of the most iconic songs of their respective eras! Things like shalalalalalala la la la la ti da and naaaa, na na na-na na na, na-na na na and Mmmbop! make you sit up and laugh–and maybe even sometimes cringe, especially in the case of the latter “lyric”!

Musicians Jane Lui (YouTube: LuieLand), bassist Michael T., and pianist Jonathan Batiste took Joe Sabia’s direction and banged out 26 songs in a boisterous and jolly review of 47 years of pop music. And–it only took them 90 minutes to learn and 4 takes to perfect.

Like I said, BRILLIANT.

Please support these fascinating and talented artists by taking the time to visit their sites and give their music a spin. Their music is available via their respective sites.

Butter by Nadia Lulu Dress – Review

Awhile ago, I snagged a Butter by Nadia Lulu Dress on a flash sale. Luckily, I was able to grab the last signature stripe print dress. The dress is a one size fits all bubble hem dress with an empire waist, constructed of high quality jersey knit. It’s friggin’ adorable.

{ Architecture of an Outfit Details: 60s Stripe Lulu Dress, Butter by Nadia. [Alternative: Bold Stripe Dress, Modcloth.] Silence & Noise lace slip. [Alternative: Betsey Johnson Lace Slip.] Blue Opaque Tights. Black patent leather platform Mary Jane heels (similar). }

The Lulu Dress’s luxe cotton jersey and bold stripe print are gorgeous elements that make a unique and comfortable dress. The shoulder straps are convertible, allowing the dress to have a cap sleeve or off-the-shoulder style, but the sleeves could be twisted and worn halter style as well. The stand-out feature of the dress, though, is the unique crumb-catcher frill at the collar. Pulling from historical collar inspirations, a crumb catcher detail jazzes up a boring neckline with a cute and unique flare. The Lulu Dress’s crumb catcher falls forward, creating an adorable frill at the bustline, but it can be starched a little so that it stands straight.

Butter by Nadia Lulu Dress, 60s stripe, striped dress, butter by nadia

I love the way it fits my large-for-my-petite-frame bust, and how it falls to just the right, flattering length above my knees. The free sizing (OS – 0-12) is a bit misleading. It fits my size 2/3 body just right, if a bit tight around my C-cup chest. Though the jersey stretches, not sure how it would look on a size 10 or 12. I’m sure it would be cute, but I’m not willing to stretch out the material just to test a hypothesis. Butter by Nadia’s models are mostly buxom, curvaceous goddesses, so the theory might hold water. Basically, the dress looks good on me, so I’m a happy camper.

Here is another convertible piece, the Vanity Bustier, as seen on Elle (Fast Food & Fast Fashion). (I rue the day I discovered BBN through Elle. Color me obsessed now. Thank God I’m broke–no more temptation.)

BBN pieces are available in the Butter By Nadia online store or Prices of all Butter by Nadia pieces are upwards of $100USD – $200USD, with those in the lower price range pieces that are on clearance. Unfortunately, I snagged the last Lulu dress. But the rest of the collection is of comparable awesomeness.

What do you think of the dress?

Eco Style: Lamik Beauty Event, Detroit

Saturday I attended the Detroit debut of “the first eco-chic” cosmetic line, Lamik Beauty, during their Reveal Your Beauty Tour. Created and owned 100% by African Americans, the natural beauty line espouses the belief that beauty is revealed, not applied. Through this philosophy, the line is created with natural extracts and powerful anti-aging ingredients like green tea, vitamins c and e, aloe vera and avocado oil. The products are hypo-allergenic and non-comedogenic, lacking those nasty synthetic chemicals which clog pores and cause acne breakouts. The makeup is fragrance, paraben, talc, lead and poly(iso)butene free as well as cruelty free. Their motto is “do not sacrifice beauty for health,” and premier makeup artist Shalawn Willis firmly believes the makeup and skincare of Lamik can even improve the texture and quality of a woman’s skin.

The product collection has a range of oil-free, water-based full-coverage foundation in twelve yellow toned shades (therefore flattering to all complexions), six mineral powder foundations, and Brightening concealer in five shades. The catalog also contains a skincare line and a range of makeup brushes of natural, cruelty-free sable hair, as well as cheek, lip and eye shades. Their newest product is the Celebrity brow kit–a personal favorite.

Atlanta-based makeup artist Shalawn gave us the scoop on the products and gave a few of us a mini makeover while we all got to demo the products over mimosas and conversation. Her specialty (other than being downright awesome and sassy) is making over eyebrows. Mandy and I got the full brow treatment, and I felt like a siren for the first time in my life.

Typical of me, I started freaking out about the event a few days before hand and I sprouted an Olympus-Mons-sized pimple on my forehead that even my many, many foundations and concealers couldn’t disguise. Shalawn worked her magic on my goiter of a forehead, and it disappeared in a matter of seconds under her brush.

AOAO – Peter Pan Collar Nautical Stripe Backless ASOS.com Dress & Review

When I stumbled upon this open back nautical Peter Pan collar dress from ASOS on Valentine of Hello, It’s Valentine and again the same afternoon on Blair of Atlantic-Pacific, I fell in love immediately and could think of nothing else for a few days. The cropped overlay vest with the sweet peter pan collar opened up in the back like a seductive curtain, revealing the gentle, sensual small of a woman’s back. The fitted waist nipped in the narrowest part of the bodice, accentuating a woman’s natural s-line curves. The full skirt flared out, perfect for femmes like me with no behind, masking what was not there, mimicking a gorgeous, full hip. And the nautical stripe. Oh, oh, gorgeous things. I HAD to have it. But it was $80. Reasonable, but out of my budget for the month, as most of my free cash was already spoken for on things like glasses, hair cuts and gas. But it was all that occupied my mind.

After sitting on my laurels for three days, I stumbled back to the dress on ASOS.com only to find the dress had been sold out in my normal 2Petite size, and also the next size up! Dammit! This open backed, sweet little number had to be mine!

So I snagged it in a size 6Petite–four whole sizes bigger than I normally wear… I was so nervous, but I thought I could get it tailored.

When it arrived, I was totally surprised…

ASOS nautical open back peter pan collar dress
ASOS nautical open back peter pan collar dress

It fit! Mostly. The waist fit perfectly. Being large chested, I was relieved that it mostly fit. However, the width of the overlay vest is a bit big, so the shoulders pucker a bit.

I LOVE THIS DRESS.

Cons. The sizing IS TOTALLY wrong. Since the size 6Petite fit my waist perfectly, my normal size 2Petite would’ve been drastically small. The vest is about 1 or 2 sizes too large, even though I have a pretty large bust for a petite, slim girl, the vest still puckers at the shoulders and under the arms. I will definitely have to get it tailored. The size chart was absolutely off and misleading, because I still would’ve fit the 4Petite based on the measurements, and I’m pretty sure if I’d gotten the 4P, the waist would’ve choked my stomach until I had pains.

I hope this is an isolated event, but it’s enough to have me thinking of buying a size up the next time I purchase from ASOS.

THIS version is now sold out, but it does come in solid colors which are on sale for about $25USD. Solid color ASOS Peter Pan collar open back dress.

I love how the sheen of the nautical dress contrasts against the lush green backdrop of an abandoned house in Historic Indian Village in Detroit.

I wore this to an eco beauty event hosted by Love Publicity. More on that tomorrow.

have you ever bought something totally different than what you had intended and found that it fit your needs almost perfectly? Tell me about it!

Cruelty Free Beauty? Rimmel London Sexy Curves Mascara Review

My review of Rimmel London Mascaras: Sexy Curves Waterproof, Glam’Eyes Day to Night & Lash Accelerator.

In my endless mission for Cruelty-Free Beauty, I stumbled on what I thought was a cruelty free brand, because I didn’t see Rimmel London’s name listed on the numerous Beauty Without Cruelty lists, beauty journals and miscellaneous beauty sites. So, with minimal research, I jumped at the chance to try Rimmel’s Sexy Curves waterproof mascara, because I heard it was a Western “dupe” of the coveted Japanese brand Fairy Drops (buy @ YesStyle.com), with the trio of bristle “bulbs” mean to fan out and curl the lashes with ease. With this reported similarity, I was more than excited to give the mascara a test drive. I was disappointed to find out that Rimmel is NOT cruelty free by a long shot.

Watch the video for my grade and reactions.

Final grade: D-.

Note: Rimmel London is owned by Coty International, Inc, which is NOT a cruelty-free beauty brand.

It is important to note that most drugstore brands are not cruelty free.
From skin care to makeup to beauty tools, drugstore brands test most of their products–or product components–and chemicals for reactions on animals in a laboratory. A far higher number of department store brands are owned by companies who do not test on animals, either the final product or all components, materials and chemicals. I am not personally preaching for you to start endorsing only companies that are Cruelty Free, but if you are someone that wants to be conscious of her purchases, this is a lot of food for thought. If companies deem chemicals unsafe for human testing, why would we want to put those chemicals on our face? Beauty may be cheap, but it does come at a high price for precious non-human lives. [Note, to my knowledge, Revlon is one of the few drugstore brands that does not test on animals.]

For a comprehensive list of American companies that are cruelty-free and those which DO test on animals, visit PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and their informative page.

Derek Lam for eBay: Flowy Gorgeousness for the Masses, But Why the Duck Feet?

In a surprising move, Derek Lam announced last year that he would release a capsule collection exclusively through online auction power house eBay. Even more shocking was the revelation that the collection would be a complete collaboration between the consumers and the designer. The whole line with sixteen “candidate” designs debuted early this year on a dedicated eBay page, and would-be consumers would vote for their favorites. The top five designs would be released for purchase on eBay on May 10.

Furthering the democratization high fashion, Lam wanted to engage his audience and broaden the discussion of style and progression of his designs from art and historical inspiration to production. Each piece released will be accompanied by a video by Lam explaining his references and any narrative behind the design. This open source approach is the most innovative and left field method of disseminating high fashion to the consumer. Lam wanted the collection to be a direct discourse with the customers, as well as a way to break new ground for releasing wallet-friendly high design in a different, unique way.

Lam is not necessarily the first designer to embrace the growing influence of social media and the Web. However, he is the first to utilize this power to create a collection chosen by the end user. And it also happens to be more wallet friendly than his regular collections!

The range has flirty frocks and gorgeous long, flowing gowns. But in the promotional photos, Lam styled the playful frocks and elegant maxis with straw-soled patent flatforms. To debut such a beautiful collection, but pair them with something that reminds many of “duck feet syndrome”, to my mind only detracts from the overall refinement and polish.

I really do have to wonder if there is a huge inside joke amongst the designer and high fashion industry subset that we, the consuming public at large, aren’t in on. (I.e., Jeffrey Campbell Litas, their subsequent iterations, and flatforms.)

In spite of the detour of the shoes, the entire collection has a lovely, sophisticated feel to it. Priced at between $125-$295, that’s nothing to turn your nose up at (or your foot).

You can snag a dress of your very own May 10 on Derek Lam x eBay’s dedicated page.

{ Giveaway } Organic, Eco-fabulous Skincare Infused With the Benefit of Olives

Since becoming attuned to organic, natural or eco-friendly skin care by browsing the skin care aisle at Whole Foods and learning about other natural beauty products through people like my favorite beauty guru, celebrity Makeup Artist Lisa Eldridge, products by Dr. Perricone (PerriconeMD) have been on my radar for about a year now. I’ve been itching to try them, because I’ve read glowing reviews to the benefits derived from using their natural ingredients. Unfortunately, the price has kept me off because the products are about as pricy as you can get in the market today.

About a month ago I won a giveaway by Qin at the Disco for $150 to PerriconeMD, and I chose the Cold Plasma cream, noting its 10 point benefits. It’s meant to slow the signs of aging, brighten the skin, tighten, lift wrinkles, help with discoloration and tone. I’ve been using it off an on for the last month and haven’t seen new wrinkles deepen, and my skin feels nice. So I’ll give it good marks. The only thing I don’t like is the smell from the DMAE, the wonder ingredient derived from salmon. Because Dr. Perricone doesn’t believe in adding harsh, unnatural additives in his products, he doesn’t cover up the slight fishy scent with strong fragrances. It can be off-putting, but it wears off after a few minutes, especially if you put a hydrating serum on top of it.

Well, the Doctor has created a NEW lower priced line called SUPER with amazing green and natural products in amazingly designed packaging.

I’m aching to try the Hyper Hydrator: it has coconut oil for acne, which also balances and moisturizes the skin. I’m also interested in Superhero Body sculpting serum; through the benefits of olives, which tones, revitalizes the skin, and helps it retain moisture better.

I love the company’s commitment to natural skin care and eco-friendly manufacture: All Super products are free of: parabens, propylene glycol, mineral oil, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic dyes and fragrances. When possible, Super products may be free of silicones and PEGs. Super is cruelty-free and made in the USA. The packaging is mostly made from sustainable or recycled sources as well. Win.

{ Architecture of Beauty/FOTD } Ruby kisses, navy gravy eyes and Urban Decay Skyscraper Mascara Review

[in which the future Aesthetician posts about beauty]

And yet another red lippie look.

This will probably be the first time you’ll see my navy blue eye liner look up close.

An alternative to the traditional look of black kohl liner or black liquid/gel liner, navy blue pencil is a softer, more subtle, attenuated way to emphasize the eyes. It doesn’t have the almost invisible, earthy and natural effect of brown liner, but lacks the impacting, stark line of a black liner. Black liner is most unnatural and very strong on most lighter skin types, especially those without dark hair. So dark blue can be a way to get nice definition, without the in your face kind of look. This is a very muted, soft blue by Ulta. I think it’s so soft and wipsy of a color, because the pencil is sort of hard wax, and isn’t very pigmented. If I gave the pencils by Ulta a grade, it would be a c-, but I’m not about to throw away makeup based on that.

Here’s the look up close.

Of course, rocking the YSL Opium 131 red.

Now the main thing here I like is how “lashy” I am. I’m a big lashes girl. But I hate the look of fake lashes, because they can be done so badly, and I’m not particularly good at applying them. So I have to rely on good mascaras and good eye lash curlers.

However, being the total “granola hippie” I am, I decided not too long ago, that I need to uphold more ethical principals when it comes to makeup, and only purchase and support and endorse brands which are committed to refraining from testing on animals. That said, most of the makeup companies at the makeup counters and in drugstores do not uphold such ethical morals, which means my Holy Grail products that I rely on to help me remain on budget are no longer options. Items such as L’Oreal Double Extend, L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black, Maybelline lipsticks, Covergirl Lash Blast, etc., are no longer options for me.

Sadly, that means I am stuck with a paltry selection of brands that cater to my newfound cruelty free awareness.

Revlon, while not an animal tester, has always been a lipstick brand to me, and nothing more. I’ve never been particularly enraptured with their mascaras. So what does that leave? Department store makeup brands. And sadly, a lot of them do test on animals, though not to the extent that drugstore brands do. Chanel, Bobbi Brown, MAC, Nars (owner is Vegan), Origins, Smashbox, Dior, Stila, the Body Shop, Laura Mercier, Tarte and Urban Decay–just to name a few–do not test on animals.

In addition to needing a mascara to be cruelty free, I also need it to lengthen, define, separate, volumize, and hold a curl. I really do ask a lot. Not only does it have to be a roundhouse of mascara, but it has to be affordable.

That said, I am not about to dish out 24-28$ on a department store mascara… so when I stepped into Ulta and found Urban Decay’s Skyscraper Multi-Benefit Mascara for $20–a revolutionary product that claims it “lengthens, strengthens, thickens, brightens, separates, and curls”, with conditioning agents of vitamin E, panthenol (which gives the glossy shine of Pantene hair), and silk proteins–I had to snatch it up to try it.

I’ve tried it out, and I think it looks pretty lashy. It doesn’t clump MOST of the time, it doesn’t flake, it lasts all day, and it gives good length and volume. I’m kind of iffy so far on whether it holds a curl well. My lashes are very curl resistant.

It has an interesting brush that is larger near the end of the barrel, and has no tip. The bristles are very stiff, but not totally inflexible. And it deposits a nice amount of mascara onto the lashes without gooping or clumping. You do, however, be careful that the suction mechanism sucks off enough of the mascara off the brush, or else it will clump.

I like it a lot so far, but I think I need more time with it.

What do you think?

Final rating: 3.75/5 or a decent B-ish grade.

Essie “turqoise & caicos” nail lacquer review

{in which the future Aesthetician talks about Beauty things.}

Imagine a wind swept beach, white sand glinting golden in the rays of the setting sun. A thick tropical forest of flowering trees and fruit trees lines the edge of the beach. Succulent aromas of the growing fruit and flowers perfumes the gentle beach. The water, tranquil and clear laps the shore and spans out, brilliant aquamarine, a dazzling cerulean jewels. You lounge near the water, serene, drinking in the last of the warm light of a perfect day.

Now that you have this image of paradise and absolute serenity, transform this image into a color, bottle that color and sell it to a beauty brand. What you have there is “turquoise & caicos” (752) nail polish by Essie, a bright aqua color which reminds me of the warm waters of my favorite beach in Kauai, Hawaii.

Other than a sampler kit of the OPI Hong Kong collection a year ago, I have only ever used drugstore brand polishes, like those of Rimmel London and Sally Hansen, but have always bemoaned the inevitable letdown; they never lived up to what they claim in the polish titles. “10 Day Fast Dry No Chip” polishes crack, peel or chip within three or four days. “2 minute fast quick dry” smeared or got dented two hours later, or when I got in the shower five hours later and had to wash my hair. The only Essie product I have ever used is the “fill the gap” ridge filling base coat, which I felt performed at least 60% better than Sally Hansen base coats.

So when I saw my local Walgreens had gotten Essie nail lacquers in the entire color catalog, I pretty much decided to go for it. Considering that some of the more salon-quality (purportedly) versions of Sally Hansen polishes can run close to $6 without that much better staying power, paying $7.99 for a bottle of Essie wasn’t that much of a stretch. I grabbed the first color that reminded me of spring and summer, that pop of aqua amongst the deep blues and corals and baby pinks. I also reached for a deep blackish aubergine-y, plummy color called “devil’s advocate.”

Essie polishes are renown among beauty and style bloggers, but having never given it a fair shot myself, I had no idea how good they are.

{reaction}

The colors go on with a very crystalline finish, in other words, it’s very, very shiny–glasslike. Being a newer bottle, the formulation is pretty sheer. So instead of the normal two coats to get a nice opaque layer, you probably need three or four.

What floored me is the staying power. Most drugstore polishes I’ve tried usually start cracking (hairline fractures on the surface of the polish) within two days and chipping on the nail tips after two or three. By day four the polish is cracked off to the point of looking gnarly. Today is the fifth day I have the polish on (I did my nails on Sunday afternoon) and there are only two or three microscopic chips in the corners of a couple of nails, and a bit of wearing down on the nail tips. If I look closely in the light, the hairline fractures are there, but there’s only a handful, whereas a SH polish or Revlon or Rimmel would already have chipped off to show half my nail.

And the color. Not only does it remind me of a perfect beach in a garden paradise, it also reminds me of the glow of Mako in the Lifestream in Final Fantasy VII. Yes, it’s a video game reference, and the fact that a nail company had gotten the color exactly right inadvertently–that is to say, presumably without even knowing what the Mako Lifestream or Final Fantasy VII was–pleases me to no end.

I can only assume that most of the Essie top coats will prolong the color even more and probably prevent the tiny cracks from happening as fast as they did. However, getting a polish to last the better part of five days is a miracle for any non-gel, non-acrylic color to achieve, so I’m not complaining.

Over all, I’m pretty darn amazed with the Essie polish, moreover, I feel that it is a superior to the OPI polishes I bought last year, and astronomically better than the Sally Hansen “Salon Manicure” iterations.

I’ll give the dark polish a go next, and if that performs as well as turquoise & caicos did, I’m pretty much going to be a believer forever.

{Final Rating}: 4.75/5 (because getting a perfect should be a bit hard)

{What are your favorite polish brands and/or colors?}

{ Architecture of Beauty / FOTD } Revlon Super Pink to Save the Day

Awhile back, I got this SUPER DUPER PINK lipstick to make my day better. It is well advertised on this blog that I am a big fan and often-times wearer of scarlet lips. I often wear pink lipstick often enough, yet I have never, ever ventured into hot fuchsia or neon magenta side of the color family.

Makeup Products used:
Stila One Step Foundation in Medium
Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Concealer & Eyeshadow Primer
Tarte Eraser 4-in-1 Natural Concealer in Bisque
L’Oreal Wear Infinite Eyeshadow Quad in Desert Sunrise
Ulta Eyeshadow in Stardust (highlighter inner corners)
Benefit High Beam highlighter
NYX Jumbo Eye Shadow Pencil in white
NYX Slim Eyeliner in Brown
Tarte lights, camera, lashes! Natural Clinically Proven Mascara (volume & length)
Clinique High Impact Curling Mascara (Length + curl + water resistance)
Laura Mercier Lipstain in Mulberry as cheek stain
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fuchsia Fusion

Like red, fuchsia takes absolute cajones to pull off. An erect spine. Shoulders pulled back. Chin up. A ready grin. More so than red, this bold pink screams color; it enters the room before you do. Reds do demand attention, and thereby are demanding colors to wear, but reds can be subtle, like a fine mulled wine. Hot pink is like a double D rack under a cropped angora sweater.

In.
Your.
Face.

If you’re having a terrible day, it probably makes your face look 200% better. Hot pink is a happy color. Red, you can wear with a sullen expression. Or, you know, that whole goth thing. But try doing that with pink. Red can be vampiric, sultry, dark, sexy. Pink is a cyber punk, dancing hard, alone, to the music blasting out of her gigantic earphones. It’s a bouncy, lift-your-spirits type of color, and that’s the type of attitude it requires. Even if you don’t have it, if you swipe the color on, it can imbue that all over your face, instantly picking you up… at least to those around you. Who can hate that?

{ Review }

Revlon lipsticks are amazing. The Super Lustrous Line is just that, Lustrous. Great color payoff with high pigmentation. Streamlined packaging, unlike the lipsticks of yesteryear. Moondrops? Not only a silly name, ugly packaging! The formulation is matte, but moisturizing enough. I don’t have to glop on the Smith’s Rosebud Salve or Burt’s Bees balm like crazy when I remove my lipstick. It’s not so hydrating that it bleeds and feathers, either, so lip lining isn’t necessary. It lasts pretty much all day at the office. I hardly have to retouch, except for when I’ve drank about 7 glasses of water and 2 mugs of coffee. I love the longevity so much I’ve started using some of my dark reds as cheek stains, which also last pretty much all day.

I don’t know why some beauty gurus claim powders last longer than creams.

I love the Revlon Super Lustrous line. I have 2 reds: Black Cherry and Raisin Rage. I love them both. And I also have Fuchsia Fusion. These are all regulars on my face.

And, the best part is the price. It’s $6.99 USD. I die.

Happiness.

Last Minute Gift Idea: FOR HER: LuShae Jewelry

We have entered into the Twelve Days of Christmas, otherwise known as Last Minute Gift Shopping Scramble.

This is the time of year that gave me the idea to rename the end of the year holidays as “The Holidaze”, after the dead-eyed, exhausted, lassitude-laden stupor that comes with the extensive searching for the perfect gift for loved ones among the combed over remains at retailers; or the comatose, almost vegetative state we take on after having eaten too much of Aunt Bessie’s green bean casserole, or having taken that last piece of turkey, when we were already incredibly full; or for how quickly the holidays seem to pass by year after year, and soon enough we awaken from our Christmas, Kwanzaa or Chanukah trance only to find ourselves counting down the seconds to a new year in which we forget ourselves and write last year’s year on all our dates for two months straight.

Well, we’re in the final stretch now! The Holidaze has descended upon us!

Now is the time to become frenzied shoppers with Last Minute Stress!

But fear not. Online retailers are awesome, and do offer Next Day Air, so you can probably wait until the 22nd and be okay. But I wouldn’t wait THAT long if I were you.

Enter: LuShae Jewelry, a jewelry e-boutique that sells fine costume jewelry with a great selection of Promise Rings.

LuShae offers beautiful, high quality pendants with semi-precious stones on Rhodium & 14k gold, charming dangler earrings, and even fashion rings featuring elegant and intriguing designs.

The Promise Rings of white gold are made with high clarity CZ in gorgeous traditional and contemporary, fashion designs. If I weren’t already married, I wouldn’t mind  wearing one of sparkling babies.

The fashion rings and earrings are pretty awesome. There were a couple I really wanted (and still want), but my ring fingers are pretty small, and they don’t offer my size. However, they do offer a pretty wide range of standard sizes (5-10) in amazing designs. The pendants come in an array of styles, from the traditional drop style, to straight up blinged-out wonders. Here are my favorites

I chose this Orca Blue Topaz & 14k gold pendant with CZ pave stones on a 14k chain.

It looks just like it does on the site. I’ve never bought nicer jewelry online before, and was skeptical at first, thinking that it would perhaps be flimsy and kind of chintzy despite the prices and clearly stated materials. When it arrived, only days later, I opened up the box to find the pendant nestled on a bed of velvet. The stone glinted nicely, even under the garish fluorescent office lights. The pendant had a nice, solid heft to it, and the stone was cut well. The chain felt sturdy, superior, with a good sheen to it. Nothing in the features of the pendant could ever be labeled as “cheap”. On the contrary, everything about the pendant is of the best quality.

It would be safe to assume the rest of the selection from LuShae is only of the best quality!

Right now LuShae has a huge sale! Everything is 45% off. Regular Prices range from about $120 – $135 ish, but with 45% off, prices are about $67 – $77. For the holidays, LuShae is offering Free Shipping, worldwide! They even offer second day air.

For more information, to buy your last minute presents, or to get a promise ring for that special person, visit LuShae Jewelry. You can also follow them on Twitter via @LuShaeJewelry.
