Picture of the Day: California, You’ve Been Missed

Living in Hawaii, it’s easy to forget how much I loved growing up in Southern California. While this trip has been a roller coaster of good, bad, sentimental and weird emotions, I cannot deny how amazing and lucky I’ve been to be raised in such a diverse, beautiful place.

Architecture of an Outfit: Orange Crush Amongst LOST Temples

I’m trying my best to walk around like a Grecian goddess around the LOST Asian Temple at The Valley of the Temples here in Oahu… but the best I can come off is matching the orange and rust pillars of the temple’s outlying buildings. It’s my Hawaii Street Style… touring temples, epic views from mountainside overlooks, and hipster diners in Honolulu’s Chinatown.

Being the nerds that we are, when Husby’s mum came to visit us here in Oahu, we jumped at the opportunity to tour the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park right in our old ‘hood, north Kane‘ohe. LOST fans and buffs might recognize the place as the palace where Jin proposed to Sun in “House of the Rising Sun” (S1.06).

Of course I turned the trip into an outfit shoot. Why not? Epic scenery makes a simple ensemble that much better. You don’t have to do much at all.

And we just ran around the rest of the place, freezing in the whipping winds atop a mountain, overlooking the Windward Side of Oahu and eating super fattening (read: ONOLICIOUS ~ DELECTABLE) diner food at a hipster magnet eatery in Honolulu’s Chinatown. What you, my friends, would call a bad-ass day. Wouldn’t you say so?

Architecture of an Outfit: Stripes Never Go Out of Season

Regardless of the season, and, despite what fashion experts say, stripes are always in style. Spring summer trend reports always predict stripes “coming back”, but if they’re always in season, there’s no reason for a comeback. Stripes don’t make a comeback; they command the room, never stand in the back, and never, ever leave front and center.

If you couldn’t tell, I’m a fan of stripes.

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Stripes are always in style

This striped dress by Butter by Nadia is probably my fave. And the crumb-catcher frilly thing on the neckline? No one else has it.

And the leopard wedges… of course.

I reviewed the dress last year in this article: “Butter By Nadia, The Lulu Dress.” And you’ve seen this dress with neon royal blue tights last Christmas. See? It’s a multi-seasonal wardrobe weapon.

Architecture of an Outfit: Spring-Summer 2012 Brights Trend: Coral Crush

I hate being called “trendy”, but the Spring/Summer 2012 brights trend of coral and neons is one I couldn’t resist. This gauzy split back shirt is one of the best impulse buys I’ve snapped up in a long time. And of course, my leopard wedge heels make their regularly scheduled appearance.

{ Architecture of an Outfit } Spring Brights, Stripes, Leopard Wedge Heels, Mom Pants and Silver Armswag

Spring Summer 2012 is all about neons and ultra vibrant hues, more so than it was last year. If wearing brights head to toe is too much for you, like it can be for me, you can always just wear one prominent color and keep the rest muted or neutral. A blouse or tee like this one can be a bit edgy, despite the floaty, ethereal fly away back, for the exact reason of all the skin. For the office, layer a striped or solid tank underneath to keep it appropriate. Then ground the breeziness with a half-tuck into pleated trousers.

I kept it playful by cuffing my mom-pants and contrasting the stripes and punch of the neon coral with my leopard wedges. Finally, I finished it with silver mismatched earrings and mixed metal armswag.

Max the Bear wanted to do an Outfit of the Day shot as well, to show off his summer cut.

I’ve been seeing Moloka‘i, Lana‘i these early mornings, beyond the gold haze of dawn shining through my window… and sometimes wreathed by clouds, almost lilac in the distance, I can faintly see Mau‘i’s Haleakala Volcano above the glimmering Pacific and neighbor islands. It’s a magical time in my life. The thing is… it’s just regular life. And I’ve just learned to see it in a better, happier way.

I’m normally an angry, irritable person. I used to proudly refer to myself as GrumpyPants or AngryPants. But I’m learning to and need to let that go. Life is too short to let anger control me. In the grand scheme of life, everything that makes me angry are just anxieties that never, ever come to fruition. People sometimes suck. Life throws bad things at you. Storms may rage, but you can always adjust the sails to find calmer seas. The control rests in your hands. It all starts with me.

I sincerely hope your days are amazing and your weeks are short, sweet and golden.

{808 Style} Erica Miguel: Stylist, Model, Retail Genius & Mom Extraordinaire

In honor of Mother’s Day, I thought I’d interview a local HNL hottie with rock star street style, who also happens to be a total rock star mommy.

808 Style: Local Street Stylin’ Mom Erica Miguel

I met Erica the first time I set foot in my new favorite local Honolulu Boutique, Fighting Eel, I was struck by her vivacious aura and her feisty punk rock fashion sense. A retail associate at Fighting Eel, Erica is also a stylist, a freelance model and a stellar mom with a very grounded set of values and a killer sense of humor. With almost 1,000 followers on Instagram and almost a hundred likes on every single photo she posts, it’s easy to see that people resonate with her outgoing personality and her fashion sense–I’m one of her many fans myself!

How she has time to fit all the fabulousness of the different aspects of her life is beyond me, but she does it, and she does it with such stylish effortlessness. And her kid is stinkin’ cute, too. Powerhouse.

Name & Age: Maria Erica Miguel, 26
Child: Ira-Rose, 4
Occupation: Retail Associate & Stylist, Fighting Eel, freelance model

Q&A

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve discovered about yourself since becoming a mother?

The most surprising thing I’ve discovered about myself since becoming a mother is my patience. I didn’t have an ounce of it before and now I have some. Haha!

Erica Miguel, Fighting Eel, Honolulu Street Style, 808 Style

What inspires your style?

Uniqueness inspires my style; rock n’ roll, vintage, individuality.

Who are your style icons?

My style icons are mostly men, David Bowie, Jared Leto, Keith Richards… But I do love Erin Wasson, of course Kate Moss.

Three words that define your fashion sense:

Rock and Roll.

Does living in Hawaii affect how you dress?

Not really. I still wear my combat boots and pleather leggings with my band tees! Even if it’s hot because I’m always cold! I’m a rebel–I dress how I like!

Erica Miguel, Fighting Eel, Honolulu Street Style, 808 Style

How has your style changed since you’ve had kids?

My style hasn’t changed much, I never wore maternity clothes and never dressed like a “mom”.

Name 3 go-to pieces in your closet:

Band tee, leggings, leather bomber.

Erica Miguel, Fighting Eel, Honolulu Street Style, 808 Style

What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten from your mother?

“Sunscreen!”

How very Filipino!

Erica Miguel, Fighting Eel, Honolulu Street Style, 808 Style

If you could gift yourself a Mother’s Day present, what would it be?

My gift to me would be more time with my daughter.

What’s the most rewarding thing about being a mom?

Being a mom is the most rewarding thing about being a mom. Period.

Erica Miguel, Fighting Eel, Honolulu Street Style, 808 Style

Thanks, Erica!

If you want to catch more of this stylin’ Honolulu mama, you can catch her posting regularly on Instagram on iPhone and Droid via @numb_skull, on her blog, irarose.tumblr.com, or in the crowd at local hardcore shows, strutting her stuff and oozing awesomeness from every pore.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there!

In case you don’t follow me on Instagram (Username: @maeluu), Twitter (Username: @maeluu) or Facebook (link below)… You might not know…

20120511-094704.jpg

I turned Thirty this week.

I can’t wait to tackle the future! Trust me, life gets so much better as it progresses. Sure, there are pitfalls, failures, moments of immense sorrow and grief… But there is hope, happiness and victory. If life doesn’t get better and better with age, you are living your life wrong.

Dirty Thirties. It’ll be my best decade yet!!!

Happy weekend, Lovecats!

Happiness: Rolling in the Deep

Happiness can be infectious. Happiness goes deep within, to banish the stale, negative, in-grained emotions, thoughts and energy, to achieve a peaceful contentment or Nirvana.

A forced smile. A deep forced laugh. Even forced behavior. The choice to engage that positive action is a trigger that conditions your brain to release tension, intensity and negative or stale energy. Behavior conditions attitude. Through the decision to force yourself to behave happy, you open and prepare your heart and mind to happiness.

Try it. Laughter therapy is real. Smile therapy is real. I tried it this morning.

I took huge, deep, gulping breaths and then laughed deeply, ridiculously. Once, twice. It sounded stupid. I felt idiotic. Then I began to laugh at myself for real. And all the stress that I’d been feeling for the last 24 hours fell away. I smiled… not a sticker smile that hurts your cheeks. But a real smile… I wasn’t necessarily happy at that moment. But I made a conscious choice to start my day on the right foot.

And you know what?

It’s been a great day so far.

Happiness goes deep. You just have to CHOOSE IT.
