A Song for Mama

Aloha, Lovecat,

Happy Mother’s Day to the Mothers, Soon-to-Be Mothers and Doggie Mommies out there who join us here in the world of thereafterish.! May your day be a delight and bring a pulse of happiness and a thrill of pleasure into your soul.

In honor of your day, Ladies, Gorjana, one of my favorite jewelry/accessory designers, is having a huge Mother’s Day Sale up to 30% off with the code “FORMOM.” Here are my picks: One, Two, Three, Four.

This is an oldie but a goodie. For my mum. I love you, even though you aren’t allowed to read this blog.

“Jaded Over Pantyhose”

When I was a little girl, I would look at my mummy and see her wearing panty hose underneath her pretty suits and dresses. She’s wear silk and satin and a billowing scarf would be tied in folds around her neck, afixed in some beautiful elaborate knot, or pinned down by a shining brooch. She’d adorn her neck with simple necklaces that would fall just so and would fall between her ample cleavage in a subtle way. She’d wear blouses and jackets with deep, plunging neck lines and curl her hair every day. I’d sometimes pull up her skirt while she was applying her make up and marvel at the lace on her slips and garters. She was sexy back then.

Makeupless, she was still beautiful. She had a simple beauty that was classic and subtle. Her face is wide for her small frame, with a high nose bridge (uncustomary with Pilipino faces) and large brown almond eyes. She also has thin arching brows that accent her eyes. Her lips are full and always pink, whether or not she has lipstick on. Her complexion is light. Almost golden undertones on a beige-y tanned skin. Being light, she was without question a great beauty in the Philippines in her younger days.

Even now, I still find her beautiful and wonder if I live in the shadows of her youth.

Her make up application process was nothing short of extraordinary, too.

The process would begin with a foundation base, which she would pour sparingly into the palm of her left hand and mix with several brushes and then finally apply. Then she would lighten the slightly darker skin under her eyes and around her nose. Then a dusting of powder. By this time, her skin was this even creamy tone that made her look different. Almost as if she were half chinese. I marveled at my China Doll Mummy. She’d pick several bottles and containers from her large box of pink and gold plastic containers–she swore by Mary Kay back then. Sticks and brushes of many different sizes jutted from random places in the box, and she’d gently tap my hand when I tried to play with them.

I found eye shadow to be fascinating. With just one stroke, one’s entire eye lid could become the sky, or a pearlescent shade of pink or mauve or taupe. She’s dip the sponge applicator into the pot of colour and then paint her eyelid different colours, depending on what she was wearing. It would darken or lighten her face, give her smoky, dramatic eyes, or playful, bouncy eyes. It was amazing. And then following that, she would take a pencil or a tube of something with a small little brush at the end of it, and line her eyes slowly. Moving her face close to the glass as possible, she would spend about 2 minutes to line each eye precisely, with the thinnest possible line she could manage to draw or paint. Then, grabbing another tube or something, she would open her mouth, gaping almost, and apply black goo to her lashes. She called it mascara. I didn’t know what it did. I tried to use it once on myself. I ended up with black marks all over my eyelids and burning goo in my eyes and I cried and it ran all over my face like black lacerations.

I thought I could be sexy like my mummy. No such luck.

She put blush on her cheeks. Sucking in her cheeks, she would apply the rouge where the sucked in areas accented her cheekbones, and then pulled the brush to her hair line.

And that was that. Sometimes she’d wear lip stick. Other times she wouldn’t.

Then, while I watched her panty hose move, she’s walk me to my room where she’d pick out my outfit and then dress me and then shuffle me back to her bathroom to do my hair.

But there were days I couldn’t watch her. I’d miss her panty hose. I’d miss the rustling sound of wind moving through the trees that they made as her skirt and slip would swish against them when she walked. I missed the strange smoothness of them when I’d sit at her feet clutching her legs when she was at her bathroom counter doing her hair or make up. I missed looking at her wishing I could be a pretty mummy who went to work and wore make up and panty hose and looked so grown up in her suits and jewelry.

Those days, my dad would make me breakfast, put my hair up in lop-sided braids, tell me to dress myself and then take me to school. I’d make him walk me to class, holding his hand and skipping as he walked, straight backed and tall (taller than me at the time, but nowadays he’s about 3 inches shorter than my 5’2″) in his 3 piece suits and silk patterned ties. He was great, but his suits didn’t make the whispering swish sound that mum’s skirts and panty hose made. Those panty hose were magical. She turned heads when she came into a room. People would smile as I walked around gripping her hand in mine. She was beautiful. It was definitely the panty hose.

But now, I think I know better.

I wake up early in the morning, put on a skirt and blouse and of course, don the panty hose. Sometimes with garters, sometimes fishnets, sometimes control top. I find them to be constricting and binding. They’re too tight, or they ride, or my garters fall, because I’m skinny and the garters are always made for bigger people and my hose pulls them down. They rip and tear easily. A klutz like me wasn’t made for heels+hose combinations as sometimes I step wrong or cross my legs awkwardly and my heels will catch in my hose and rip and run it. After which I am frantic to find clear nail polish to apply to the run to keep it from spreading. My poise is broken then, of course. My mum never seemed to have this problem. They run. They stretch. Sometimes I retire a pair and use them to tie up blankets that are being stored during unuse. If a sleeping bag’s bindings come loose and fall off, I use pantyhose to bind them.

At the end of the day, when I remove my dress shoes, they smell musty, with a day’s sweat lingering on them. It is more a relief to take them off than wear them. I get no little joy in removing a pair at the end of a hectic day. I throw them in the laundry basket with a lackluster that only belies my great happiness in being out of them.

I grew up and tried to see the world of beauty I saw as a child. My mum never complained about being grown up. She never threw a pair of hose into the laundry basket the way I do. But then again, she always worked in the evenings, and I didn’t see her until dinnertime. So I didn’t know. She probably didn’t see very much magic in a smelly pair of panty hose.

Now, neither do I.

It is she who was [and is] magic.

Architecture of an Outfit: Lazy Day Essentials: How to Get Away With Not Shaving Your Legs

Aloha, Lovecat,

Let’s face it, women are under pressure to always look good, either by society, media or even ourselves. And, in all honesty, it’s a lot of effing work, ain’t it? Who always has the energy to constantly have the perfectly coiffed and turned out hairstyle, flawless skin, glowing makeup and well-chosen clothes? And that’s just the surface stuff! What about the energy and time invested into the maintenance of it all? We have to treat our skin and aging concerns, tweeze those eyebrows, file and manicure those nails and shave those legs. Seriously, it’s a ton of work and, while it often has a great effect on our psyches, it can take a toll on us from the sheer amount of effort required.

Sometimes you just want to cut corners!

I’ll let you in on a little secret: I hate shaving my gams. I have a depilator, whose effects of hair removal can last for a good week to two weeks before hair regrowth, but the time to depilate is exponentially more consuming than a quick shave. But even shaving? I hate it. That extra 5-6 minutes in the shower is a lot of wasted water (even though I usually turn off the shower), time and energy trying to maintain my balance.

This is why you will catch me in a maxi dress, maxi skirt or leggings more often than shorts and shorter skirts. This is my secret to cutting my beauty corners and shortening time spent in the bathroom. I don’t shave my legs unless I have a pair of shorts or skirt I’m dying to wear or my family and I are going to the beach. The rest of the time, you’ll find me in leggings, jeans, or a maxi dress or skirt!

WHEW! That’s a huge load off my chest.

So, next time, when you’re pressed for time and energy, and you just want to forgo one of those stupid steps to getting your perfection on, just get back to the basics and put on some jeans or a maxi with a fantastic print. You’ll be glad you just shaved by! HAH!

What I Wore: Head Gear

Aloha, Lovecat? Howzit?

I’m going through an obsession phase with head gear.

thereafterish, ootd, what I wore, stylish head accessories, goddess headband

Head Gear Game: My new obsession with headbands is just a way to deal with the awkward grow-out length of my hair.

It’s the perfect way to combat that awkward grow-out phase of my hair where one side flips in and the other side flips out despite a blow out and product. It’s great to be able to pull it back and “hide” with a headband whilst I mull it over whether I go back under the shears or whether I allow the hair to grow out again. I’ve had long hair. But I’ve mostly had short hair since my senior year in high school. Should I grow it out again or try something edgy? MEDUNNO.

What say you?

What are your fashion obsessions lately?

Hawaii Life: Epic Light on Koko Head at Golden Hour

Aloha Kakahiaka ~ Good morning, Lovecat! How’re you today?

I’m fabulous. Yesterday’s sunset was absolutely gorgeous. As I was coming home, Golden Hour was in full swing and hit Koko Head just so. The evening felt magical and full of promise, which I of course squandered by taking a long nap once we were done with our family walk.

“Winter” is weird here in Oahu. It can be completely hot and dry on one side of the island, and on the other, it’s 10 degrees colder, windy, blustery and raining off and on like crazy. Living on the side of the mountain makes the weather difference more punctuated as well. It can be about 5 degrees cooler and much wetter and windier in our neighborhood than in the neighborhoods out near the water. Hence, I hardly ever take outfit shots outside near my home.

I tried a few shoots on a couple of Family Walks before Christmas. It was an experience–my clothes whipping violently against my legs and my hair slashing my eyeballs.

Architecture of an Outfit: Halfway Colorblocking

Aloha Kakahiaka, Lovecat! Election Season is over. I’m elated and relieved now that it’s concluded. Of course, I’m glad of the results, on the federal AND local levels, but more importantly, I’m so proud of my nation for taking its civic duty seriously. And in Hawaii, some interesting and difficult battles are concluded, and I hope my new officials will work toward the betterment of Hawaii as a state.

Yeay, Democracy. Now the hard part begins. I look forward to seeing how we can learn how to work together for the communal good of the country.

Moving on.

I know this doesn’t count as colorblocking in the traditional sense…

So I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I’m awful when it comes to colorblocking. (Link: also where you’ve seen this outfit before.) I own way too many neutrals and stripes, and too few colors, to be able to figure out colorblocking effectively. Can nautical count, please?

I went to the Aloha Tower Halloween Party, “Crazy, Sexy, Ghoul,” here in Honolulu on Friday night, recycling my costume from last year:

Proving such an expensive costume to put together, I plan on wearing it for several years, at least. Here are some detail photos of the costume:

After about 6 hours of wear, and constantly readjusting my veil and pulling it up and down to make sure I could see, my makeup wore off by the time I got home. I’ll make sure to re-do the makeup sometime this week and get better pictures.

But there are still eight more days before Halloween actually gets here. I don’t think I can do Lady Gaga White Rabbit two parties in a row on such a small Island…

Interviewer: “What is the scientific purpose of killing the shark?” Steve: “Revenge.”

I toyed around with the idea of going as a Team Zissou cadet to the next Halloween Party. But the sweat suit pieces are too hot to wear in Hawaii without sweating balls all night, especially at a raucous indoor venue. I just kept the red cap in case I can find a light blue cotton shirt and pants to use instead of trackies.

I’m also toying with the idea of putting together an ensemble of a Clockwork Orange droog. All I need are a white top, white pants (leggings), a bowler hat and a cane. Those are easy to find, and all pieces save for the cane would be wearable in everyday life after the spooky holiday has passed.

What are you wearing for Halloween? DO SHARE!

Architecture of an Outfit: How To Dress Your Flaws Strategically

Aloha, Lovecat!

In my last post, I reviewed the most awesome slip which would work for hiding muffin top, VPL and VBL (visible panty lines and visible bra lines) under most of your clothes.

Here is the rest of the outfit, which I wore with the slip as a layering piece. I tell you my sure-fire essentials for how to dress your flaws strategically.

Architecture of an Outfit: Dress your flaws – Sheer asymmetrical tunic, SNUG Camisole slip, blue tights and leopard wedge heels

thereafterish, OOTD, snug camisoles, asymmetrical tunic, HRH Collection, HRH Cuff Necklace, blue tights

Outfit of the Day: Asymmetrical tunic, SNUG Camisoles tank slip, serious gold neck candy by HRH Collection (www.shopwithhrh.com) and blue tights.

I said it in my last post, but I’ll say it again. I, more often than not, do not feel comfortable in my own skin. I’m plagued by insecurities about my body, my age, my appearance. Yes, I know, my petite stature and my ethnicity tell you I’m, like, 18. And, sure, my pictures make me look all vain or poised or confident or totally absorbed in the moment of posing, but pictures are under my control, and I only post what I’m happy with, or I don’t post at all. (You’ll notice, I often take a “leave of absence” from posting regularly here.) So a picture can fool a viewer/reader into thinking everything is all hunky-dory. Or it can make you think I’ve got it together. Or it can leave you with a slew of other thoughts about me I’d prefer not to think about.

Anyway, in any photo of me on this site, chances are I’m sucking it in or dressing in such a way that hides the imperfections I’m so keen to keep hidden.

The point is: It’s easy to hide things you hate about yourself to provide the appearance of grace, poise and put-togetherness if you have the right tools.

thereafterish, OOTD, snug camisoles, asymmetrical tunic, HRH Collection, HRH Cuff Necklace, blue tights

I love the flow of this tunic.

thereafterish, OOTD, HRH Collection, HRH Cuff Necklace, kate spade ooh lala necklace

Delicate + hardcore = balance. Just my kind of OTT type of accessorizing style.

Essential things for looking put together:

  1. Good posture
Nothing ruins a good outfit more than a slumped, hunched over back. [This is why I have to contend with thousands of fangirls out there that Mary-Kate Olsen is not the wunderkind of style everyone thinks she is. She schleps around with the most heinous posture. STAND UP STRAIGHT, MK, YOU OWN THE WORLD. Sheesh!] Standing up straight gives an air of confidence, grace, poise and a certain je ne sais quoi. It makes you wonder, “What’s her secret?”
  2. Confidence
If you don’t think you can pull off an outfit, you won’t be likely to walk out the door with it on. Or you’ll cower and hunch over when you’re walking (bad posture, see above), and it’ll make your outfit look droopy, a little worse for wear. If you think you can’t pull something off, you won’t. And it’ll be evident in the way you move, the way you walk–your body language will tell everyone everywhere that the outfit was too good for you, and that it is wearing you, not you wearing it (among other things). Make sense?
  3. A smile
Nothing says success and perfection and beauty and all-is-right-with-my-world-ness like a smile.
Audrey said, “The most pretty girls are happy ones,” and I can’t agree more. A smile conveys confidence, satisfaction and contentment with one’s life and sphere of life. If you’re happy with yourself, then you feel good. And that good feeling will communicate itself into every aspect of you-ness: from the clothes, to your posture, to your mindset, to your work, to your relationships. A very A+ thing.
  4. Good Undergarments
Vogue, Glamour and a host of other magazines always say it. Good underwear — a good bra, a good panty, Spanx, a slip — is the foundation of a good outfit.

We all have body issues. Sadly, Muffin Top happens to good people. In fact, Muffin Top happens to every body (mine included!). No body is perfect. You can think so, but even the most amazing star bloggers with perfect style and the perfect photographer boyfriend have strategic dressing styles and photoshop on their side to hide their flaws.

Hide side arm/sideboob flab with a bra that fits. Muffin top or pouche? Wear Spanx. Shape wear shirts hide back flab, arm flab, rolls. A good slip or camisole will disguise bra and panty lines and smooth down shirt tails under a tight skirt. I swear by slips–full and half.

  5. Know your body type
Dressing for your body shape will help you highlight your best features and hide your not so best. I can’t tell you what to do on that note, but watching What Not to Wear and consulting a ton of style guides out there can help guide you in the right direction for finding what fits your body, and then from there, what fits your style.

For more reading on hiding body flaws, I highly recommend this slideshow on Hiding your Body Flaws by Oprah Magazine. (Yes, REALLY.)

Feeling a bit silly and totally contrived in front of the camera – Husby’s shooting and making faces at me and saying, “Why don’t you pull those stupid ‘blogger poses’ you always do?” No faster way to feel dumb. :P

What else do I do to make it seem like I “got it together”? I just pile on accessories over simple, comfortable outfits, and add a pop of color. It makes me feel youthful, fun, free-spirited AND luxurious.

Even if I really feel silly, contrived or just flat out meh about my outfit, my body or whatever else is going on in my life, at least I won’t look like I am. And that, my friend, makes all the difference in the world.

Architecture of an Outfit: Catty Lazy Day Style

My “Lazy Day Uniform” OOTD, is synonymous with my fashion motto: “Low effort, high impact.” It involves items with a visual punch that don’t involve a lot of effort to wear. Leopard leggings, a neon bralette, the perfect red lipstick, crazy heels and edgy accessories like an fringe arm party.

thereafterish, ootd, Hawaii street style, leopard leggings, lazy day style, Asia Street Style Fashion

Lazy Day Dressing involves my go to chambray button down shirt and leopard leggings. High impact without any thought or effort at all.

Architecture of an Outfit / OOTD: Leopard Leggings, Chambray Denim Top, Neon Orange Bralette, The Perfect Red Lipstick and Fringe Arm Party

Go for a pop of color in the form of a bralette or bandeau. I found this for, like, $10 at a local boutique. Worn over a bra, since my girls are too big to go without support… ;) I consider my leopard leggings a neutral, even though they’re quite busy. And seasonless chambray is a great complement to any outfit any time of the year, providing nice and fashionable Sun Protection while I’m driving, and perfectly casual and nonchalant. A button down is the easiest thing to wear, and still provides a hint of sophistication and maturity at the office while being insanely comfortable.

thereafterish, ootd, Hawaii street style, leopard leggings, lazy day style, Asia Street Style Fashion

A peek of color in the form of a neon bandeau top – provides a nice contrast to an otherwise slightly neutral outfit.

Edgy details like mismatched earrings and fringe chain arm parties make the low effort of the outfit seem well-thought out.

Wear fringe without abandon if you think your outfit is pretty blasé. Fringe adds a kind of party element to an ensemble without even trying at all. It might be a little out of place at the office, but thankfully I have no dress code at mine. I wear fringe and red lipstick unapologetically.

thereafterish, ootd, Hawaii street style, fringe bangle, lazy day style, Asia Street Style Fashion

Increase the impact of the outfit with a high-impact, low effort makeup move: a bold red lip. I found the universally perfect red lipstick…

I swear by red lipstick any time of the year. A bright, bold lip can change your entire face, brightening it and changing the mood of your outfit. I wear Ruby Woo by MAC or Paprika by Nuance Beauty (sold at CVS/Longs stores). I believe Ruby Woo is the universally flattering red lipstick for all women of all complexions. Paprika can work with Asian and darker skintones.

What’s YOUR lazy day style?

Wishing you joy, happiness and beauty.

Road to Beauty & Bliss #2: Best Face and Foot Forward

{ How to Be Happy #2: Put Your Best Face and Best Foot Forward and Always Keep Going Forward }

Here’s my beauty, style and happiness mantra of the moment:

No matter what happens, live your life! Don’t let anything else stop you–not one person on this world has the power to stand in your way if you choose not to let them.

In your everyday
FASHION,
FACE/APPEARANCE/ATTITUDE,
WORK,
RELATIONSHIPS…
never stop being YOU and never let someone else’s negative energy put you down (even if that person is you). NEVER STOP GOING FORWARD.

Always put your best foot and face forward–in a great pair of heels, with a straight back and a fabulous shade of lipstick.

Here are my important (physical) tools for getting up and at ‘em and moving forward!

thereafterish, shoe porn, asian street style fashion, yellow shoes, yellow heels

Shoe Porn: wearing a great pair of shoes can instantly va-va-va-voom and outfit, and perk up your meh mood. Trust me. Shoes are to an outfit as lipstick is to the face: both pack a visual punch and can perk you up in an instant!

thereafterish, shoe porn, asian street style fashion, cage heels

Shoe Porn: a great pair of heels can change your outfit from blah to AH! Plus it makes shorties like me less “DOWN HERE.” :)

thereafterish, ootd, asian street style fashion, good posture for good outfit, asia street style

A straight back and good posture is the sign of true confidence, but is also necessary to make any outfit look GOOD.

thereafterish, red lips, perfect shade of red, universal red lipstick, perfect red lipstick, mac Ruby Woo, Nuance Beauty Paprika

The perfect shade of red for me is a pure/true red with no blue base: MAC’s Ruby Woo is the perfect red for every skin tone, or this one here by Nuance Beauty (sold at Longs or CVS stores) called Paprika.

Let’s always empower each other on this road to beauty and bliss!

Architecture of an Outfit: Cut Up Gangsta Ballerina in Chains

Edgy details like Shoulder cut-outs, gold hardware-like neck candy provide balance against the extreme feminity of gauzy lace skirts. This combo is my…

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Wine Shoulder Cut Outs, HRH Collection Cuff Necklace Neck Party, Lace Mini Skirt – Flouncy Summer Edge

Aloha ~ Hey, Lovecat! How are you today? It’s raining in Honolulu. Boo. But it was absolutely lovely for most of this week, and this is what I wore on Tuesday, when the sun was shining bright and golden through billowing clouds.

OOTD, thereafterish, HRH Collection, HRH Cuff necklace, Neck Candy, Hawaii Street Style

Tough + Girly, Edgy + Soft, Gold hardware by HRH Collection (www.shopwithhrh.com)

OOTD, thereafterish, HRH Collection, HRH Cuff necklace, Neck Candy, Hawaii Street Style

A super girly, flouncy lace skirt calls for some “harder”, tougher details, like gold neck candy in large hardware by HRH Collection, tribal heels and cut outs…

The flounce of the skirt is so wonderful, I feel like a ballerina, except when the Hawaiian trade winds kick up all violently, blowing the layers up like wave froth against the reef. I always get in a tizzy, wondering if passersby can see my chonies. That’s why I always wear a slip. :) Of course, my inner tomboy cringes at the foam-like girliness of a lace skirt, so I counter-balance all the femininity with tough hardware-like jewelry and edgy shoulder cut-outs in a jewel color. It’s a nice study on contrasts.

OOTD, thereafterish, HRH Collection, HRH Cuff necklace, Neck Candy, Hawaii Street Style

Gold hardware necklace: “Original Cuff Necklace” by HRH Collection (www.shopwithhrh.com)… Cut outs are sexy without being revealing.

So in love with this large gauge hardware glam necklace by HRH Collection. (Original Cuff Necklace, available in gold, silver and rockstar acid – $55USD.) It isn’t heavy at all, and provides a statement of glamour without weighing me down or being fussy.

Balance the heaviness of large statement neck candy with delicate studs, echoing the girliness of the skirt.

OOTD, thereafterish, HRH Collection, HRH Cuff necklace, Neck Candy, Hawaii Street Style

Keep everything else simple and understated. The neck and shoulders are busy.

Keep everything else minimal. Waffle cuff resonates with the cagey lines of the shoulder cut outs of the blouse. Resin ring is statement, yet still subtle. High waist skirt is good for petites who need curves.

Confused… day dreaming of more HRH jewelry. :)

You already know my philosophy on fashion is low effort with high impact. You don’t have to spend a lot to get mileage out of your clothes. Most of my clothes are from Target, H&M, BambooSky, or ClubMonaco clearance rack. It’s all about using details to get a high visual statement and balancing out elements to make sure nothing is 100% overwhelming. And if you’re still confused as I look above, just stand up straight and smile. Nothing makes you look better than an air of confidence (from a smile and good posture).

I hope your Friday is full of warmth and amazing things to see.

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Royal Purple Cocktail Style: Team ETSIS Goes Glam

Royal purple dress. Going glam in my cocktail best with my teammates at ETSIS HQ.

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Going glam in purple high low dress

My new company, ETSIS (pronounced “Et-SEES”), recently gave me the opportunity to go super glam for the first time since we moved here when we hosted a small cocktail party after work one evening. While on the daily, I’m still feminine, I sort of veer more towards the edgy most of the time. So, when I get the chance to glam up, I get really, really ecstatic.

OOTD, thereafterish, purple high low dress, vintage gold chain belt

I think gold looks better with royal blue or purple, but that’s because of my skin tone.

Team ETSIS is CEO/Founder/Fearless Style, Beauty and Anti-Aging Guru Devra (also known as Lady D); Jenny-J, the Executive Assistant (whom I replaced mid-June); the office mascot Gracie Doodle (aka “princess”) and myself, the Social Media Coordinator and Executive Administrator. (Not pictured is our pro style blogger, Allie.)

When in doubt of your own awesomeness, just put on a bright, fabulous dress, way too many accessories and too much makeup with bright lips, and you’ll feel so pretty you’ll forget how low you feel. (In my case, it just went from amazing to stellar.)

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Animal Lidded and Chained

Work it, girl. How I dress when I feel blah. Hat, shorts, sexy shoes and high-impact accessories with a pop of color.

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Leopard Button Down, Silver Body Chain, ETSIS Custom Floppy Sun Hat, Shorts and Sexy Yellow Platforms

What I wore when I felt like crap. It looks hard to do… but really, it’s the prints, accessories and shoes doing all the work.

Body Chain, Hawaii Street Style, ETSIS Hats

Swagger and rock all in one outfit: leopard shirt, body chain, and face hiding floppy sun hat.

Just put on a body chain when you want to feel bad ass. You just slip it on.

Can you see me? Silver armswag and body chain. Edge without trying too hard.

ETSIS Hats here in Hawaii customizes sun hats with UPF 50 scarf panels that wrap around your cheeks and neck to provide exceptional sun protection to the delicate skin on your face and neck. While they have their own sun protection hats line, I preferred to wear this wool floppy with my outfit. I snap-in the SunEscape Protection Panels when I drive or run errands. It’s a gorgeous style without much work at all.

Architecture of an Outfit: Spring-Summer 2012 Brights Trend: Coral Crush

I hate being called “trendy”, but the Spring/Summer 2012 brights trend of coral and neons is one I couldn’t resist. This gauzy split back shirt is one of the best impulse buys I’ve snapped up in a long time. And of course, my leopard wedge heels make their regularly scheduled appearance.

Hawaii Street Style, Spring Brights Trend, Coral Trend, Armswag, Leopard Wedge Heels

Spring Summer 2012 is all about neons and ultra vibrant hues, more so than it was last year. If wearing brights head to toe is too much for you, like it can be for me, you can always just wear one prominent color and keep the rest muted or neutral. A blouse or tee like this one can be a bit edgy, despite the floaty, ethereal fly away back, for the exact reason of all the skin. For the office, layer a striped or solid tank underneath to keep it appropriate. Then ground the breeziness with a half-tuck into pleated trousers.

I kept it playful by cuffing my mom-pants and contrasting the stripes and punch of the neon coral with my leopard wedges. Finally, I finished it with silver mismatched earrings and mixed metal armswag.

Max the Bear wanted to do an Outfit of the Day shot as well, to show off his summer cut.

I’ve been seeing Moloka‘i, Lana‘i these early mornings, beyond the gold haze of dawn shining through my window… and sometimes wreathed by clouds, almost lilac in the distance, I can faintly see Mau‘i’s Haleakala Volcano above the glimmering Pacific and neighbor islands. It’s a magical time in my life. The thing is… it’s just regular life. And I’ve just learned to see it in a better, happier way.

I’m normally an angry, irritable person. I used to proudly refer to myself as GrumpyPants or AngryPants. But I’m learning to and need to let that go. Life is too short to let anger control me. In the grand scheme of life, everything that makes me angry are just anxieties that never, ever come to fruition. People sometimes suck. Life throws bad things at you. Storms may rage, but you can always adjust the sails to find calmer seas. The control rests in your hands. It all starts with me.

I sincerely hope your days are amazing and your weeks are short, sweet and golden.

Architecture of an Outfit: Doing the Splits over Lace

Aloha kakou, Kittens!

It’s been awhile, yeah?

Fallen in love with breezy cotton shirts with built-in vents like this cotton-blend split back top. The best combo? Dressing comfortably doesn’t have to mean it can’t pack a punch. I can’t talk about how crazy and good–or just plain dang CRAZY GOOD–my life has gotten. Funemployment will be coming to an end this summer (more on that later), and I’ve been running around town like a chicken that faced the guillotine, busy with our out of town guests guests, furnishing the new place, and all manner of insanity to pamper myself like a queen for my dirty Thirtieth birthday in a couple of weeks. It’s a rough life, living in Hawaii, I tell ya.
