Architecture of an Outfit: #InstaStyle – May

Aloha ahiahi, lovecat!

May was a slightly glamourous month. It was all about wearing beautiful women’s sun hats, travel, wearing gorgeous skirts and dresses, turning 30 and learning what that entails in terms of change.

May was kind of a whirlwind of a month. Both good and bad. I guess when it comes down to it, I used to love traveling, but my heart very deeply resides in the Land we made our home last year: The Land of Eternal Summer. While traveling, both Husby and I broke down with tears in our eyes and sad thoughts of longing for Hawaii and Home–completely independent of each other. It’s a bit sappy, but it’s true. When you love home so much that your heart breaks when you leave it, you know that that place has left a deep and indelible mark upon your soul.

Having lived in so many places over the years, I’ve had several places I could call “home”: Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; San Diego, California; Napa Valley, Northern California; Detroit, Michigan; and now Honolulu, Hawaii. But none of these places have threaded magic fibers into the material of my heart and soul so deeply as Honolulu, and it’s hard to imagine another places that could do just that. This is heaven, and we live here. We are so lucky.

What makes your heart soar this month? Comment at me on Facebook or Twitter. I’ve turned comments off from here for the time-being.

True Love.

Alan Choen Friendship True Love Quote, True Love Quote

Alan Cohen said it best.

I’m lucky to have certain people in my life who are amazing rocks, supports, inspirations.

My best friend J is my soul mate and big life event partner in crime. Love you, boo.

My closest, oldest partners in partying, good times (and severe bad ones–AP*) and general nerdiness, Kina and A.Damn…we’d travel across the globe (and the space/time continuum) for each other.

Our Ohana bros and our Ohana Meg Maur Sully and Marn da Boss…they have been there for us, no matter where, when or what, or how little time they had. Love you.

And most of all, I’ve been so blessed by having beautiful, strong and devoted husband, this man to constantly bring me up, motivate me, help me learn and grow.

This is for him. Only Bob can really capture the strength, breadth and depth of what I feel right now.

Gratitude. Love and flow.

Throwback Thursday / Architecture of an Outfit: Basics are the Basis of Amazing Style

Throwback Thursday. Two years ago… I must’ve known something awesome. A white button down is number one staple in any wardrobe.

{ Throwback Thursday Architecture of an Outfit } White button down, skinny black trousers, gold studded disco belt – Basics build the wardrobe

Hawaii Street Style, White Button Down Style, Disco Studded Belt

White button downs are an important staple of any closet. So are basic skinny pants.

Aloha kakahiaka! ~ Good morning, sweet, cheeky darling! It’s super humid and cloudy here in Hawaii this week. Clouds, humidity, high velocity wind whipping through porous lava rock mountains, rattling against my window pains–all of this can only mean Hurricane Season. Lovely.

So we’re throwing it back to the Golden Hour of a different place in my life, in a different season. Detroit, in spring. And you know what? I wore a pretty sweet twist on the basic black and white uniform of the business office types.

Apparently I can’t hold onto a good white button down without totally ruining it… I no longer have this amazing fit white button down. Instead I have a yellowed, stained button down I can barely wear without shame. Be that as it may, the shirt is still amazing in the way it sits on my body. It slims down the muffin top, boosts the girls and looks sophisticated with the collar popped or not.

Hawaii Street Style, White Button Down Style, Disco Studded Belt

Kicking back… not trying to hard. Not trying too hard. Low effort. That’s my steez.

As is the theme of my style of dress: extreme style impact with low effort. Basic pieces like a pair of skinny trousers, a crisp button down shirt and towering black shoes, alone, seem boring, but actually become a gorgeous canvas for a sophisticated ensemble when paired with statement accessories.

A statement belt is all you need. And gold bracelets/watch/rings. Throw on some earrings and let the fit of the shirt do the rest of the talking. Forget wearing a necklace. Decolletage work well under a good shirt.

Hawaii Street Style, White Button Down Style, Disco Studded Belt

Killer heels and a statement belt like a gold disco studded belt really up the style quotient without much work.

Can you see me? Silver armswag and body chain. Edge without trying too hard.

ETSIS Hats here in Hawaii customizes sun hats with UPF 50 scarf panels that wrap around your cheeks and neck to provide exceptional sun protection to the delicate skin on your face and neck. While they have their own sun protection hats line, I preferred to wear this wool floppy with my outfit. I snap-in the SunEscape Protection Panels when I drive or run errands. It’s a gorgeous style without much work at all.

Unfortunately, customized hats (where you bring in your own hat, and they put in the panel application for you) is only available in Hawaii, but you can get your own Sun Protection Hat at their website: www.etsishats.com.

A Man and His Bear: A Father’s Day Tribute

Husby Hapa Cutie, thereafterish., Maui Travel

Husby, with his adorable smile (which he only flashes when he has coffee, kombucha or Scotch in his hands), back in January in Maui.

I rather love this man. While he’s not the perfect man, nor the perfect husband, he’s the closest thing to perfect for me I’ve ever found, and could never have imagined for myself back in my naïve, idealistic youth.

{ Stylish Story } A Father’s Day Tribute

thereafterish., OOTD, How to Wear Mixed Prints, Shaka, Halona

Husby and me (rocking the clashing prints! #howtomixprints, what!) at Halona Lookout in Oahu (10 min away from our house).

We argue, we make up. We work hard and grow together. We’ve survived and thrived through long distance love, two cross-country moves, several inter-oceanic travels, a harrowing wedding schedule and planning process, an inter-oceanic move, 7.5 years of push and pull and give and take and laughing and giggling and crying and yelling and snickering and cuddling and sexing and loving and walking and running and sunset chasing. It’s been quite a ride; I can’t help but wonder what the next step will bring.

He’s not a father…yet. At least not for a couple more years.

But! In a way, he sort of already is:

If how he treats this Bear[Dog] is even an inkling of how he’d care for and treat a child, I know our future family is going to be in good hands.

Happy Doggy Dad’s Day, Husby, from me and Max the Bear.

And to my own father… the literally cutest little father on the planet, my adorable 4’10″ Poppy: I wouldn’t be the anal, thorough, analytical, methodical person I am if it weren’t for his brilliant genes. He is, quite honestly, the most intelligent, generous human being I’ve ever met.

The cutest Poppy that ever Popped.

Happy Poppy’s Day, Poppy. I love you.

Readers,
What did you do for Dad’s Day? I hope it was magical and with the greatest love.

Architecture of an Outfit: LUPUS: Put your purple where your mouth is

Be strong. Band together. Put on Purple and talk about it. Lupus Awareness.

{ Architecture of an Outfit } National Put on Purple Day – Lupus Awareness + Fashion = Dialog

Aloha kahiaka kakou ~ Good morning, all!

Last month was Lupus Awareness Month. In the interest of keeping this website light-hearted, cheerful and positive, I don’t really write too much or in great detail about my life with lupus, or what lupus can look like. Yeah, so thereafterish.com is not all about doom and gloom, nor about making people feel sympathy or pity for my situation.

But let me tell you. Lupus can be a total raging bitch, and she hits you where it hurts the most, or stabs you in the back–if you get my drift.

Put on Purple Day, Lupus Awareness, Lupus Put on Purple

May 18th was Put on Purple Day to raise lupus awareness. Learn more about lupus: www.lupus.org.

Put on Purple Day called for lupus survivors, their families, friends and supporters to don the lupus color purple to get some conversations started, and teach people more about this life-changing disease.

In honor of the day, I wore my favorite purple piece in my wardrobe, my Emami Peculiar Piece dress. A convertible dress, it can be worn 12-16 different ways, even as a poncho, a pair of pants, a maxi dress, you name it! It’s also got a tight weave in the organic fabric, so it provides exceptionally stylish sun protection as well (something for the lupus, arthritis, fibro, melanoma survivors, and everyone in between to pay attention to!). Um, so basically, it’s perfection in a dress.

Here’s how I wore it:

Hawaii Street Style, Emami Peculiar Piece, Put On Purple, Lupus, thereafterish.

Put on Purple Day May 18th: Wearing my Emami Peculiar Piece, which can be worn 15 different ways.

OUTFIT ARCHITECTURE
Dress: Peculiar Piece convertible dress, Emami (emami.dk), Price: €99.90 / $125.14USD
Alternative: tea length convertible dress, also available in purple.

Learn more about lupus: Visit the Lupus Foundation website, lupus.org. Help us fight the fight by armoring yourself with knowledge.

Now that you know a little bit more about my disease…

How will you wear YOUR purple?

I wish you love, strength and awareness.

Life in Pictures: Insta[Spring] – April

With the demands of my new job and household errands and duties, I’m hardly on the blog lately, but I post regularly on Instagram. I think a lot of you can experience my life in Hawaii through my Insta Feed. (#InstagramHawaii is my main tag… LOL.)

Here’s what life was like in April.

{Life in Pictures} Instagram Hawaii – April

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

April Highlights:

  • Moved from the damp rainforest on the East Shore (Windward side) to gorgeous Hawaii Kai, where everything is within a 5-10 minute driving distance, yet far enough from Town (Honolulu, Waikiki and Ala Moana) to not feel the hustle and bustle associated with a crowded city.
  • Meet up with Sharon of Eli*Sharon and her adorable Husband Eli. Yeay for Hawaii Style Bloggers!
  • Sunrises in East O‘ahu. Epic.
  • Visit from Mamasita, my mother in law and touring around the Island. Pearl Harbor, LOST palaces, the Others’ Camp, stormy beaches, Easter at Turtle Bay Resort. Beach going.
  • Vegetarian and vegan food porn experiments.
  • Dramatic sunsets (of course).
  • Finding a stray dog, taking care of it, then taking it home to its owner… late night!
  • Birthday presents for myself.

Stay tuned for Insta[Spring] – May edition! And Insta[Spring] – Outfits!
