{ Architecture of an Outfit/OOTD/Digital Stylin’ } What I wore… To the Opera Theatre

Saturday, we finally bestowed upon my mother-in-law her Christmas gift, which was the present of dinner and a show of her choice. In this case her choice was to see a review concert of American composer extraordinaire and jazz/classical music legend, George Gershwin–a favorite of mine as well.

What do you wear to a place called The Michigan Opera Theatre, where they host Broadway shows such as Mary Poppins and Wicked? Whatever you’d find yourself vamping out to an evening wedding. Which, in my case, means lots of red, lots of vampy, cat-eye gel liner (in blue, for a softer, yet still fierce look), dark red matte lips and a curve-accentuating red peplum shift dress which hides muffin top from a huge Italian dinner(actual dress I wore from ChicShop.ca HERE) paired with lace tights and patent leather oxford pumps. Since Detroit is still down to freezing temps this early “spring”, I cover up with a faux fur jacket (similar, but not exactly–see the one I wore HERE by Deep in Vogue). Top the outfit out with a few cute details mixed in with diva bling, and you’ve got a fun ensemble to dazzle when you’re amidst the glory of the city’s best jazz piano legend playing the country’s most beloved classical/jazz fusion composer.

I would’ve had photos to post of the outfit myself, but I didn’t bring my camera, and Husby and I were so sick (stomach bug) that, by the time we got home, we were in absolutely no mood (or shape!) to take photos. The show was absolutely superb, though! (Aside from getting dirty stares from 3 *very* old Caucasian couples–my BFF Mandy thinks I’m majorly paranoid, and sometimes I am, but this time I literally caught 2 old men giving me the most scathing looks, while an old woman stared at me through glaring eyes for about 30 seconds, none of which would look away when I caught their confrontational gazes with a wide-eyed counter gaze. What is it with old people nowadays, with their rude gawking? It’s really offensive.)

{What would YOU wear to the Opera Theatre? How would you style it?}

  1. If I know how to do winged eye-liner, I’d be doing it in all sorts of colours, every day!

Sadly, one line is always fatter than the other and when I try to even it out, results – tragic!

Ahhh.. too bad, I really wanna see your outfit to the opera. I wore a floor length gown last time I went… I felt silly, like a faux-red carpet but hey, its the opera!

    • I say, get it. Seriously, there are so many on clearance right now it’s not even funny. Get it and then come to Detroit, and we’ll party in our faux fur, because we’re eco fab!

  3. now that is a cool gift, very cool. :-) it sounds like you were rockin the red and faux-fur. and as for the old folks, i always try to think positive hopeful thoughts about others. but if they were being nasty, than f$%k them.

    love and thoughts to Japan.

  4. I did not know you have a YouTube channel! Thank you for the link! Nice one! Checked out your Foundation video and am looking forward to more tutorials.

Is the Opera Theatre quite fancy? Or is it the norm for people to dress up when they watch Broadway shows? Loved the outfit you picked out!
Dyou know when I watched my first musical (Wicked) in London, I was so worried because all I had was a very simple day dress, but when I got there, I saw teenagers wearing jeans and sneaker -.-
However, I did notice the older generation were much more well-dressed. I wished people still dressed up to go to the theatres.

Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience with those 3 couples. Right idiots!

    Hope you’ve fully recovered, btw.

  5. I wish you were able to snap a few pictures of you wearing this outfit because the combination is DIVINE! And I think you may be a little oversensitive about the race thing? I think people just love looking at super chic well dressed people (like you!) I mean…I do that…a lot. I also have poor eyesight so my admiring looks can probably be misinterpreted because I am squinting. Sorry to digress but your night sounds incredible! :)

  6. I love colored liners. I sometimes wear dark purple/almost black. Subtle but makes a huge difference especially if it accents your eye color.

People probably do stare at you, but you tend to automatically assume it’s because you’re Asian, and it’s probably not. I mean you do have a unique look but you also have good hair, good makeup and you dress very “original” and stylish. I have a feeling people at the opera were considerably more intrigued by your stand-out outfit than your skin, so that’s what I meant by it. If everyone cared about you being Asian as much as you think they do, it would be pretty disturbing. Not everyone that looks at you is racist and I’m sure they think you and Nate look nice together, because you do. They’re not wishing he was with a white girl. :)

    • I can totally understand and agree with this, because even I will acknowledge that yes, I am extremely paranoid about this. Normally I don’t give a shit, and don’t even notice people looking unless it’s completely blatant. But lately it’s mostly just been OLD people, and when we were at the theater on Saturday it was NOT intrigued or interested glances, it was full on stink-eye. Three cases of old people staring through squint eyed, eyebrows knitted with disdain, plain as day stink eye. I know the difference between stink eye and curiosity. And people who are usually curious normally look away when caught staring. Instead they kept glaring at me like I was doing something wrong. Maybe it’s not a mixed race couple thing, but they thought there was something definitely wrong with me or they didn’t like something about me. It was a very angry look from 3 people in one night. One old man even glanced down at Nate and I holding hands, then back up to my face and curled his nose.

That is NOT paranoia. That’s seeing a mother fucker being a fucker in plain view. And I still don’t get it.

Anything else, hey, that’s mighty cool! But it wasn’t good stares. I certainly wish it was! And thank you for saying that, that’s another reason I love you so hard.

Hit me up, yo.
