We left Detroit today, Husby, Max and I. While you read this, we’re heading west somewhere, stopping for the night in the Prairie Plains of Iowa. Yet another post dedicated to my wonderful home of six and a half years.
Detroit History: The Paris of the West
My mum-in-law and I both love this city. Her hometown, and my adopted hometown, Detroit has innumerable charms, activities, amazing eateries and sights to see. But by far, the best thing about the city are the myriad National Heritage Historical Landmarks. One of our favorite things to do is to take a tour of one Historical site each year–sometimes two!
This year, we toured the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Mansion back in May (for my birthday), and just a couple of weeks ago, we took a tour of Midtown Detroit, which encompassed the Detroit Public Library and it’s murals and grand halls, Wayne State University (my alma mater), Detroit History Museum, the Col. Frank Hecker House (Detroit’s very own “castle”), the Charles Lang Freer House, the charming Inn on Ferry Street, and the exclusive art space, The Scarab Club.
Here are some of my favorite shots from the day, all shot with my iPhone 4, using Hipstamatic.

While some people debase the city as “ruined,” “crime-ridden”, “depressed” or “third world,” I scoff at these accusatory write-offs. From this town flows a beautiful history, and a powerful, independent and artistic spirit that only comes from those who know what it is to be downtrodden, rising with the power and glory of a phoenix. The art, heritage, music, food and all around culture of this city not only sings of the golden age it once enjoyed for decades, and of the Atlantean downfall, but also of the golden, technical age dawning for us now.
Detroit’s coming back. The movement has already begun. It is mightier and more glorious than you would ever know. I’m proud to be a part of it, while living here, and while I continue to visit, because it’s my home now. One of them.
