This tweed kimono jacket was designed by an independent designer from Iceland. The moment I saw it in navy hanging on a dress form at The Collective of Young Designers in Reykjavik, I knew it was unique from all the kimono styles we’ve seen in recent years.

We went out to dinner in Ann Arbor the other night, to have a goodbye dinner with one of N’s best friends, his wife and their parents. Since we’re moving to Oahu, Hawaii in just a month, we didn’t know when we’d see them again. So they came out from Atlanta to visit us, take us out and have a bunch of delicious vegan and vegetarian cuisine at Seva Restaurant in Ann Arbor. What followed was consumption of deceptively delicious vegetarian fare (vegan for N), a bit of drinking and Kombucha, a little dessert, and lots of laughter.

Iceland Fashion
Most kimono style coats and jackets we see here end up looking more like babydoll/empire waist tops and dresses with a sash attached to the sides that ties in the back. This is an unmistakable Western adaptation of the kimono which does not interpret the style accurately. Lined with gorgeous emerald satin, the Iceland jacket’s sleeves actually feature the open vents that traditional yukata in Japan do. The Sash, while not an obi, is appropriately thick and ties around the front in a bow, instead of at the back. However, since it’s attached to the back, I can tie the thing in a big bow at the back as well, if I want to. The tweed and the lining make the coat a nice transitional coat, but not so heavy that it can’t be worn in Hawaii (which it will have to be when it gets cooler there–which it can once you acclimatize).

I wore it with my emerald chiffon tiered ruffle tunic, which I belted, a leopard scarf and leggings. To add further height, I strapped my 5 inch Jeffrey Campbell knock off (knock off of knock offs, right?) Miss Me heels on my socked. I looked long and lean and mean. Simple, but powerful accessories like my JewelMint Birdcage Bangle and gold infinity earrings finished off the look.

After dinner, N and I traipsed about Nain Street, photographing old theatre signs in a type of bittersweet goodbye to A Squared, a town we have grown to love over the course of our stay here in Detroit.

We’re going to miss this place.
