Architecture of an Outfit: High-lows and Wind on the Marina

Hawaii Kai and Kona Brewing Company again. My obsession with high-low hems continues, as does my love for Bamboo Sky. And, of course, we don’t go anywhere in Hawaii without the Wheaten Terrier Bear. Just another day in Paradise…

Aloha ahiahi kakou! ~ Good eve, y’alls!

We haven’t even moved there yet, but we seem to be spending a whole lot of time in Hawaii Kai. Given the amount of time and monies spent at Kona Brewing Company and the time we spend walking around Koko Marina, our choice to leave Hakipuā€˜u Valley for something more urban and closer to town conveniences was the right one. (In spite of my assumptions that I was a Country Girl at heart, deceptively dressing in Townie Girl clothes.)

Let’s face some ugly facts, okay?

{ We’re indisputably utter yuppies. }

Well there! I said it. It actually feels cathartic to have admitted it so vehemently.

As much as we like to deny this terribly stigmatized label could be attributed to ourselves, we cannot deny that our enjoyments and preferences pretty much align with the standard definition. We like living a comfortable lifestyle, eating out, being close to urban cultural centers, shopping at higher end health food stores (which some people like to denounce as being “uppity and elitist”, i.e., Whole Foods), having a nice house, a decent car, nice clothes. I think there’s nothing wrong with that at all. It’s the negative implications of yuppism that make us ashamed to call ourselves that word. We are not out of touch with the challenges of those who live in the lower-economic strata, neither are we super self-absorbed (well, at least Husby isn’t, not sure I could one hundred percent honestly say that–after all, I AM a blogger) or elitist in any way about our up-bringings or education (both of us grew up pretty humbly and both of us had to work as teens in order to pay for school, our cars and luxuries).

BLAH BLAH BLAH. I could go on with this argument. No one probably reads my entire articles, anyway. I talk too much to be a proper fashion blogger.

In Summary:
Yes. We’re yuppies. We like being close to Whole Foods, shopping malls, civilization and clean places to walk our dog. We couldn’t hack it in the country. We are ashamed to call ourselves yuppies, so don’t call us that, ever. The End.

So, about the clothes.

Loving high-low or asymmetrical hem cuts lately. It probably stems from my love of my collared asymmetrical chiffon tunic and how perfectly it layers over skirts, leggings, and under sweaters. High-low silhouettes are very in right now… before the trend subsides, I want to wear the heck out of it. Because of the longer layers, I can get away with wearing Leggings as Pants without inadvertently debuting any unsightly VPL or moose knuckle (aka camel toe). It also provides a refreshing alternative to straight hems, which, though traditional, aren’t as dynamic and lack the flowy movement of high-low hems.

I got this gauzy tunic at Bamboo Sky (Down the Middle Split Back Tunic). It can be worn as a dress with the proper under pinnings. DO NOT, under any circumstance, wear without proper layers underneath. People will try to hire you for an hourly fee, if you get what I mean, you hussy.

Because of the slightly diaphanous, billowy shape, I re-defined my waist with a neon striped belt. Then I covered up with a striped structured blazer. I finished off with my beloved Emami bow leggings and strappy cage heels.
