Beauty Review: Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick

Aloha, Beauty LoveCat,

Are you interested in the Revlon ColorStay offerings like the new Ultimate Suede lipstick line? Keep watching to see my thoughts on the matter. If you like Revlon Lipstick–some of the best lipsticks in the drugstore level of all time–you may want to watch the video.

Revlon claims that the ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipsticks give “both moisture and wear? This velvety soft formula with moisturizing shea butter and aloe is food proof and doesn’t quit. 20 Shades. Apply once and go.”

These Revlon Lipsticks retail for about $8.00USD at US drugstores and at any chemist or pharmacy or discount retailer internationally. In my opinion, they are not worth the money, despite being so inexpensive. They do not feel “suede-y”. Like other typical “longwear” lipsticks, they dry out your lips and are not ideal if you have cracks, lines or chapping on your lips. The formula sucks the moisture from your mouth and creates a sticky, tacky feel and the color starts to flake and scale a bit after about 5-10 minutes. And the formula is not ideally layered over or under lipbalm, as proper pigmentation is hard to get with a more emollient layer.

Here are some detail photos:

{Starting out fresh and looking nice when freshly applied.}

{After 15 minutes, starts to peel, scale, get dry and flaky.}

{Scales, close up. But at least my teeth look nice and white. :T }

They don’t live up to what they claim to do, so, other than the cute names like Fashionista, Couture, Socialite, Front Row and Muse, and nice looking colors, this iteration of the Revlon ColorStay family does not live up to the line or to the Revlon brand.

Final Grade: I give it a D. If it weren’t for the cute names, the product would get an F.

Remember: US drugstores like Walgreens, Longs, CVS and Rite Aid often have generous return policies, so make sure you ask if you can return an item if you tried it out and didn’t like it. In my experience, I have been able to return used makeup items with a receipt. Without a receipt, I’ve gotten store credit on a gift card.

Early 30s Anti-Aging Night Time Skin Care Routine

Aloha, Lovecat!

Some readers have commented or mentioned that I have really good skin (I think it ain’t great, as I mentioned in my Bareface Confessions video), but I’ve been asked on several occasions for skin care tips or for me to reveal my skin care regimen. So here we go.

{My Current Night Time Skin Care Routine: An Anti-Aging Skin Care Routine for Early 30 Somethings to Prevent Wrinkles}

Products listed in order of use:

  1. Home made organic olive oil, grapeseed oil and aloe juice makeup remover in water bottle… I will post a video tutorial on how to make this makeup remover
  2. Sanitas Lemon Cream Cleanser
  3. Home made tea tree oil toner – I will also make a video tutorial on how to make this toner at home…
  4. Osmosis Clear Facial Conditioner spray
  5. Obagi Elastiderm Eye Complete Complex Serum
  6. Osmosis Correct Aging/Normal Skin Serum
  7. Homemade anti-aging oil cocktail serum (contains the following oils: olive, grapeseed, argan, evening primrose, camellia seed, vitamin e and rosehip) for anti-aging, skin renewal and anti-inflammation. – Again, another one I have to make a video for.
  8. Mario Badescu cellufirm drops booster
  9. The Face Shop Pore Minimizer Controlling Emulsion moisturizer
  10. Kellett Skin Care Intensive Radiance Eye Treatment eye cream

Some things to note:

Age: Early Thirties
Skin type: Normal to combination skin with oily T-zone and slight sensitivity

Concerns:

  • fine lines forming
  • hyperpigmentation (melasma) on forehead, cheeks and chin (my T-zone is darker than the rest of my face)
  • dark under eye circles
  • collagen and loss of firmness around eyes from lack of sleep and sleeping on face
  • some pimples here and there
  • aging and wrinkles on décolletage, backs of hands and tops of feet

My skin care philosophy:
I firmly believe that a preventative approach to anti-aging is a better, more pro-active approach than trying to repair and restore later–an approach that could cost you thousands upon thousands of dollars if you wait too long. Thereby, the preventative approach is also more cost-effective in the long run. You can prevent, but curing later is HARD.

I also firmly believe that you need to invest in quality products that are well-researched and vetted when you can afford to. Investing in your skin is important for your overall health (skin is your largest organ). If you don’t believe in reincarnation, you only get one skin in this lifetime, so you should take as good care of it as possible.

Go natural when you can. Research your companies and make sure they take a more holistic approach to skin care and the science behind their product formulations and technology. The fewer chemicals you put on your skin, the less those toxins absorb into your bloodstream, muscle tissues and organs.

I also do not believe in over exfoliation. Beauty norms say microdermabrasion, harsh chemical peels and strong at-home scrubs and at-home peel kits blast away dead skin and top layers of skin, revealing new skin and making skin look more luminous and youthful, as well as encouraging collagen production for renewal.

Well, after meeting skin scientist Dr. Ben Johnson, founder of Osmosis Pur Medical Skin Care, my mentality changed. Studies actually show that over exfoliation through scrubbing, harsh aesthetic and dermatological treatments like microdermabrasion, Fraxel, Thermage and chemical peels, can be harmful to the skin. These treatments create damage to the top layers of skin, the stratum corneum, in response skin tissues accelerate collagen production to repair the damage. However, the collagen renewal resulting from damage by removing the top layers of skin (essentially, the protecting layer to your dermis–the deeper layers of skin) only replaces 90% of the collagen lost during the damage process. Why strip your skin only to create a deficit of collagen? Once you remove the protective top layers of your skin, the new youthful skin revealed is actually quite sensitive and super vulnerable to even more damage and aging. That just doesn’t make sense to me. The science is in direct contradiction to the beauty norms and creeds going around.

Remove the dead skin cells that block pores with light exfoliation, but don’t strip your protective layer. It’s like going skiing without proper winter gear on. You get wind burned and wind lashed, sun burned, cut up and seriously injured.

Seriously, pick up Dr. Johnson’s book. It’ll change your perspective on skin care and health. Well-renowned Dermatologist Dr. Perricone’s skin care philosophy is pretty parallel to Dr. Johnson’s regarding repairing from within and avoiding doing too much damage to the skin that the skin can’t recover from.

Very importantly, the best anti-aging product is proper sun protection, not a bunch of serums and night creams. Protect your skin during the day with a good broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30+, reapplied every 2 hours to the exposed skin (don’t forget your hands and tops of feet), wear a good wide-brimmed sun protection hat, a jacket when in the car, and avoiding peak UV hours in the middle of the day. UVA and UVB rays not only increase your risk of cancer, but also damage elastin and collagen in your skin, resulting in saggy skin, hyper-pigmentation (brown spots) and fine lines and wrinkles. And remember, UV rays shine 365 days a year. As long as there is natural light, UV rays are coming through, and UVA rays are every bit as strong during cloudy days as sunny days. So, regardless of climate, temperature and weather, sun protect every single day to reduce risk of skin cancer and slow your aging process.

Lastly, the most important thing you can do for your skin is lead a healthy lifestyle. What you put ON your skin is not as important as what you put IN your body (as someone pointed out). Eating clean, whole foods, lots of veggies and fruits and less processed ingredients will contribute better to the quality of your skin than any beauty product. Drink lots of water, get lots of sleep and exercise. A healthful lifestyle will do wonders for your skin and slow own the aging process.

{ What are some of YOUR favorite products to use in your skincare routine? Is preventive better? Do you have some beauty tips? }

Rock on, Lover!

The Healthy Way to Get Your Vitamin D

Aloha, Lovecat!

If you’re curious or confused about Vitamin D and how to get the recommended dosage? Keep reading. This post may clear up some uncertainty for you!

As a Lupus Survivor, learning about this health issue was eye-opening and extremely important for my well-being. After a particularly bad lupus flare after being in the sun for 6 hours (with sun protection, mind you), I decided I needed to do a little more research about UV exposure and Vitamin D was a huge topic that kept on popping up. My fellow auto-immunies may find this article particularly helpful.

Vitamin D, ETSIS, Sun Protection, Prevent Skin Cancer, How to Get Vitamin D, How to get vitamin D safely

{Vitamin D3 Supplements: one of the healthiest, cheapest ways to get your recommended daily dose of the bone-strengthening stuff.}

Until recently, everyone touted Vitamin C as the wonder ingredient and miracle nutrient. And yes, it’s true, Vitamin C is essential in any anti-aging and healthy skin and body regimen, but new research shows that Vitamin D is one of the best things you can put in your body.

Why Vitamin D is Good For You

Vitamin D is like calcium’s co-pilot. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, fortifying the bones. It’s essential for bone health. Vitamin D is also essential in the “modulation of cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and reduction of inflammation,” according to the National Institutes of Health. Considering that many cells in the body—up to 2,000 genes, reports Women’s Health— respond to or are regulated by Vitamin D, it is basically a nutrient that every part of your body needs.

Vitamin D Deficiency

sun protection, ETSIS, escaping the sun in style, sun protection, Suncreen for cancer prevention

{Some very mis-informed, old-school doctors blame safe sun practices like use of sunscreen or wearing sun protection clothing for some individuals’ Vitamin D deficiency.}

The lack of Vitamin D in the body has been linked to a myriad of health problems, including, but not limited to, “depression, heart disease, pregnancy problems, birth defects, skin and other cancers, and multiple sclerosis” according to Women’s Health.

Some doctors blame excessive sunscreen and sun protection use as the culprit for Vitamin D deficiency. But I argue that that view demonizes one of the most healthy lifestyle choices a person can make without examining or even mentioning other important causation factors or the health risks of obtaining vitamin D through sun exposure.

Firstly, Vitamin D is severely lacking in the traditional American Diet. Cold water fish (cod, tuna, sockeye salmon, sardines), fortified dairy (yogurt, milk, cheese) and mushrooms all have vitamin D. But the average American doesn’t incorporate these into his or her diet to get enough of the recommended dose. Additionally, some vegetarians and vegans, in particular, will often find themselves Vitamin D deficient because they don’t consume foods containing the nutrient. However, over-eating any of the Vitamin D rich foods may lead to some health risks, and most foods don’t contain enough IUs to get the recommended amount.

Skin color plays a part in Vitamin D deficiency as well. Melanin blocks UV rays from penetrating the skin, decreasing Vitamin D conversion. The darker your skin, the more melanin you have. So, lighter-skinned people will absorb more UV and Vitamin D, whereas darker-skinned folks, less. People of color often age slower than their Caucasian counterparts, but they can often be Vitamin D deficient as well.

Lastly, sunscreen usage and sun protection plays a role in Vitamin D blockage, but has inherent health risks.

Vitamin D from UV Exposure = Unfriendly Fire

tanning, dangers of tanning, how to get vitamin d safely, how to get vitamin d, etsis

Some old-school, mis-informed Doctors prescribe tanning or sun bathing during peak UV hours (10AM – 3PM) to their Vitamin D deficient patients. A big no-no, according to the National Institute of Health.

UVB rays interact with the skin and convert it into Vitamin D3. BUT! (And it’s a big one!) In order to get the right amount, you’d need to be completely un-protected and exposed to the sun between peak UV hours (10AM – 3PM in broad daylight) for 15 minutes, or you’d need to tan in a tanning bed. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), sunscreens over SPF 8 do appear to block some amount of UVB. HOWEVER, NIH cautions that most people in general don’t use sunscreen properly or reapply as instructed. “Therefore, skin likely synthesizes some Vitamin D even when it is protected by sunscreen as typically applied.” (NIH.gov)

Numerous health organizations, American Academy of Dermatology, the Skin Cancer Foundation AND the National Institute of Health all agree that trying to obtain Vitamin D from sun exposure poses serious health risks: namely, skin cancers. NIH goes as far as to state: “there are no studies to determine whether UVB-induced synthesis of Vitamin D (Vitamin D from UV rays) can occur without increased risk of skin cancer.” Additionally, if you live north of Atlanta, Georgia, during the fall and winter you can’t get enough UVB to produce the recommended amount of Vitamin D, anyway. Even if you’re able to synthesize Vitamin D from UV rays, most people go over and above the recommended 15 minutes, after which, UV rays begin to damage the skin at the cellular level, leading to collagen and elastin breakdown, resulting in wrinkles, crepey skin, spots and sagging. And remember, UVB is what produces Vitamin D, but the whole time you’re outside, you’re absorbing UVA rays, too, which don’t do ANYTHING for you, health-wise, and certainly not aging-wise.

sun protection, how to get vitamin d, how to get vitamin d safely, sun bathing feet, etsis

National Institutes of Health: “There are no studies to determine whether UVB-induced synthesis of Vitamin D (Vitamin D from UV rays) can occur without increased risk of skin cancer.”

UV rays can trigger flares of certain auto-immune diseases as well, such as lupus and arthritis. Personally speaking, whenever I spend more than an hour or two outside, I often get serious lupus flares, even though I cover up, wear UPF gear (rash guard, hat) and apply/reapply SPF 50+ broad spectrum sunscreen.

The health and skin health risks of getting Vitamin D from sun exposure seriously outweigh any benefit. Why try to do your body good only to risk cancer and severe aging?

The safest way to get Vitamin D

The safest way to get your Vitamin D is to ingest it the old fashioned way: take your vitamins. Supplements come in easy to swallow gel caplets. Laura Armas, M.D., assistant professor of endocrinology and a researcher in the Osteoporosis Research Center at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, tells Women’s Health that Vitamin D supplements are the “easiest, cheapest and safest way to make sure you’re covered.”

taking vitamins, how to get vitamin d safely, how to get vitamin d, sun protection, ETSIS

Do like your mama told you: Take your vitamins (and wear a hat)!

Take a Vitamin D3 (important to note that it is D3) capsule of at least 600IUs to get the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for the average person aged 1-70. After age 70, aim for 800 IUs. You can get supplements at any drugstore, health food store, super market or Costco for minimal cost.

There have been some concerns that it is possible to OD on Vitamin D, resulting in blood toxicity. Because D is fat-soluble and not water-soluble (like Vitamin C), your body won’t pee out the excess. However, recent studies have shown that the body can tolerate even large doses of D over long periods before reaching toxicity. According to the Mayo Clinic, you’d have to take 50,000 IUs daily for several months to reach toxicity.

Doctors may prescribe more Vitamin D3 than the RDA to treat certain auto-immune diseases or health disorderS. My Rheumatologist prescribed 3,000 IUs of Vitamin D3 daily and told me to limit my outdoor activities to a couple hours or less and always wear sun protection, in order to reduce chances of severe lupus flares.

In conclusion, Vitamin D is essential to maintaining good health and strong bones. The sun doesn’t play as nice as you think. If you want to keep the wrinkles at bay, stay healthy, reduce your chances of skin cancer AND save money, just do like your mom told you all those years ago: take your vitamins and put a hat on before going outside.

Rock on, Lover!

The History of Makeup [infographic]

Aloha, Lovecat!

Anyone who knows me really well, or has been reading me for awhile, knows that I am a self-professed beauty junkie. I love makeup, I hoard skincare products and probably have spent more on beauty than on my shoes and clothes combined (this might be slight hyperbole here, but still). But if I think I could probably be many dollars richer if I just decided to skimp on makeup and my sundry skin care products. BUT I NEED THEM! You only get ONE SKIN. That is, if you don’t believe in reincarnation!

So of course, I found this infographic on the history of makeup throughout the centuries highly interesting.

Thank the heavens most makeup nowadays doesn’t contain ingredients like lead, arsenic or mercury–ingredients so toxic you could severely damage your skin, develop serious illnesses and health problems, or even die!

These days, there are controversies brewing over animal testing of ingredients, toxicity of and cancer risks of certain chemicals and ingredients, green-washing of brands, debate over whether natural is more effective than chemical-based products, etc. Regardless of how the discussions and technologies change, vanity is an enduring aspect of the human condition, and therefore, makeup is here to stay. Hell, it’s been around for more than 6,000 years! I just wonder what beauty companies will think of next?

Whether you’re a beauty fanatic, just a basic user or a beauty newbie, there is no denying the power of makeup to transform a person.

Here are some of my personal favorite beauty articles I’ve written over the years:

Now have a seriously beautiful day!

Life with Lupus: Write Me a Letter, Put Your Picture In It, Too.

Sometimes, a girl has to voice her frustrations with her situation and let it all out. When I’m stressed, I like to write letters. Then I throw them away, and hopefully the stress I had clinging heavily to my back gets thrown away with that letter.

{ Life With Lupus: Dear Lupus, You Suck. }

I wrote lupus a letter on Facebook.

I’m going to find a way to kick your f*cking *ss to the curb, come hell or high water. Trust, bitch.

Life Inspo: Body-Image: Throw Out Your Measuring Tape

My thoughts on seeking happiness by rewriting the ways we measure our own body image.

Healthy body image, measure of beauty, ideal body measurements, how to be happy, seeking happiness

The ideal body size and measurements for Miss America in the 1920s. Today, these measurements are considered “big” by the modeling/fashion industry. Not healthy.

Forget everything today’s society tells you is the “measure” of ideal beauty. 90 years ago, super-models were much more curvy, voluptuous and buxom than today’s angular, stick-like women that clip-clop down the runway. In today’s day and age, the ideal figure would now be told to go on a diet and get her sh*t together.

That type of ideal forced on us to accept and swallow and aim toward is not only sometime unattainable, but it’s unreal. Something forced down my throat from a young age to model myself after, which I will never be able to look like, no matter how hard I try… that’s not my ideal of beauty. That’s my idea of emotional and mental torture.

I’m petite, a little curvy with some soft bits in places I wish they weren’t. But I’m healthy and I’ve taken the better part of 10 years to be moderately OK with my body as it is, as long as I know I’m working on it and trying my best to dress myself for my shape, stature and health level. I will never be an A/B cup, 5’6″ – 5’11″, with a 23″ waist and a 32″ hip line. I’ll never fit those jeans with a 32″ inseam. And, as I get older, it’s inevitable that my size 3 will expand to a size 6 or 8 or 10. But I’ve accepted it and I will make sure to focus on feeling as healthy inside as possible, and let that health and happiness radiate outward.

I will never be that milky white, leggy blond on those runways, or those tall, gorgeous Chinese models that the fashion world seems to be all enthralled with.

I’m okay with that. But how many women have reached that same level of acceptance about their body, health and size that I have? I’d go out on a limb and say not many.

It shouldn’t be about how tall or short or big your thighs and waist are. That’s not a real measure of beauty. Because, when it comes down to it, isn’t “beautiful” about how you feel about yourself, rather than how you compare to a set of measurements and specs? You’re not a car or a motorcycle. You’re a living, breathing creature.

Let’s throw out this stupid measuring tape notion of beauty and stop comparing ourselves to those thin, monstrously tall stick-thin figures that stomp down the runways in amazing garb non of us would ever feel comfortable wearing (or be able to afford). Let’s focus on how our body feels inside and how much we take care of ourselves by living a healthy lifestyle, exercising and treating ourselves well as a measure of beauty.

How do you feel today? Did you sleep well? Did you dream wonderful dreams? Did you exercise today and get your dose of oxygen and endorphins? Did you eat good meals that helped you age slower, live longer and think more deeply? Did you do things you enjoy? Did you wear an outfit you really liked? Did you use makeup that makes you feel bright and glowy? Did you have reasons to smile today?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, there is your measure of beauty for the day. Let THAT be your guide.

It’s a struggle for me, but I’ve thrown out my mental “beauty tape measure,” and I don’t intend to ever use it again. How about you?

Rock On, Lover.

Life with Lupus: Get that Beauty Sleep

When you suffer from lupus everyday can be a battle.

It’s no secret I suffer from a sometimes debilitating disease called lupus. Instead of a casual mention here and there, and an errant whine or moan on FB, I’m going to start a new category called Life with Lupus, because I’d like to document where I am, what I’m doing to fight it, or how I cope with the often daily different symptoms and effects of this zany disease. It’s a roller coaster ride, and the last couple of weeks have had me on a fast dip and I’m struggling to get out of it.

This week’s battle:

{ Get that beauty sleep. }

sleep good for your skin, sleep good for your health, health problems lack of sleep, skin problems lack of sleep

{ Sleep is good for your skin and your health. Lack of sleep can lead to serious health problems as well as premature aging. }

There’s more than one reason why it’s called “beauty sleep.” Sleep is a deeply restorative function, during which the different organs and systems within the body repair and heal it.

According to Pamela Weintraub, executive director of Discover Magazine, sleep “is a master regulator of health. A sleep deficit or disruption can create wide-ranging havoc, compromising our immune system, causing inflammation, and damaging our genes. Losing just an hour of sleep a night increases risk of cancer, heart attack, stroke and type 2 diabetes.”

(Click HERE for a list of the different health issues connected to lack of sleep.)

Beauty-wise, lack of sleep can actually age you, says Rachel Grumman Bender, an award-winning health and beauty writer for The New York Post. While you sleep, the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of your skin, repairs itself from the damage of daily pollutants and aging factors like the sun’s rays, environmental pollutants, etc. This layer helps to lock moisture in and prevents germs from migrating into your skin. Skimping on sleep actually decreases the time the stratum corneum (aka your skin barrier) has to repair itself and lock in moisture. The less time your skin has to recuperate, the more dehydrated your skin becomes, and, over time can become saggy and prone to wrinkling.

Additionally, lack of sleep can lead to permanent dark circles, puffy eyes, droopy skin and even worse, loss of collagen. According to Camille Peri and Dr. James Beckerman for WebMD, prolonged sleep debt causes the body to release the stress hormone cortisol, which, in excess amounts, can break down collagen resulting in a loss of skin elasticity. Lack of sleep also results in the body releasing too little human growth hormone, the hormone responsible for tissue repair, bone strength and skin strength (WebMD). Sleep too little, and you disrupt the body’s natural healing cycle, which can lead to premature aging.

I mean, just add those beauty things to the pile of the host of health problems you’re susceptible to from lack of sleep, and you’ve got a serious case for getting those Zs.

thereafterish, living with lupus, sleep deprivation health, lack of sleep health, life with lupus, living with lupus

Living with Lupus: I have good and bad days. On bad days, I just want to stay in bed.

{ Personally speaking }

I don’t just always suffer from lack of sleep. I often find myself suffering from oversleeping. I sleep 4 hours here, 13 hours there. What results is that my sleeping patterns are messed up, I’m always feeling groggy, fatigued, mentally fogged-up, sore, irritable (sometimes depressed) and NEVER in the mood for sex. So I’m confused. I sleep more than most people (according to Husby), especially on weekends, or when I take a sick day, but I almost NEVER feel well-rested or in tip top shape.

Lately, with my PMS on the rage for the last two weeks, and with the Hawaii Vog (volcanic smog), my immune system has been kicking my ass back and forth.

This is when things have not only taken a dive in my own life, but they’ve taken a huge toll on my family as well.

Marital intimacy can be a problem. I’m either groggy and headachy, or my lower back feels like it’s been hit by a baseball bat several times, or my hands and feet are swollen and it’s too painful to engage in anything more can snuggling or kissing. We haven’t even been able to relax together, giving each other backrubs or foot rubs during our normally scheduled snuggle time, because I’m huddled in a fetal position on the couch or because my hands are swollen and look like Vlassic Dill Pickles. Consequently, we spend different times relaxing, independent of each other, like him hiking two weekend days in a row or surfing, and me crashed out in front of the TV, drinking tea and watching HGTV. Instead of spending time together, growing closer as a couple and bonding as we should be, we’re spending time on our own, with only one of us feeling enriched and fulfilled as a person (i.e., him).

thereafterish, living with lupus, sleep deprivation health, lack of sleep health, life with lupus, living with lupus

Some days, the pain is unbearable, and it’s easier said than done to pick oneself up by the pantlegs and get the heck up.

This, of course, confounds, hurts and frustrates Husby/N to no end. He wants his wife in tip top shape and he can do nary a thing to fix it (typical male response). And he wants his partner to be the person that she was before all this pesky disease stuff got in the way (note: I was diagnosed 7 years ago). Not only do my health problems and mood problems get in the way of a physical relationship, they get in the way of me being a proper partner to a very overworked husband. It takes me a week to fold several loads of laundry and put them away. I put off vacuuming the house and cleaning the kitchen. I can’t clean the bathtub without twisting out my back. I can’t sweep or dust or mop unless I set aside a whole afternoon so that I can do it meticulously and slowly, so as not to incur or trigger a flare. Simple things like keeping the house clean or snuggling on the couch can become sources of pain for me, and sometimes I avoid them altogether… which makes me kind of like a deadbeat wife without wanting to be.

A lot can be fixed if I could just get my sleeping patterns back into better form. I’d probably flare up less, have more energy, have some libido (please, God), remember more stuff (yes, please!), lose the tummy pooch (seriously!), be less irritable (miracle) and all-over generally more youthful and bubbly. How can I do this? Oh, God.

thereafterish, living with lupus, sleep deprivation health, lack of sleep health, life with lupus, living with lupus

I see more of these than I care to admit, as a lupus survivor. If I can learn how to get my sleep problems under control, maybe I could visit the doctor less.

{ In Practice }

Here are some things I’m going to try to get my sleep cycle back on track:

  • Give up caffeine. Just say no to that coffee.
  • *I did it once for a year before our wedding, and I felt amazing.

  • Exercise more.
  • *I felt amazingly well and recovering when I was doing pilates-based physical therapy twice to thrice weekly (a two month prescription that ran out in December). Now that I’m left to my own devices and meant to do these exercises at home, I’ve found my exercise regimen has fallen by the wayside and, as a result, my joints are not happy campers. I need to stop being so lazy/mindless about exercise–specifically when there are workout routines particularly created for core and joint strength!
    *I’ve tried to incorporate more activity into my day in small ways here and there so I am not stressing out over one hour long workout session if I miss it. I climb the stairs to my office three to four times before going in, or I make a point to climb the stairs in sets of 4 over the course of the day, to have a total of 16 flights of stairs climbed. I walk laps of a store before shopping, and I park my car at the far end of the lot so I have to get more walking in. I park my car in between places when I have to run errands, so I have to walk back to my car across the lot before I go to the next spot. When I go to lunch, I park at the far end of the parking lot far across the mall and walk to my lunch spot to get my food, so I’m throwing in more steps that way.
    *I set an alarm every 5 minutes before the hour to get up, stretch for two minutes and do some plank ups (push ups from a standing position against a wall) and squats to stretch my core, so I’m not building up fat tissues in my legs from sitting too long.
    *Am I disciplined? Not really, but I’m trying.
    *If only I could make myself wake up and do it in the morning.

  • Eat less processed food, fewer animal-by products and more fruit and veggies.
  • *Doubtless this would be much better if I ate breakfast. But kicking the cheese and pizza habit may help by body combat inflammation much better.
    *Lunches usually consist of huge salads as big as my face with tuna salad, carrot sticks, whole grain toast with jam, celery sticks with peanut butter and some hummus. Occasionally, I’ll have a piece or three of cheese along with the above. Once a week or so, I binge and eat from the hot bar at Whole Foods across the street.
    *It’s when I eat out that I eat like sh*t or forget that my body hates dessert.

  • Eat most of my food for the day prior to 3PM.
  • *Gotta stop eating those huge dinners. My Diet is so back loaded… I always eat my heaviest meal at night, which is backwards. And I almost hardly eat breakfast. :(

  • Put a nightly moratorium on technology 1 hour before sleep.
  • *This will be the hardest to kick.

I’m sure there’s other stuff for me to try, but I need to start small and manageable and snowball my way to the next thing I can accomplish.

It’s really eye opening, learning about how sleep affects your health, and how lack of sleep can worsen auto-immune symptoms. If you’re like me… you should know that proper, restful sleep is pretty much your best friend.

Do you suffer from an auto-immune disease or condition, or do you have some condition that has really taken a huge toll on your personal life? If so, let’s share. Nothing helps recovery more than a community of people who empathize and can help encourage each other where the lay person can’t always truly understand, even if they want to.

Rock on, Lover!

Day in the Life: Yesterday Was Pathetic, Today is OK

Yesterday kinda rocked, but also kind of stunk so this title by a song of the same name by Icelandic Band Múm is kind of appropriate.

Koko Marina, Island Brew Coffeehouse

Where I ate lunch after my Doctor’s appointment. My view from Island Brew Coffeehouse in Hawaii Kai, next to Koko Marina

I’ve been waking up with mild throbbing, pulling tension in my forehead, behind my eyebrows and at my temples for several days. As the days spend out their hours and come to a close, the tension becomes actual pain and a sharp, pounding pressure and continues to mount until I have to go to bed and I feel like I’ve just put my head through a wall. Hot showers, neti-potting (nasal flushing or douching, if you prefer), facial massage, cold compresses, Tylenol (acetaminophen)–nothing I tried would bring relief. Monday and Tuesday night, the pain became so unbearable, I grew dizzy, my eyesight started warping and blurring a bit, and I couldn’t sleep properly. Which is saying something, because I can sleep through a hurricane once I actually fall asleep (which is the usual difficulty for me)! In addition to a lupus/arthritis flare in my hips and back, my head was raging…all in all, Monday and Tuesday night pretty much sucked except for the part where Husby cooked me delicious seared tofu and veggies for dinner and let me veg on the couch all night.

I have never had a headache this bad… nor have I had one last for five days straight.

Yesterday, I came into work, feeling mildly as if I’d been run over, the buzzing in my forehead only getting stronger. I called my Doctor’s office, who was able to get me into the clinic the same day. Then I checked in with the bosses (I work for a couple), who said, “don’t even think about taking your work home, just go home and rest,” and by 11AM I was out the door for the day. (I love my bosses and my job. So grateful for them.)

1.5 hours at the doc. It wasn’t stress, it wasn’t a cluster headache (as I feared), not a tension headache, but a sinus problem. I have managed to develop allergies. Never in my life have I had allergies. Even when I lived in the smog and pollen ridden Midwest, I did not have allergies. Damn you, tropics and your perfect climate for flourishing molds and fungi! All that damn mold from living in the rain forest and all the mold we regularly have to clean away from our rainy mountain top home have made me develop allergies! That explains the X-men mutant strength blue and brown dark circles I’ve developed over the last year that make me look like someone beat the living sh*t out of me every morning, which I must cover with corrector, foundation and strongly pigmented concealers (4 layers, people!) everyday to look somewhat normal. (I swear you can still see them through all that cr*p.) And the random sneezing (I thought it was just because my office and car–two places I spend a lot of time in–were dusty). And the headaches. And the dizziness. And the eyeball probs. But seriously, allergies SUCK. Husby has LOTS of them. It has, on occasion, been absolute misery for him.

BLARGH!

After the disappointing news at the doctor, my head still raging, I decided to call my massage therapist and see if she could squeeze me in. YES. 1 hour of relief. With half an hour to kill, I decided to eat lunch by Koko Marina at a local coffeehouse. As I walked in, one of my favorite local recording artists, Jon Yamasato (also here), was floating through the place, and silver light flooded the walls as it reflected off the water of the marina. I just sat, listened to the quiet and contented conversations of the patrons enjoying their coffees, heard the whir of the coffee grinder and the hubbub of the staff making lunches and lattés, watched the sun glint off the water like glitter alive. That moment felt as if I’d come upon an oasis. My head still pounded… but everything felt less chaotic.

Then, massage. Om, b*tches. Serious om. That’s all I can say.

Fail, install this side down, construction fail, epic fail

INSTALL THIS SIDE DOWN. Translate to: #FAIL

Then, head still pounding, but less badly, I picked up yet more items at the drugstore, grabbed my prescriptions from Costco (where I noticed, in the loo, that someone had installed the toilet paper holder upside down–another example of wonderful Hawaii construction standards, LOL) and then headed home, by which time it was already almost 4:30PM. What? So much for working from home.

I tried to eat something and then spent the next hour medicating; massaging my arms, back, temples and forehead; inhaling bergamot and tea tree-oil infused steam from a hot compress over my face; applying Biofreeze to my inflamed hips and lower back and watching HGTV. Fell asleep by 6 and then woke up again only to take a nap from 8-9:30 to make myself a hodgepodge of dinner and clean the kitchen. I missed seeing sunset (sunset chasing is one of my newfound hobbies), which can be epic in my neighborhood due to the moisture and atmosphere that develops on this slightly wetter side of town. Sad. I’m not sure how I spent the time the rest of the night or what time I even managed to drift off to sleep, but I know it involved re-watching more episodes of Downton Abbey, House Hunters and The Property Brothers before I completely conked out.

hawaii sunset, sunset in hawaii, thereafterish, hawaii living, living in hawaii, hawaii life, hawaii kai

The epically gorgeous sunsets in Hawaii are even more stunning particularly in East Oahu where there’s more moisture and clouds.

How do I feel today? Dizzy, lightheaded and sore. But at least I don’t feel like I got run over by a truck, so that’s better. But I’m a bit annoyed and frustrated.

Because of this new development in my body there are yet more drugs I must take from now on, in addition to the half bottle of supplements, vitamins and couple lupus-related meds I already take daily. I’m a healthy person… I eat right (mostly), I exercise (more than the average American), I hydrate, stretch, try to be positive and live [mostly] drama-free, but man, all this pill popping and these headache issues really chap my ass. Can’t I just be normal for once? So. F*cking. Annoying.

I guess there’s a price to pay for paradise after all. I’ll take it. Despite this stupid hiccup, I’m still insanely lucky to live here. And no matter what, I still wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. Ever.

How are you today?

How to Be Happy #4: Quick Pick Me Up – Brighten Up!

Aloha, Lovecat. I think you know what I mean when I say, today is just one of those days.

{ How to Be Happy #4: I need a MAJOR pick me up, stat! }

I’m not going to lie, I woke up in a slightly foul mood, only compounded by the strange feelings of queasiness, dizziness and pain I’ve been feeling all morning. I mean, why would my usual morning coffee almost induce vomiting? Why did I have to choke down that cantaloupe instead of being able to savor it like normal? Why couldn’t I stand for more than a few minutes at a time? Why did my shoulder hurt so much I had to take my bra off? Why couldn’t I turn my head without wanting to cry? It seemed like today was the crap icing on top of a week of random strange illnesses (probably lupus-related), and today I was literally sick of it all–EVERYTHING was starting to piss me off.

Especially my face. Lookin’ all sallow and worn out. I wanted to punch that face I saw in the mirror.

And then I started feeling like all this frustration was just snowballing itself. I look like crap because I feel like crap, and because I feel like crap, I look like crap–a self-perpetuating cycle.

Was there something I could do to make myself at least feel better, even if there was no quick pick-me-up for my body ailments?

Answer: Yes. Lipstick and a smile.

thereafterish, what i wore, pick me up, lipstick, brighten up, lipstick mood lifter

It sounds stupid, but wearing a bright lipstick can be an instant mood lifter. Try it.

Cue dramatic eye rolls and incredulity! Okay, but before I totally lose you… let me explain!

I work in sun protection/anti-aging/skincare for my day job, so I spend a lot of time immersed in beauty magazines, beauty blogs, medical “beauty” and health sites. Time and time again, I keep reading that the one of the ways to perk yourself up is to swipe on a bright color of lipstick. It instantly brightens and lifts the face and makes you look more awake. When you look more awake, alert and brighter, it can contribute to a change in your confidence and self-esteem levels, even if only temporarily. This temporary boost increases mood levels, which decreases stress levels and increases immunity. So, by making you feel better about yourself, you reduce your stress and boost your body’s health and mood.

To magnify this boost, make yourself smile. It’s okay if you fake it. Smile at a stranger crossing the street. Smile at that blog post you’re reading. Smile at the person in the car next to you during your commute to work or school. Smile at that snarky e-card on Facebook. If you make yourself smile and laugh, the behavior can actually lead to an increase in endorphins, which alleviates stress and anxiety. Behavior conditions attitude and vice versa. It’s Psychology 101.

It seems so superficial, but the numerous studies I’ve come across appear to show actual medical/psychological validity of the lipstick theory.

thereafterish, what i wore, pick me up, lipstick, brighten up, lipstick mood lifter

Wearing: mixture of Revlon’s Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm in “Crush” (deep raspberry) and MAC Ruby Woo (true red).

So I put on a bright raspberry red lipstick (and a good amount of concealer on my dark circles) and I made myself smile. A bunch. No, seriously, like a grip of smiling.

Am I still pissed? Nope. Am I still sore and nauseous? Yes, but it doesn’t seem to bother me quite as much. I’ll call it a win for lipstick.

Do you have any tips for quick pick me ups when you’re having A Day? Would love to hear some!

Let’s start out the week with Beauty/Happiness Mae’s Mantra of the Moment.

Happiness is a decision you make every moment of everyday. I choose happiness and living my life without regret today.

You can choose happiness. It might be contrived, but after awhile, you’ll begin to feel it. The change will well up within you, from your center, and radiate outward until all of you pulses with happiness.

The Beauty Benefits of Eating Fruit: Eat Your Way to Beautiful Skin

Aloha!

I know, I know, I’ve been missing. Most of my work takes up my free time on the Internet, and I spend a lot of time Facebooking, writing and tweeting as part of my Social Media Coordinator and Executive Administration at Escaping The Sun In Style (ETSIS, also a hat company). When I’m not here at thereafterish., frolicking on a beach, running errands or doing general housewifery, I’m working. That’s just how it goes when you find something you love, yah?

Last week, I wrote on the company’s beauty & style blog about the health benefits of eating fruit. Little known facts to me: fruit can calm bad breath, reduce depression, heal wounds, lower cholesterol. In addition to health benefits, however, are the MANY SKINCARE and BEAUTY BENEFITS of FRUIT.

health benefits of fruits, beauty benefits of fruits, etsis hats

Cure for bad breath? Drink lemon water!

In the blog post, I wrote:

Avocados:
This super fruit is packed with fiber (who knew!), Vitamins B6, C, E, potassium and non-saturated fats (aka, the good fat). Vitamin B6 converts food into energy and helps the body metabolize fats and proteins, supports healthy skin, bones, hair and teeth. Vitamin E may slow the deterioration that comes with aging and protects cells from damage that can turn into cancer (free-radicals). The good fats help keep skin moist and prevent wrinkles.

Go read the rest of the article here: “Eat your way to beautiful skin.” Maybe you’ll learn something new!

So, now that you know more, do you think you’re going to chuck that pint of ice cream or that candy bar for some canteloupe, watermelon or an apple? I did today! I think I feel prettier already!

What’s in My Makeup Bag?

Want to know What’s in My Makeup Bag? I’ve shown you What’s in My Handbag and What’s in My Briefcase… so, last in the series remains a peek into my daily face of the day bag.

What’s in my makeup bag?

So we’ve established that I’m a terrible over-packer, as much as I lack sparcity and succinctness with my words. It would only be natural to assume I’m an over-packer when it comes to what I bring in my makeup bag for touch ups when I’m on the go.

What's in my makeup bag?, What's in my bag?
What's in my makeup bag?, What's in my bag?

From top row, left to right

Yes, that’s a lot of stuff. But as I stated earlier, I used to go from work to school, and my days could last from 7:45AM through 10:30PM–that’s 15 hours! I needed to have enough to touch up and always look fresh, alert and polished throughout the entire long day. Once I finished Uni, I still would spend 9-10 hours at the work place and not go home, so yes, I would travel with my entire house in my handbag.

Now that I’m “funemployed”, most days I carry my tinted lip balm, an eye enhancer (either my lash curler or another mascara), my SPF30 and eye drops and that’s it. Honestly, lately, I don’t give much of a crap how I look, as long as I look like I’m awake and alert and don’t look as if I just came back from a week-long bender.

This big teddy Bear[Dog] was watching me while I shot the entire series, silently judging me for being such a pack rat.

Regularly Architecture of an Outfit / OOTD posts will resume shortly… Remember, we’re still living out of suitcases and laundry baskets until we’re done moving and settled completely in Hawaii after the Holidaze. So pardon the messy room photos… we’re staying with family for the time-being. (We leave Michigan Saturday.)

The Universally Perfect Red Lipstick: Ruby Woo, MAC

As you know, I am obsessed with red lipstick. (I currently have about 14 tubes, glosses and pots of the stuff in my makeup drawer.) I AM ALWAYS on the look out for the perfect red lipstick! It’s always a hard thing to find the universal red lipstick: a red lip color for Asian skin, red lip color for olive skin tones, that also works well for pale skin and African-American complexions.

Considering that I have one of the hardest skin tones to shop for (medium brown with very golden yellow undertone–not exactly olive, but not exactly traditional “Asian” skin color either), most of the beauty column advice about brick reds for olive tones and yellows and blue reds for pink or beige complected beauties does not apply to me. I’m not olive or too tan, but I’m not light-skinned yellow, either, and I’m SO NOT beige. All the lipsticks I wear are either too bricky/orangey or too dark with a slight bluish undertone to it, which makes me ashy and sallow. It’s like, DAMN! makeup people, can’t you think of the million or so Southeast Asian women who just wanna look hot and kissable? A girl can’t get no satisfaction. Damn Europeans.

After logging thousands of hours in Sephora, Ulta and Nordstrom, swatching about a million shades, getting bad beauty advice and trying it myself for years and years, last Friday I ran into Stacey a NARS Makeup Artist. Um, she’s magic. She found my perfect red in less than twenty minutes. WHAT!

universally flattering red lipstick, red lipstick for asian skin, perfect red lipstick for olive skin, red lipstick for asians

{Mac Ruby Woo, the universally perfect red lipstick for every skin tone.}

According to Real Beauty.com, the most universally flattering shade of red lipstick is Ruby Woo. These girls didn’t mess around. They tested and vetted hundreds of lip colors, and had women of all colours and races try it on, and indeed! the shade IS flattering on every woman who wears it. Peep the slide show, it is the perfect red for all skin tones.

Review:
It’s a matte red in a long wearing formula. There’s no hint of blue or orange in the undertones. It’s just a perfect true red shade. The hue is absolutely brilliant and bold, so if you’re not used to it, you may need to blot it like crazy to get more of a stain. Or, to tone it down a notch, you can darken it by using a moisturizing brown eye or lip liner pencil and kind of create a gradient so the brightest pop is just at the center of the mouth. This effect also makes your lips appear more pouty and fuller. The long wearing formula is drying, though. So remember to moisturize your lips a bit with lip balm and again after. Or top the lippie with a moisturizing gloss. My preference is Burt’s Bee’s tinted lip balm in Red Dahlia. My lips are already too full for gloss, I’d look like a drag queen if I went glossy.

I’m relieved I found my HG (Holy Grail) red. But if I had to choose a close second, YSL’s Rouge Pur in Opium Red, but that’s been discontinued. And, at $14.50, I’ll just go to MAC every time. I’m usually anti-MAC, because I can never come out of there without looking like RuPaul, but I think their brushes and this lipstick can change my mind a little.

What’s your Holy Grail lip shade? Need help finding a good red for your skin tone? I can help!

Sometimes, a girl just needs her hair to hide behind

In the last three weeks since I’ve gone from long, to short, to extreme bird’s nest-birth-control hair, I’ve come to miss the hair I grew out for four years (mostly for my wedding two years ago). At times, for purely superficial reasons, and at others, self-esteem reasons, a girl just needs her hair to hide behind.

Let’s say hello, shall we?

Hello, long lost hurr.

I know you’ll say “but, Mae, it’s cute–you’re full of crap”, well, you’re just wrong. It’s so not sexy. Trust me!.
