What to wear to a beautiful autumn wedding when Color Season is in full swing? Why not match the natural “decor” of the occasion and go in all red? Echo the beautiful flame, sunset, ochre and goldenrod hues by going in a scarlet dress and be the belle of the ball, only after the bride, of course.

As you may remember, about a month ago N and I went up north to Traverse City and Northport, Michigan to join in the festivities of the joyous wedding at the mill of our two dear friends, Jamie and Paris (or as we like to say “Jaris and Pamie”). Color Season was barely beginning, and wind, chill and the smell of apples and wood crackling in warm hearths was starting to tickle the air with their rich scents. Our friends are very outdoorsy, simple and reserved fashion types (think J. Crew autumn collection with a hint of New Balance, The North Face and Hunters Boots and the occasional deliciously polished Coach bag), but I didn’t want to blend in for the sake of not making a spectacle of myself for over-dressing.

The gorgeously appointed Willowbrook Mill was the perfect setting for our friends. The natural setting had just enough glamour, but surrounded by sweetly flowing water with the creek under the entryway bridge, the gorgeous natural wood floors and softly filtering golden light from antique chandeliers…it was perfectly organic and chic for the happy couple. And the right setting to put on a bit of a diva ensemble without making a scene.

If you’re wondering what to wear to a fall wedding, just mirror the season and dress up as The Lady in Red.

Keep it simple with unfussy accessories and unfussy hair. Keep it from being too scandalous or distracting (gotta keep attention on the Bride, right?) by breaking up the line with a peplum waist. If it’s cold, you can glam it up by wearing lace tights and shiny patent shoes rather than just traditional sheer or boring opaque black tights. If you need a bit of personality, throw on an animal print wrap–the rest of you is simple enough that you can spare the room to go a bit crazy without going insane. A matte thick material, as opposed to a shiny material like satin, is more forgiving and flattering and will keep your dress from oozing into the wrinkled bad prom dress territory.
