Travel Diary: Old Farmstead & Family Reunion, Cape Breton Island Day 3

(This post has been long in coming. Sorry!–M) Our third day in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, we toured a haunted-looking old farm property that’s been in my husband’s family for over 4 generations, and then had a small family reunion in Port Hawkesbury for my mama’s birthday. The “farmstead” had the coolest old red barn, a sad and lonely old tractor, a creepy old farmhouse that looked like it had been preserved in the middle of a normal day sometime in the 40s (except for the TV in the dining room. Everything was pretty, well, old.

Touring the homestead near Judique, it made me feel as if I knew so little of my own family’s history, and so lucky to be part of another family who takes its own heritage and knowing its roots very seriously. The day we visited, 3 generations of “Macs” were running amok on the around the farm. It was a really solid morning. Makes me want to know more about my family’s beginnings in Canada, and even back before the 3rd generation back came to North America from the “Homeland”. (Note, to those of you who ask me “where I’m from”, I’m “from” California and Canada. My ancestors are from the Philippines.)

An old birchwood clothesline. Before washer/dryers. OLD SCHOOL. Looks also like an eerie cross.

Will post one more photo of the birthday girl “blowing out her candles” (because I missed the shot the first time), but I didn’t upload that…oops.

  1. Imagine my shock when I clicked on this….my pa’s tractor in google images sort of peaked my curiosity a bit! Runs like a dream! I spent alot of time there….really nice pictures you captured. Good memories and a lot of hard work…then and still now. I hope you felt the love and peace there. There’s nothing better than a cup of boiling tea on the woodstove after hauling hay all day. (in Ottawa but from down the road) :-) I’m the grad pic still in the livingroom …lol

Let's get talkin'.
