Architecture of an Outfit: Standing Out in Lace and Bodycon Stripes

>>>A few weeks ago while hanging out at a rehearsal dinner at the Leelanau Old Art Building in northern Michigan, I kind of made a spectacle of myself by showing up way overdressed. A sheet lace blouse belted with a vintage leather belt with a gold coral buckle, worn with a striped bodycon skirt and knee socks–when everyone else is wearing The North Face, Flannel, and Jeans, or else are “dressed up” in J. Crew digs–is the surest way to stand apart from the crowd. Which I’m okay with, NOW. But it took me a couple of years to be okay with sticking out like a sore thumb. And on days when I feel less than optimal, I feel the old “I just want to fade into the backdrop” attitude seeping through the cracks in my confidence.

I need to learn how to let that go.
